Dwolla gives immediate access to cash with Instant feature

Posted by on Thursday, 15 December, 2011

Dwolla, an alternative payment system built off cash networks, has quietly been on a roll in its first year, hittingĀ  million in daily transactions in July. Two weeks ago, the Des Moines, IA start-up eliminated fees on transactions for less than , another big step in its bid to replace credit cards.

Now the company is celebrating its first year on the market by introducing a new feature called Instant that addresses one of the lingering pain points in the system: the three to five day delay users face when accessing cash. With Instant, users canĀ deposit money and send cash without the existing wait time built into Dwolla. It will cost users a month to access Instant, a charge that can be opted out of at any time if users aren’t actively using the feature. Users can also have Dwolla pay for an item immediately, up to 0, as long as they pay back the cost within a month. There’s a late fee if people don’t bring their remaining instant balance to by the statement date. But the Instant features gives users flexibility to pay for items immediately, like they do with a credit card and yet not incur big charges.

The idea is that Dwolla is trying to eliminate any barriers to people accessing its network. It’s still going with its main selling point: a 25 cents fee for each transaction over . Users can load up a Dwolla balance or connect their account to a bank account. Dwolla still ensures the same type of security by not transferring personal data with each transaction. Dwolla users can pay friends using the system over social networks or pay for goods online or in store.

The Dwolla system is especially attractive to merchants because it caps the amount of fees they pay for transactions. It’s much cheaper than credit card companies, which can take 2-3 percent and 30 cents for each card transaction. This is especially important for businesses that receive larger payments. The feature works online, and will be coming to iOS and Androiddevices soon.

Dwolla CEO Ben Milne

Dwolla still has a ways to go to gain traction and compete with companies like Square, PayPal and the traditional credit card companies. It has about 70,000 users right now, and several thousand merchants using the system. But it’s catching on with business and consumers who approach this next generation approach to payments.

Dwolla CEO Ben Milne told me that the moves are part of an effort to improve the Dwolla architecture, making it faster, easier to use and safe. He said the big opportunity is in being an alternative to ACH payments, which is a trillion market. So far, 89 percent of the transactions are between businesses and consumers with the average transaction more than 0 to 0.

Milne admits the company has a lot to do to get the word out. But he insists being in the midwest has not hurt Dwolla. In fact, being outside of the finance capital of New York or the tech center of San Francisco has allowed it to understand what the average user wants in a new payment system. Now with Instant, Milne hopes Dwolla is at a turning point as it sharpens its message and value proposition for consumers and merchants.

Galaxy Nexus OTA update quietly rolls out, addresses volume bug

Posted by on Thursday, 1 December, 2011
Google, as promised, has begun rolling out an OTA update for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, in response to a curious volume bug affecting many European users. According to Android Central, “several” Nexus users have reported receiving the update, bundled in a package that weighs a little less than 1MB. Early reports indicate that the refresh only addresses the volume issue, though it appears to be rolling out on a piecemeal basis. If you’ve already updated, let us know how it’s treating you in the comments, below.

[Thanks, Shaun]

Hurt Locker lawsuit targets a record-breaking 24,583 IP addresses

Posted by on Friday, 27 May, 2011
It’s been almost a year since the producers of The Hurt Locker filed a lawsuit against 5,000 alleged pirates suspected of distributing the film via BitTorrent. Now Voltage Pictures has updated its complaint, adding almost 20,000 IP addresses to the list of defendants. That makes it the largest file-sharing lawsuit of all time – a crown previously held by the company behind The Expendables, according to Wired. The plaintiff has already reached agreements with Charter and Verizon to identify individual users, but no such deal with Comcast, who owns nearly half the supposedly infringing addresses. Linking those addresses with user accounts would let Voltage manage individual settlements — probably somewhere between ,000-,000 — rather than continue legal action. All of this eerily echoes the Oscar-winning film’s plot, about an adrenaline junkie who couldn’t resist downloading just one more movie. Or defusing one more bomb. We’re a little fuzzy on the details, but venture into TorrentFreak to scan for familiar IP addresses.

How Safe And Sound Is Your Personal Machine?

Posted by on Monday, 27 September, 2010

There has been an increasing quantity of emphasis in recent times about the subject of maintaining the info on your personal machine safe. The terms Back-Up, Archive, Files Storage and Security being pointed out regularly, but what is all about?

In easy terms, persons are increasingly holding much more and much more data on their computers, be it pictures, individual info and finance, company details, accounts, contacts, addresses and very much more.

What everybody needs to fully grasp is how the facts held on your computer can be a incredibly vulnerable entity and is usually very very easily and entirely lost, either by component failure, malicious acts or theft. If loss in the facts you preserve on your personal computer would cause you distress, then you’ll want to take measures to ensure it’s kept safe and sound and that you would manage to continue even if your personal machine was stolen.

The only definite way of safeguarding against the numerous different kinds of threats is to have a copy of the valuable information and keep it away from your personal computer, this is commonly referred to as back-up. In case of loss, the facts can then be restored to some laptop or computer from your safe back-up copy. A back again up consists of an exact copy of this critical info, kept over a separate storage medium for instance a CD / DVD or an external tape or tough disk drive.

Naturally, a back-up is only as very good as the last time that you actually built a back-up copy, so it can be common practice to produce a brand new back-up frequently and overwrite the previous copy. How regularly you do this depends on how generally your valuable data changes, the much more adjustments, the much more frequent the back-up. A back-up could be performed manually by merely copying the info you wish to back-up for your chosen media, or the method may be automated by applying specialist back-up software programmes. Back-up application enables you to decide on the details that needs for being backed-up, when for making the back-up and where to duplicate the backed-up data to, this set up can then be memorised by the back-up software. Backing-up your info then becomes a comparatively quick and straightforward process.

Quite a few confuse back-up with “archiving”. Archiving is where you transfer files, which is important enough to maintain, but no longer necessary (e.g. older pictures, old accounts) to an exterior, risk-free storage medium for future reference. The archived information is then removed on the computers main hard disk drive to free-up space.

Whether backing-up or archiving, there is often a selection of media you possibly can record your duplicate on to:

Floppy or Zip Disk
A Floppy or Zip Disk push gives a straightforward solution. The downside to this approach on the other hand, is very limited recording space and not a particularly reputable or long-term solution.

Recordable CD or DVD
If you might have a CD or DVD recordable drive, this is really a much better longer-term remedy with much more space. The downside is that the recording practice is usually a pain as you can’t just drag and drop and that you would like CD’s or DVD’s to record on.

This kind of backup may be cumbersome, time consuming and sometimes frustrating, depending on the application and also the high quality of disks used.

When using this technique of backup, remember to verify the disk you have transferred your data to, to make certain your pc can study the disc ok in future.

USB Pen Drives
Also known by a variety of other names USB Pen Drives are an excellent lower expense remedy for smaller back-up purposes getting uncomplicated to implement and they are also fantastic for transferring info from one particular personal computer to another.

External USB Tough Drives
For most users the very best storage alternative for back-up and archiving purposes would be the USB exterior harddrive, becoming reliable, effortless to install (just plug in to your USB port) and effortless make use of (just drag and drop your files to get backed-up). USB Outside Tough Drives are offered in pocket or desktop sizes and storage capacities from a couple of Gb to 250Gb + providing a massive quantity of recording space. Getting a plug in device they can be simply disconnected and kept separate from your computer and out of harm’s way. Some outside USB Tough Drives like Iomega come packaged with back-up application too.

“Obligation of Carry” by Nutnfancy

Posted by on Thursday, 15 July, 2010

Deciding to be an armed, licensed civilian is serious business. Mature, sound judgment and preparation in every facet of this decision must be exercised. And doing so is not cheap, its not convenient, it requires a perishable skill set, and its complicated by many legalities. Also expect you, the armed civilian, to be completely misrepresented by the media, lambasted and characterized as a fringe, paranoid, and borderline un-safe person. Hogwash. But that flak you’ll get does not change the realities of you choosing to be legally armed. Nutnfancy says YOU do incur an “Obligation of Carry” if you decide to walk society as a CCW (Concealed Carry Weapon) or CCP (Pistol) individual. You absolutely must have your gun on you to the maximum extent possible…no joke. Yes there are places where being armed is illegal and inappropriate but there are lot of places where it is not. In fact most places, at least in the US. In this video Nutnfancy addresses the biggest folly of most guys and gals who have gone to the effort of licensing and buying their pistol for legal carry: they just do not carry it. Why is that? Chances are they have chosen a bad system (Nutnfancy term) of carry. Perhaps a bulky or heavy gun that requires special dress and carriage that rapidly becomes so taxing that its soon left at home. I’ve seen this phenomena MANY times over many years: big talk about a big gun but soon that big gun is left at home and by doing so that CCW holder has abandoned his
