LTO (Linear Tape Open) is a data storage system which is comprised of magnetic tape. Linear Tape Open has been utilized for over 50 years, but it was only during the past couple of decades, that LTO started to be widely used. 

For optimal performance, the Accelis is the perfect form of Linear Tape Open. This type provides fast access to data by employing a two reel cartridge. The tape used measures just 8mm wide which increases speed and lowers the time it takes for data to be accessed. IBM were the initial creators of this.

The only real problem in relation to Linear Tape Open is the leader pin that it uses. This holds the cartridge in the right place. When a cartridge is not in a drive, the leader pin is kept secure with the help of a small spring. When the cartridge is being used, the leader pin allows the reader to get a great and reliable grasp on the tape, resulting in you being able to access your data.

Problems with this arise when the pin falls from where it should be, this is normally an issue if the cartridge gets dropped or damaged. This tends to results in the cartridge failing to be able to load. Another reason for failing to load is the plastic casing which the Linear Tape Open is contained within becoming worn down, leading to it no longer being able to securely hold the pin.

There have been some different alterations, and there have been some Linear Tape Open that avoid using leader pins in an attempt to solve this problem. Punching a hole through the casing is one solution, which enables the drive to grasp the end of the tape without the use of the pin.

Don’t let such a small problem cause you not to try LTO. It could be for you, like it is for other people, an ideal form of data storage.
