Sammy Jackson does some good work, sporting a high gasp of a voice and letting his character surface to reality smoothly, but the movie becomes too much of a buy dvd movies morality play as it unwinds. Samuel L. Jackson easily could have gone over the top with his role as an elderly and homeless former professional boxer. He’s gone pretty far with less tempting material.
Instead, he gives a subdued, often poignant performance as Champ Without Jackson — and a little help from Alan Alda and Peter Coyote — this would be another in the long line of instantly forgettable Josh Hartnett vehicles. Champ is a solid effort with a lot going for it, but it suggests that Lurie still isn’t willing to relax and let viewers interpret his films.

A literate story with more food for thought than competent follow-though The screenplay writers have created a confused mess that travels down far too many different thematic paths. not a big popcorn buy dvd movies, but it’s one not to be missed Because it focuses on characters and relationships rather than merely the more sensational aspects of the story, Resurrecting the Champ delivers a knock-out.
