There Are Certain Things Regarding Investing In Used Motorcycles That You Should Be Aware Of Before Making A Deal

Posted by on Friday, 15 April, 2011

There have been 3 times in life when folks have told me that I am extremely controlling. This isn’t something that is good to hear. Every time I have heard this I have become very defensive and angry, but upon personal reflection I realize that the observations were correct. This isn’t the greatest feeling, yet I was glad that I have people who care enough about me to point out my mistakes to me. The only way we’re able to grow and change is when we realize what we are actually doing wrong.

My latest episode of being extremely controlling involved my eighteen year old kid. He was searching for motorcycles for sale. I wanted him to take a look at used cars, but no. He isn’t into used cars, because motorbikes are much more attractive compared with used cars. He had been saving his money from a part time job for 2 years. He had talked about having a bike since he was 10 years old. I have always been concerned about this since I know that there are many people who get seriously hurt and killed in accidents every year.

Just a few weeks prior to his birthday he was taking a look at newspaper ads for motorbikes for sale. I went into my full litany about why this actually was not a good idea. We ended up having an argument and both of us said things that we regretted. I informed him that he won’t own a motorcycle while still living at home so he actually threatened to move out and things just escalated. I was feeling terrible and was losing sleep. I didn’t want to back down from my decision.

One of my co-workers who is also a great buddy informed me that I was trying to protect and control my son and in the process was losing him. She pointed out that he was very responsible. He had held the same job for 2 years and maintained good grades in school. He was responsible in driving the family car and he was not at all a risk taker. She pointed out that when he was 18 he would be an adult and I needed to give up trying to control his life.

She was right. It was really difficult to hear and admit, but what she was saying was absolutely true. I called my husband and asked him if he knew which of the motorbikes for sale our son was interested in. I suggested we help him purchase it as a gesture that I would support his choice to have a motorcycle and trusted that he would be safe with it. We informed our son that night that we’d help him buy the motorcycle as his birthday gift. I apologized to him. This is one thing that I have discovered has helped in my relationship with our kids, the ability to admit being mistaken and apologizing when I am.

Ebook sales in the US double year-on-year, paper books suffer double-digit losses

Posted by on Sunday, 20 March, 2011

We doubt the world will ever get to a stage where it’ll completely ditch ye olde paper books, but the US consumer market seems to clearly have its heart set on the electronic kind right now. Net ebook sales in January were this week reported to have accumulated .9 million in revenue for their publishers, which amounts to a 116 percent jump from last year’s total for the month. During the same period, adult hardcovers were down 11.3 percent to .1 million and paperbacks faced a similar reduction in demand and fell to .6 million, a precipitous drop of 19.7 percent year-on-year. Educational and children’s books weren’t spared from this cull of the physical tome, either — skip past the break to see the full statistical breakdown.

Question by Sharon: If you start to reject the latest electronic or gadget, at what pt do you lose touch & start to fall behind?
I know some older people that don’t even own & don’t even like tv or any other electronic.

Just because you reject the latest gadget. Some of them are really stupid. Or don’t have a use for it, like I don’t really have a use for a I-Phone. Doesn’t mean you have to fall behind. In fact you should weigh your purchases carefully anyway and decide if your getting the next gadget because you really will use it. Not just to buy it.
You have to realize that there has been such a revolution in the world with technology. It’s not that the older people can’t really keep up. For most of the adult lives there was either only three channels if they even had a TV. Now we have one in every room with 1000 channels and two computers per household that spews out even more dribble.
Or lives now have become so congested with new technology. When do we as a society decide enough is enough?
It’s buy deciding if we really need the next new gadget. Instead of letting the market execs decide for us.

A New Hobby Means New Products, Lessons And A Lot Of Practice

Posted by on Tuesday, 6 July, 2010

The start of a new hobby is exciting, but even something fun can be overwhelming. Depending on what hobby you have chosen, you may need to shop, practice, or take lessons to learn and enjoy your new hobby. It may take time to get those around you supportive of your new past-time. If you choose something dangerous, those who care about you may have a tough time supporting your new interest. There are several considerations before taking on something new. The last thing you want to do is jump in with both feet, only to find out it is not as enjoyable as you thought, or that it just does not fit into your life. A new hobby is a big commitment and you should take time to carefully consider the cost, and the time you need to be successful. If you are going to make take on a new hobby, it is important for you to know what you are getting into. For instance, if you decide to hire a piano teacher Long Island or a guitar teacher Long Island to learn to play an instrument, you should be sure you have chosen your dream instrument.

As an adult, you will not have music class each semester to switch instruments. Be sure you will enjoy the instrument before you make a financial commitment.

If your hobby is something that could be dangerous if done incorrectly, you are going to need a lot of training with professionals before heading out on you own. Some people decide to take on physical hobbies with some danger in order to make getting in shape fun. If you think rock climbing, fencing, white water rafting, or skydiving will be a great time and help you stick to a physical fitness program, you are going to need significant training in order to be safe. If you get hurt early in the learning process, it will be tough to continue. Nothing, takes the fun out of a new adventure faster than the fear of getting an injury.

You may also have to buy equipment for your new past time. This is the part of a hobby that really tests your commitment. If something is expensive and requires a lot of equipment to make a hobby enjoyable and safe, you may need a big shopping trip all at once. If you can, buy a little at a time or try renting equipment until you know you have made a full commitment. Sometimes lessons allow you to borrow equipment. The important thing is making sure you are in it for the long haul before spending a lot of money.
