These May Be The Droids Farmers Are Looking For

Posted by on Sunday, 13 November, 2011

When it comes to farm robots, fruit gets all the attention. But it looks like trees and shrubs could win the prize for first significant agricultural market for small mobile robots. The multi-billion-dollar industry that supplies ornamental plants to building contractors, big-box retailers and landscaping firms has been eagerly awaiting automation for decades. The down economy and harsh state laws targeting undocumented workers have turned up the pressure.

Motorola Corvair 6-inch Android 2.3 tablet outed, destined for the home automation set?

Posted by on Saturday, 5 November, 2011

There are plenty of WiFi-connected remote control apps for tablets, dongles for IR control and even an IR blaster built into Vizio’s tablet, but here’s a Motorola slab purpose-built for the coffee table. The Verge has received several pics of the Motorola Corvair (and its packaging), a “dedicated controller for the connected” …something, which is apparently in testing with unnamed cable companies right now. It’s a 6-inch tablet running Android 2.3, that the box shows working as a remote control and apparently mirroring its display on the TV screen. Other notes indicate it’s optimized for low cost, packs a healthy 4,000mAh battery, and can communicate with other devices via IR or Zigbee’s RF4CE spec (where’s Android@Home?). That would line it up perfectly to tie in with home automation systems like the one Motorola and Verizon just launched, as well as potentially provide a sweet platform for content discovery. The only downside? Unless Moto goes against type, this will probably never see retail and we’ll have to wait on our cable company to figure out a way to charge extra for one and slap their own ugly software on it — here’s hoping that’s not the case.

Dual-armed Teutonic robot plays pool, carefully learns to hustle foolish humans

Posted by on Sunday, 5 June, 2011
Sure, we’ve created interactive pool tables and digitally assisted billiards, but isn’t it time we completely outsourced our pool-playing to brutally efficient robots? The Germans obviously think so, using this year’s International Conference on Robotics and Automation to debut a dual-armed poolbot able to make “easier” shots about 80 percent of the time. Those misses sound a bit like hustling to us, and unlike Willow Garage’s friendly PR2 robot, the German version has a suitably intimidating, industrial look. It’s also a bit of a cheat, using an overhead camera to plan its shots. For the full lowdown on this shark, check the video after the break.

Concept: Iris Transportation For The Blind

Automation is a wonderful thing, and if you want more transport options to be automated too, check out the Iris Autonomous Transport, which is like a robot cabbie that you’re able to flag via a text message, and give your destination via the same method. This vehicle will obviously be using GPS navigation to get around, and will be quite useful for folks who aren’t planning to drive around the city or find it too troublesome. Of course, if this does become a reality, you can be sure that the cab drivers aren’t going to be too happy over losing their jobs.
