While they seem to have a soft spot for drum machines, synthesizers and sequencers, Berlin, Germany-based Soft Machines creates and sells these highly detailed plush versions of old-school electronics. Having absolutely no musical capabilities I’m partial to the plush Nintendo Game Boy myself, but unfortunately since they’re not mass produced in a factory (which isn’t a bad thing) they’re actually rather expensive. At the cheapest end of the scale is the plush Game Boy which sells for about $132 (€99) while the plush Leipzig is the most expensive at about $265 (€199).

Posted by on Saturday, 17 October, 2009

Europe's biggest and most heard of technology/electronics expo is upon us. The expo is well known for making big announcements to the technology world and I bet that this year will be no different from the last. This could be anything from surveillance equipment to new computer game consoles – The expo literally has it all! This year the show will be in Berlin, Germany and there are rumours of Phillips, Sony, Toshiba and Samsung to be there making some big revelations from new TVs to Blu-Ray players and walkmans.

Showcasing technology is one thing but the IFA also goes out of it's way to showcase the latest eco-friendly software, hardware and gadgets too. You will be able to see prototype products being tested and previews of the latest gadgets to hand. You will be priveledged to see some other smaller companies showcasing their latest technology. You could get to see anything from new night vision technology to the latest gadgets to improve on audio surveillance. The event starts on Friday 4th September so hurry up and get a ticket if you are interested in attending.

In 2008 the expo proved to be a massive success with the spectacle being around the latest Samsung Jet phone which was released a little earlier this year. It was designed to rival the iphone and I think it has real potential. As the internet and television are so closely linked in with eachother you will definetly see some crazy gadgets linked in with the latest 3G technology. This year we have just seen the release of the 3G iphone which has completely blown people away with its endless capabilities on the net.

So, it would be worth it to keep an eye on the expo this year as there un-doubtedly going to be some awesome gadgets and gizmos out there for everyone!

Face it: The best stuff is expensive

Burmester B25 speakers

Here at CNET we write about all sorts of gadgets and toys, but I’ve noticed that when I write about high-end gear I get the biggest reaction.

I like hearing about stuff I can’t afford, like the recent road test of the $80,000 Jaguar XFR. The big sedan can hit 162 mph, can stop from 150 in 6 seconds, and it’s a ball to drive fast. Funny, the road tester never mentioned fuel economy. There you go, people don’t buy $80,000 cars for their practicality, they buy them to be seen in and for how well they perform.

High-end audio isn’t so different, but it’s more private. High-end buyers’ families and friends are the only ones who’ll ever get to be bowled over by the sound and looks of their spectacular audio systems. So while you’ve probably heard of Jaguar, chances are you’re less familiar with high-end audio brands. I’m here to help raise awareness of quality audio.

I write about the world’s best audio gear for “Home Entertainment” magazine, and I recently had the pleasure of testing the Burmester 032 integrated stereo amplifier ($22,495) and B25 speakers ($11,995/pair). Burmester is based in Berlin, Germany. The company builds the sort of hi-fis a Jaguar owner would buy.

The 032 amplifier’s sculptured metalwork is drop-dead gorgeous. The amplifier’s front and sides are covered by machined heat sinks. They provide optimal cooling for the stereo 240-watt-per-channel amplifier’s output transistors, eliminating the need for noisy fans. Burmester components, fully decked out in chrome, are a startling sight to behold.
