Is there room on the Ultrabook wagon for two new models from Samsung? There’s a 13-incher and a 14-incher, which both come under its Series 5 branding, but at first glance only the smaller model might deserve its seat: it has the requisite Sandy Bridge processor and an acceptable thickness (14.9mm), but it adds 500GB of HDD storage on top of a 16GB SSD, which brings its weight right up to the 1.4kg limit. Meanwhile, the 14-inch variant only just scrapes through the 21mm thickness criterion, but its 1.8kg weight seems well overboard. We can’t wait to see what happens when Intel inspects its ticket.

Our Friday lists are all about gadgety fun and leisure, but sometimes technology can be frustrating—and there is definitely a right way and a wrong way to handle it. This is definitely the wrong way.

So the rumors about Nintendo releasing a new DSi with a bigger screen (we reported Monday and Tuesday) were true. Big N officially announced a new DSi in Tokyo today, the so-called DSi LL [JP]. It has a 4.2-inch screen, will be released on November 21 in Japan and is priced at $220. Buyers will initially be able to choose between brown, red and white versions.

You’ll get two pens with the handheld. One is thicker and 129.33mm long, the thinner model is 96mm long. There’ll also be three DSiWare games pre-installed (two brain-training games and a dictionary).

The DSi that’s currently on the market has a 3.25-inch screen (the DS Lite only had a 3-inch screen). Nintendo says the DSi LL is especially designed for a better Internet surfing experience. It’s 21.2mm thin, but it’s thicker than the current DSi (18.9mm) and way heavier (314g vs. 214g).

Nintendo Japan’s web site is in Japanese (obviously), but this page visualizes the difference in screen size between the “old” DSi and the LL (just hover your mouse across the screen).

Nintendo has yet to announce international sales plans.

Update:

Kotaku reports Europe gets the new DSi model in the first quarter of 2010. It’s going to be called DSi XL there. No word on a US release yet.

Update 2 (more pictures):

Okay, everyone. Time for a pop quiz! Lets say your iPhone is totally ruining your day. Maybe the battery is flaking out; maybe you dumped a gallon of soda on it just to see what would happen. Regardless, you pop into the Apple Store to try and get things worked out. Now, what would you do next?

Do you:
A) Calmly ask for assistance, spend some time at the Genius Bar, and most likely walk away with your questions answered?
B) Skip over those smug Genius Bar dudes, and go straight to a manager?
C) Threaten to shoot your iPhone, and show the 9mm you have concealed?

Japan-based Shinoda Display has begun field-testing a very large, thin and bendable display [JP, PDF]at Tokyo Station. The 145-inch display is based on the company’s proprietary Plasma Tube Array (PTA) technology. It’s just 0.9mm thick and consists of six film panels that are bendable, which means they fit on curved surfaces.

Technically, those PTA displays are similar to plasma panels, but are made by using film electrodes and an array of glass tubes. The 145-inch monster display consumes up to 1,000W of electricity, weighs 180kg and shows content such as ads, clips and web sites. Too bad the speakers to the left and right look a little awkward.

Shinoda uses almost the same 145-inch display it unveiled to the general public back in May. But the field test, which lasts through September 4, marks the first time the company explores the device’s usability and acceptance. And you can actually buy the display: It’s yours for $430,000.

The Samsung PL series is all about making digital photography fun, easy and fairly cheap, and what the Korean tech overlord has done today is to add on a little functionality to that list. PL70 The PL70 comes with a 12.2-megapixel sensor, capturing stills and 720p HD video through a wide-angle 28mm lens with 5x optical zoom and displaying them for your pleasure on the 3-inch, 230K colour, LCD screen on the back. It measures 95.8mm × 59.5mm × 23.9mm, comes in black, silver, red or pink and gives you 11 scene modes to play with as well as an intelligent auto mode that will make the choice for you. Naturally, there's image stabilisation, whether you're in optical or digital zoom modes, and it comes with all the usual beauty shot, smile shot, face detection, blink detection and self portrait modes that most good compacts have these days to help you get the results you're after. A very reasonable £199 from August. PL55 Essentially the same beast as its bigger brother here but no HD video shooting mode. You can still capture moving footage but only in 640 x 480 MPEGS rather than the H.264 encoding on the PL70. That brings the price down to £149 but you also switch to a standard, non-wide, 35mm lens and a smaller 2.7-inch LCD and I'm not sure that's worth the saving. However, if you are on a budget, you can pick up this 97mm x 59mm x 24.5mm model in either black, silver, red or blue from next month. ES17 The baby of today's three is the £89 Samsung ES17. Just face detection and beauty shot to play with but a reasonable enough 12.2-megapixel sensor and 3x optical zoom. There's still image stabilisation, not that you'll really need it at that magnification, and although you'll get more functionality on a cameraphone these days, they ES17 will probably still give you a better picture. You get what you pay for. Samsung

Bluetooth headsets can be convenient when you are driving and can prevent you from getting a ticket in many states. The issue for some users is that most Bluetooth headsets are expensive devices. Jabra has unveiled a new Bluetooth headset called the BT2080 that is cheap.

The BT2080 headset sells for $39, which is much cheaper than many high-end headsets sell for. To prevent users from accidentally turning the headset off it has a dedicated power button. Support for Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and eSCO is built-in.

The headset can auto pair with mobile phones and has six hours of talk time per charge. The device can also standby for up to 8 days per charge. The overall dimensions for the BT2080 are 53 x 16 x 9mm and it weighs 8 grams. The device ships with a micro USB cable and a universal car charger.
