Switched On: A suite segment for PlayStation games

Posted by on Sunday, 30 January, 2011

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

One thing that has set Sony apart from its home console rivals has been the extended lifecycles of its hardware. Riding the momentum of a massive install base, both the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 each kept selling strong nearly a decade after their debut, and years after their respective successors were introduced. In fact, as late as 2009, Audiovox began offering a PS2 integrated into an aftermarket ovehead car video system with a 10″ screen. Sony could pursue this strategy in home consoles because the PS2 was the runaway unit volume leader of its generation. Not so with the PSP.

When Sony introduced the PlayStation Portable, it entered a portable console market with fierce, entrenched competition from the incumbent Nintendo, and the powerful widescreen handheld was outsold by the Nintendo DS and its later derivatives. Sony couldn’t attain the market share it needed to steamroll existing competition.

With Sony’s announcements this week, however, the PlayStation purveyors seem to have found a way to take their one-two punch on the road with a strategy that takes the PSP and segments its evolution.

Why does my LCD HDTV have black bars on the left and right sides of the screen?

Posted by on Sunday, 23 May, 2010

I have a 32” widescreen audiovox LCD HDTV. I also own a comcast digital cable box, which we used to view hi-def programs through component cables. We recently got a dvi cable and now sandard-def programs have black bars on the left and right of the screen. Th HD is fine,no black bars. But standard-def channels now have black bars on the left and right, but they did not before when we used component cables. Any help would be appreciated.

In what ways it has improved you ask? Well, aside from being a digital photo frame, it is also a message board.

This means that you can now leave messages in different ways. It has a dry erase board when you can write message and simply wipe them clean anytime. You can also use post it notes and you can also record your own voice. It features a clock plus a digital calendar so it acts like a photo album and an agenda as well. The internal memory can hold up to 512 MB of pictures which will be shown on the 7 inch LCD. The AudioVox Homebase Message Center supports 5 different card formats as well as USB flash drives. Skinput is the latest thing when it comes to cool new tech gadgets. In fact, Skinput is something that defies most human laws and brings technologies way too close to the human race. Skinput is more than a simple gadget; it is a conceptual technology which basically recognizes the user’s taps on his own skin. This concept can be transmitted to different gadgets. Imagine changing songs on your iPod by… clicking your arm. This may be a marvelous idea and a great step for the tech era but it’s a bit too close to chips implanted in our brain if you ask me.

Before explaining this next gadget, maybe it is best if you took a look at the picture below. This gadget is called the Beamz Interactive Music System and I find it pretty difficult to explain how this gizmo works. It looks similar to playing the guitar only here, the gizmo will play different sound when you block the path of the laser beams with your hands. You also get a lot of included CDs and 3 of them are used for set up and there is also a tutorial disc. With 30 Beamz track, you are now on the verge of becoming the new super cool DJ on the block. It can be connected to your laptop or your PC and it takes up a lot of free space in your house. With a price of $300, I’m not sure what this baby can do to make it worth the money. It is said that this gizmo can play 100 music instruments that can cover 20 different music genres. You can also buy different studio software to help you get started with your music career. Are you willing to pay the price?

Audiovox Zentral Controls Your House From Your Phone

It would be great to use your iPhone as a universal remote, wouldn’t it? Sure it would! The only problem is, it doesn’t really work without a clunky IR transmitter attached to it. On the other hand, your iPhone can talk to other stuff through Bluetooth… It’s just too bad that your AV equipment can’t deal with that. You see where this is going, right?

The folks at Audiovox have come up with a system called Zentral, which is just a box plus a universal remote iPhone app. All the box itself really is, is a Bluetooth receiver with a big IR blaster. It doesn’t actually plug into any parts of your TV or stereo, it just sits there, receives Bluetooth signals from your phone, and translates them into IR commands and resends them. You might wonder how it can talk to the front of your equipment if it’s sitting above your equipment, but the IR transmitter it uses is powerful enough to bounce signals off walls and ceilings. There are a bunch of equipment codes that you can enter to get the system talking to your stuff, and you can set up all kinds of custom macros to turn up to 16 different things on and off with a single command.

There are a couple other home automation gadgets that work from the same Bluetooth phone command system, including an iPod dock and a garage door opener, which is a pretty cool idea. They’re working on expanding the system to include things like the thermostat and lighting, and the sky’s the limit, really… If they can pull it off and keep going, it would be great to be able to control virtually your entire house from one app on your phone. And so far, of this stuff is affordable, too: the AV controller is $80, while the garage door opener (which is an easy DIY setup) is $50 (although it’s currently BlackBerry only). Look for it to hit retail this spring.

2010 Brabus Viano “Lounge Concept” – For When A PS2 Just Isn’t Enough

It’s nice that Audiovox has made it easy for anyone to retrofit their minivan with a PS2 gaming system, but sometimes that still doesn’t provide enough distractions for those who aren’t behind the wheel. When you’re in for a particularly long haul you need something like the Viano “Lounge Concept” from Brabus.

It includes such luxury amenities as fully reclining leather seats, bamboo trim, a Dolby Surround sound system and a Nespresso coffee maker, but it’s the 32-inch LCD display, the Sony Vaio laptops, a Vertu Constellation cellphone and the PS3 that most people will be envious of. (And really, that’s all that’s important.) Sadly though, like the headline says, the Viano’s just a concept at this time.
