Lenovo’s IdeaPad U300S flaunts its trim frame at Computex

Posted by on Sunday, 5 June, 2011

So-called Ultrabooks were all the rage at Computex 2011, and ASUS, LG and Compal weren’t the only ones to stake a claim — this Lenovo IdeaPad U300S is another contender in the ultra-thin, sub-,000 notebook game. Though we hear that Lenovo wasn’t disclosing exact specs or availability at the show, the company’s reportedly upgraded the slick IdeaPad U260 design with Sandy Bridge chips and a 13.3-inch screen, and put the already-trim unibody laptop on a diet to attain supermodel measurements. Here’s hoping the engineers also improved that three-hour battery life too, eh?

[Thanks, Sam]

Coolest Gadgets 2010 Reviewed

According to Wikipedia, a gadget is a small technological object (such as a device or an appliance) that has a particular function, but is often thought of as a novelty. Gadgets are invariably considered to be more unusually or cleverly designed than normal technological objects at the time of their invention. Gadgets are sometimes also referred to as gizmos.  So what are the coolest gadgets 2010?

I’m not going to mention the Apple iPad or the Kindle because you’ll have seen these reviewed somewhere already and I’m not going to talk about the latest mobile phones or digital cameras; there are just too many to pick a favourite anyway, but here are a few of the coolest gadgets 2010 which caught my attention

.
In the UK, the DAB digital radio is all the rage.  The BBC are trying to encourage the British people to switch from analogue to digital listening so anyone who takes an old radio to a retailer can get 10% off the price of their new DAB digital radio.  Digital radio has easier tuning, less interference and some feature the ability to pause and/or rewind a live program.  Why this features as one of the coolest gadgets 2010 is that you can plug your MP3 play or iPod into it and use it as speakers.

Satellite navigations systems have been around for a while now but this year, the features and facilities offered by TomTom and Garmin mean that it’s virtually impossible to get lost.  The TomTom incorporates real time traffic information, maps which include daily updates and driver voice address meaning that the driver just has to say an address to be taken there.  It sounds like the nearest thing to a magic carpet so it has to feature amongst the coolest gadgets 2010.

My favourite for this year is the mini laptop.  What a cool piece of kit.  They’re lightweight and ultra portable.  A good one will come with 2MB of RAM, a 1.66GHz processor and a 250G hard drive.  Battery life varies from around three to seven hours.  Look for one with Windows 7 installed as standard as I think this is an improvement on either XP or Vista but is backward compatible.

So, that’s my list of the coolest gadgets 2010; there are hundreds more so have fun investigating them.

Gadgets: Old Versus New

Posted by on Tuesday, 25 May, 2010

Household gadgets are all the rage these days, from funky stocking fillers, such as odd shaped corkscrews and quirky tin openers, to more practical gadgets like water filters and multi tools. Whether you need your orange peeled or your feet massaged there seems to be a gadget ready and waiting to help you out. In days gone by household gadgets were somewhat of a costly treat for most people, things of luxury to be treasured and passed down through the generations. Nowadays the emphasis on many products is, first and foremost, fun.

The high demand for new and improved household gadgets has seen prices lowered and a huge array of new items filling up shop shelves across the country, but it could be said that making way for new and improved toys has left many of our old gadgets and gizmos obsolete. As the years have gone by the quality and durability of many of our favourite household products has been pushed aside to make way for cheaper and more accessible goods. Items such as toasters, phones and music systems have all gone though some major redesigns over the past few decades and not all of them have made these gadgets more durable.

Complex mechanics are one of the reasons for the low durability our modern household gadgets seem to have. More buttons, lights and fiddly bits unfortunately often means it’s more likely that something will go wrong with your appliance. Similarly, cheaper materials and bad workmanship all contribute to our short-lived sidekick’s downfall.

Some of us rely heavily on our household gadgets for all sorts of different reasons, so flimsy and easily damaged goods can be frustrating and downright annoying. There is some hope however as companies are constantly working to improve dodgy models and are utilising exciting new research and materials to make our household gadgets much more durable. New materials have helped make it possible to build sturdier gadgets. Silicon, PVC and vinyl are all used to great success in the gadgetry world and are helping households make use of their trusty gadgets for much longer than ever before.

Modern gadgets can be fun, great to look at and cheap, but they don’t always stand up to the test of time like their old counterparts. So, if you’re buying expensive gadgets, or have an item you simply can’t live without, you might want to consider getting them covered by contents insurance so hopefully you won’t be without your favourite gadget for long.

FlexibleLove chair now shipping – in Europe and Asia

Posted by on Monday, 26 April, 2010

Remember way back in like 2007 when this chair was all the rage? It’s basically an accordion-style seating system backed with two pieces of plywood and you can fold it and flip it any way you like. It’s eco-friendly and it’s made in China.

Called the FlexibleLove, it’s now available in Europe and Asia. I’m getting pricing right now but let me know if you’ve seen these in the wild and if they’re as amazing as they look.
