If you bought a netbook recently, it probably came the decidedly hampered Windows 7 starter. You might have eyed the other version of Windows, but maybe you didn’t want to shell out the $79 for the Home 7 Premium. Good news for you, Microsoft is running a special promotion that will allow you to upgrade for the low low price of $49.99.
The promotion starts on April 4th, and ends on July 3rd, so you’ve got plenty of time between now and then to upgrade. There’s other news too, Microsoft also dropped the price of upgrading from Windows 7 Home Premium to Window 7 Professional. Formerly, it cost $89.99, but Microsoft dropped the price to $79.99. Not a huge discount, but at least they are giving you something, eh? Just a suggestion, if you’re curious why you should upgrade, check out the Windows 7 wiki.
The good news? Microsoft has announcedWindows 7’s first service pack, which fixes minor bugs. The bad news? The company didn’t mention the beta or release date. How nice.
Here’s another option from the ultra small computer crowd; the fit-PC2i is the latest miniature PC on the market, and it’s an interesting bit of technology.
The new fit-PC2i is an Intel Atom based system, capable of running up to a 2 gigahertz CPU, up to 2GB of RAM, with enough room for a 2.5 inch hard drive. While I personally would run something like Ubuntu, the fit-PC2i is capable of running Windows 7.
Now for the bad news. The fit-PC2i won’t be available until January, and we don’t know how much it costs yet. Considering that the case is made from an aluminum diecast body, it’s probably not going to be cheap.
Good news for both Netbook lovers and manufacturers! There won’t be any cut down version of Windows 7 installed on the netbooks, and finally we get rid of the restricted version of Windows 7 9it has a lot of features missing). The new operating system will be officially released on 22nd October.

When Netbooks first appeared on the market, almost one year ago, they came with open source Linux OS. Microsoft took position on this, and lowered the fee for Windows XP license, to that they could dominate the Netbook operating system market.
Windows Vista eats too many resources, while in the same time, Windows 7 runs very well on Notebooks, but everybody is waiting to see how OEMs deal with this announcement.
