As any good Android-obsessed geek should know by now, Google’s made a tradition out of alphabetically naming their firmware builds after sweets. Android 1.5 was “Cupcake”, v1.6 was “Donut”, v2.0 is “Eclair”, while the next release will be lovingly dubbed “Froyo”. “But what comes after that?!” you say from the edge of your seat.

Google has a problem. Despite having their hands in just about everything online, they’ve never been able to tackle what is a key part of the fabric of the web: social. Asus has the first Nvidia Optimus laptops~!

[bookmarked CrunchGear]

Kudos, I guess, to Asus, being the first manufacturer to incorporate Nvidia’s Optimus technology into actual products. The Taiwan-based company has announced five laptops (note: I refuse to use the term “notebook” when referring to laptops; I think the name “netbook” is dumb, too, so at least I’m consistent) that range in size from 13.3 [...]

Miniaturization is a key selling point with many products, but the challenges of going smaller aren’t just an issue of mocking up a physically smaller housing.  Individual components that make up a product must also be sourced in smaller form factors.  As an added challenge, as space gets tighter within the casing, the potential for heat build-up within a device increases; which means that components must not only be smaller, they must also be more heat-resistant.  A case in point is the Membrane Potentiometer Sensor.  Used in a multitude of high tech industrial applications (including robotics, aerospace and automotive) that face significant miniaturization pressure, only a few years ago the most advanced manufacturing was unable to produce a sensor that could withstand temperatures of greater than 60 degrees Celsius.  Spectra Symbol has broken this barrier, using their proprietary technology to produce a Linear potentiometer that measures an ultra-thin, 0.5mm, yet is able to withstand high operational temperatures and 100% humidity.
