Sirius XM proves its worth this week with Winter Music Conference broadcasts

Posted by on Tuesday, 23 March, 2010

There’s one week per year that there’s reason to listen to Sirius XM beyond XM Channel 202 The Virus. That’s right, it’s Winter Music Conference time, a time when the world’s top DJs and producers descend upon Miami and have themselves a good ol’ Dionysian time. House music, trance, progressive, Dutch tourists trying to find food that won’t kill them, etc. It’s a good example of what satellite radio could have been.

It’s probably not too crazy to call Sirius XM a niche product, and I’m fine with that. Again, so long as I get to hear the occasional healthcare rant by Anthony, or hear Fez flip out on interns, I’m more than happy with Sirius XM. Every single other channel could disappear and I wouldn’t mind one bit.

Aside from this week! On Channel 80, Area, today begins Sirius XM’s annual broadcast of the Winter Music Conference. It’s basically a five-day electronic music party. Now, electronic music isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time, but I can think of no better music to accompany a late night World of Warcraft grinding session.

Surprisingly, Sirius XM usually does a good job in broadcasting the festival. It’s non-stop: coverage from various parties, live DJ sets, interviews with producers, etc. “Oh, so that’s what Chris Lake sounds like!”

So yeah, the one week of the year that my Sirius XM dial leaves Channel 202 The Virus for any amount of time. As soon as I hear “Satellite of Love” at the end of Ron and Fez, it’s WMC time.

I haven’t really paid attention to that whole scene in the past year—who’s the big name producer these days?

The Effects Of Different Genres While Learning To Play Guitar

Posted by on Thursday, 7 January, 2010

While you’re learning to play guitar, it’s all to straightforward to get stuck into a groove of playing only one style. Whilst this is often plenty of fun to do, it won’t help you evolve as a guitarist all that much, and it might light the way to you becoming rather held back as a guitarist.

As a metal guitarist, when I started learning to play guitar I instinctively gravitated towards the lightning fast axemen around at that era, but that began to limit the sort of licks and riffs I was capable of, and I discovered that learning to play guitar was about more than following your heroes.

The key to moving yourself on as a guitar player is to be certain you experiment with some other genres that may complement those that you are familiar with. For hard rock and heavy metal guitar players, good genres of music to test out would be the blues and classical music.

Blues playing and classical guitar playing include a lot of the elements that finished up creating the heavy metal and hard rock in evidence right now, and studying these genres can in turn add a further layer to your own playing. The key’s to never limit yourself when Learning To Play Guitar. Limiting the styles you learn boundaries your development, and the last thing you need is to get stuck playing the same thing repeatedly again without any room to grow and create better music.

The fundamentals of each particular genre might take asmall getting used to, but the results on your own individual skills will be tough to miss. Guitar players you could check out would include players like Yngwie Malmsteen (for the classical influences), Michael Lee Firkins (for country and blues influences) or Ritchie Kotzen (for blues influences).

Check out examples of country or bluegrass, or ska. Try anything that is a tiny outside your comfort section along with your own personal inspiration sources. Not only will you evolve into a much more rounded guitar player, but getting to know with these other disciplines will help Learning To Play Guitar be more fun and masses more gratifying.
