There will be a collector’s edition of StarCraft II

Blizzard just announced, via fancy e-mail, that there will, indeed, be a collector’s edition of StarCraft II, whenever it comes out. (No, Blizzard has not announced a release date yet, but says it will “soon.”) Anyhow, the collector’s edition will come with a 176-page art book, a USB thumb drive loaded with the original StarCraft and its expansion pack Brood War, a behind-the-scenes DVD, a CD soundtrack, a comic book, and a World of Warcraft in-game pet, plus other bonus downloadable content (aesthetic stuff, not like mega-powerful guns or anything). Total cost: $99.

It should be noted that this collector’s edition will only be available at retail stores, so you’ll have to make a trip to GameStop or wherever to nab it.

The standard edition, which will cost $59.99, will be available at retail as well as though Blizzard’s digital download store. The downloadable version will be released “shortly after” the retail version. Hmm…

Both versions will be totally free to play online on Battle.net, and they’ll work with both Windows and Mac.

Remember a few days ago when I hinted at some exciting Tekken news? No? Well, today I can reveal what I was talking about: thanks to the fine folks at Namco Bandai (its publicists, to be exact) we now have three Tekken art books to give away. You can win one! This will be a very easy contest, believe me.

What do you have to do to win the art book? Just leave a comment right here in this post. I’m running this contest, so I’m not going to make you do anything ridiculous. The contest will run through the weekend, and I’ll announce the winners on Monday.

So to recap:

• You can win one of three Tekken art books. That means three people will win. Each book contains drawings, sketches, etc. of the game’s characters. You know, an art book.

• Leave a comment IN THIS POST to be considered. I’ll run the comments through a random number generator on Monday (comment number one is 1, comment number two is 2, etc.) to select the winners. Presumably we’ll have more than three entrants.

• The contest runs till Monday, November 16 at noon EST.

• You need to be a U.S. resident. I’m not paying $8 million dollars to ship this stuff to Manila or Curitiba. Sorry.

Leisure Suit Larry was one of those game franchises I always saw on the shelf at the local computer games store but never bought. I picked up the box and oggled at the titilating pictures on the back, but I never traded my hard-earned cash for the soft-core bonanza that the games offered. I like to think I’m a better man, as a result. Lots of people must’ve bought the game, though, because they released something like eleventy billion different installments. That’s a lot of 16-color skin to admire.

Now, thanks to the wonders of The Internet, you can admire all that skin without ever having to play the games! The Women of Leisure Suit Larry collects some of the better gems from this franchise for your enjoyment.

And as Mr. Harvey James says:

There is a seriously ugly and amazing coffee table art book dying to be made out of this.

I couldn’t possibly fail to agree less.

My goodness, all these low-resolution women remind me of some of the great ANSI art I used to see back when I used BBSes. You know, those things we used before the Internet to get all our porn!

Free night vision goggles with 1 (one) purchase of Modern Warfare 2 “Prestige Edition”

Infinity Ward has spoiled the hopes of Modern Warfare fanbois everywhere by doing their own pre-release unboxing of the special editions of Modern Warfare 2. A little weird having an unboxing for a game not coming out for another three months, but it’s worth it to see what’s in there. Sure, you got your special metal game case, your fun art book that you’ll read so many times, but the kicker is the functioning night vision goggles and sculpted head included in every “Prestige” edition of the game.

Considering a monocular night vision system costs at least $200 by itself (far more for a head-mounted binocular one like they have there), I’m guessing this edition is going to cost you slightly over MSRP for the game.

It’s cool, to be sure, but it’s like including a car with Need For Speed and then pricing the game at $29,000. These things are sold separately for a reason! And I play games with night vision in them because I can’t actually afford real night vision goggles, special edition ones or not!
