So, so many tablets this week at IFA. Archos’s pair of Honeycomb slates may not have garnered the same sort of excitement as, say yesterday’s Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 or Toshiba AT200, but there are a lot of interesting things going on with the 80 G9 and 101 G9. From an aesthetic standpoint, these are pretty nice looking devices (the 80 and 101 look largely the same, save for the difference in footprint and screen size), though they’re not quite on-par with the two aforementioned tablets, in terms of build. Among other things, they’re a bit on the chunky side and have fairly considerable bezels.

Like those devices, the G9 tablets run Android 3.2, though a decidedly less skinned up version than Samsung’s device. And their 1.5GHz processor assures that they can handle the OS with ease. Archos’s tablets also have a few tricks up their collective sleeve. Flip the devices over, and you find a kickstand on one side and a slot on the other than opens up to reveal a USB port designed for the company’s proprietary 3G stick.

Also pretty awesome is the ability to configure their hard drives up to 250GB — a fairly staggering sum in the tablet world. We got to spend some hands-on time with both — check out a video after the break.

If you’re still waiting to pull the trigger on an Android 3.1 tab, decision day may be coming soon. Back in June, Archos revealed two G9 models: the 8-inch 80 and the 10-inch 101. Well… in case you needed time to save up a little extra dough from your paper route, pricing has been revealed ahead of the September release. The smaller of the two tablets will start out at 9.99 and the more stout of the pair at 9.99 (both 8GB base models), a cool Jackson more than originally reported. Just as a quick refresher, keep in mind that beastly 250GB options are available for both, boasting Seagate’s 7mm Momentus Thin HDD technology. You know, if you’re wanting to carry around your entire Metallica bootleg discography on one of these bad boys.

[Thanks, Elliott]

You’d think after unveiling a duo of Android 3.1 slates along with a bare-bones model Archos would have washed its hands of tablets for at least a couple months, right? Of course not — the French company that just won’t quit has sent yet another tab through the FCC, this one dubbed the A70S2. And that’s about all the outfit let slip on the subject — at least until August 19th when the confidentiality protection covering the tablet’s juiciest details expires. The company wouldn’t throw us a screen size, resolution, or even a confirmation that yes, this thing might well run Android like the bulk of Archos’ other tablets. So if this game of “what the heck is this?” doesn’t bear fruit, let’s take the opportunity to have a (one-sided) heart-to-heart with our favorite French tablet maker. Archos, isn’t it about time you added an easy-to-hold, 7-incher with Android 3.1, 250GB of storage, and HDMI-out to the mix? We think it’d fit in perfectly.

When the iPad was unveiled, many folks laughed at its thick bezel, now looking at the FCC documents for what should be the Archos 8 home tablet, we're reminded how thick bezels can actually be. In the document that Archos submitted, the device is labeled as the Model 7800 Android MID. From the documentation, you'll notice that it sports the same Rockchip RK2808 SoC (System-on-Chip) found in the Archos 7 home tablet, and a 800 x 480 pixel resistive touchscreen from Hannstar. The funny thing is that Hannstar lists the display as a 7-inch one while, while the Archos 8 is supposed to have an 8-inch display. Perhaps the bezel plays a part in the reported display size, eh?

When the iPad was unveiled, many folks laughed at its thick bezel, now looking at the FCC documents for what should be the Archos 8 home tablet, we’re reminded how thick bezels can actually be. In the document that Archos submitted, the device is labeled as the Model 7800 Android MID. From the documentation, you’ll notice that it sports the same Rockchip RK2808 SoC (System-on-Chip) found in the Archos 7 home tablet, and a 800 x 480 pixel resistive touchscreen from Hannstar. The funny thing is that Hannstar lists the display as a 7-inch one while, while the Archos 8 is supposed to have an 8-inch display. Perhaps the bezel plays a part in the reported display size, eh?

It goes without saying that when you set off on your travels you pack clean clothes, toiletries and other essentials – such as headache tablets – into your chosen luggage type. But, to get the most out of your time on the move on in your hotel, what else should you take with you? Here’s a top ten of useful items and gadgets:

1. Universal plug – If you are planning to use anything electrical, such as a hair dryer, travel iron or mobile phone charger in your hotel room, then make sure the universal plug is one of the first items you pack.

2. Travel Iron – Unless the grungy, crumpled look is really your thing, pack away a handy little travel iron. You never know when you’ll need that groomed, suave and sophisticated look when on your travels.

3. Archos portable media player – Even on the longest trips you’d be hard-pushed to run out of options with this player. The 160GB memory version holds a staggering 450 full-length movies, 1.6 million photos or almost 80,000 tunes.

4. Laptop with WiFi – Most of the world’s big hotel chains and indeed a lot of the quality independents are now fitted with wireless allowing easy and convenient log-in to your own laptop.

5. Mobile phone and charger – Unless you resolutely refuse to be contactable on your travels, don’t forget your phone and charger! Remember to ensure that your provider has enabled you for roaming before you go! It can also act as your camera!

6. Beer bottle goblets – Even if you can’t get your hands on your favourite ale while away you can always think you’re drinking it. With upended Stella and Sol beer bottles presented as goblets, these are an inventive and novel way to hold your drinks!

7. The Good Book – no not an actual printed bible, but a very cunningly disguised lookalike in which you stash away a 4oz stainless steel flask inside. It’s a great place to hide you booze, as even the most hardened criminal is unlikely to look in the bible for goodies!

8. Hairdryer – this article is not just for the ladies. Most hotels may have their own version but make sure that you pack your 1600watt monster if you want more than a gentle breeze to cross your barnet in your hotel room.

9. Washing up powder and sewing repair kit – Look after your clothes in a cheap and cheerful manner by washing them yourself in the hotel sink! It saves an absolute packet on hotel fees and keeps you sparkling and fresh. Any repairs can be patched up with your sewing kit!

10. First aid kit – Can literally be a lifesaver depending on to where you are traveling. For example if visiting tropical countries serious consideration should be given to taken items like malaria tablets, anti-biotics and sun creams. Even non-tropical travels should include at least headache and gastric relief tablets!

It finally has access to paid apps from the Android Market thanks to the latest firmware. This solves one of the biggest gripes we've heard about the small Android tablets. Previsously users could only download the free Android apps, not the preimum apps that cost something. This is actually a significant move in the Android tablet market, a trend we hope is followed by others.

Previsously users could only download the free Android apps, not the preimum apps that cost something. This is actually a significant move in the Android tablet market, a trend we hope is followed by others.

For some reason most Android tablets do not have access to the full Android Market. Some do not have access at all, instead preloaded with a bunch of apps right from the factory. But part of Android’s appeal is the open system and many tablets aren’t conveying the openness. Hopefully we’ll see more tablets outing firmware that opens up the Android Market to users. Then we’ll be able to have a valid conversation about the iPad vs Android tablets.

The Archos 7 Home Tablet is coming to America, everyone. The product’s US availability has always been in question but now that it’s hanging with the boys down at the FCC, it’s all but announced for America. We still don’t have a release date, though.

The 7 Home Tablet — dumb name, btw — is basically a large-screen version of the Archos 5 Internet Tablet we reviewed a while back. Android still powers the device, but the CPU is a 600 Mhz chip instead of an 800 Mhz model found in the 5 Internet Tablet. But the price is supposed to be slightly lower with the 8GB version retailing for $179 instead of the 5’s $379 price.

It seems that the model that the FCC is playing with is branded with a German wireless carriers logo, implying that it’s a 3G model and we might be one of the models available here in the states.
Another German retailer states it will be available soon somewhat confirming its impeading launch.
Isn't it grand when companies somewhat silently update their products with new hardware but keeps the previous price. That's just what Archos did with the 9 PC Tablet. Overnight it went from the Intel Atom Z510 1.1GHz CPU to the Z515 1.2GHz Atom with Hyper-Threading and Intel Burst Performance Technology. It's a nice little spec bump, actually.

Everything else seemed to remain as it was. The 8.9-inch screen, 32GB SSD, Win7 Starter Edition, and the 1GB of RAM appears to be untouched. A bit more RAM and a larger hard drive should be next, right, Archos? It better be.
