Far from sneaking in to the living room, Vestel had a BitTorrent Certified television on display at IFA 2011 this past week. That official stamp means it packs the usual suite of connected TV features including playing local media across the network, and it’s guaranteed to work with BitTorrent approved files from the internet. There’s no word on any official release for this prototype — and we haven’t been able to locate anyone who got a hands-on demo, let us know if you saw it — but it definitely shows how BitTorrent is trying to expand its platform in a manner similar to DivX and XBMC / Boxee. Check out the press release after the break, we’ll be sitting back and watching some totally legal content we just torrented.

Sandvine said in a special report titled Netflix Rising (PDF) that the average Netflix user consumes about 40 GB of bandwidth per month. However, consumption seems to be much higher when Netflix is consumed with a connected device capable of receiving HD streams. The company singled out owners of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 in particular: Users that stream Netflix through their Xbox 360 consume about 80 GB of data per month on average.

Unfortunately, we are not just talking about a few heavy gamers with Netflix co-dependencies: Around 25 percent of all Netflix traffic is consumed through the game console, according to Sandvine, with 33 percent of all Xbox 360 game consoles being used to stream Netflix content. One has to wonder how many of those Netflix-loving Xbox owners are poised to hit AT&T’s bandwidth cap with their next movie marathons.

Sandvine also compared Netflix traffic to other sources of bandwidth usage, pointing out that the video subscription service now uses close to 30 percent of North America’s peak bandwidth, surpassing BitTorrent as the largest source of data traffic in North America.

Still using BitTorrent? Using a Mac? Want to try out a leaked beta of Microsoft Office 2011? Clearly you see where I’m going with this.

Right, so a beta of Microsoft’s latest version of Office for Mac, Office 2011, has leaked onto various BitTorrent sites. I see it on the one tracker I still frequent, but I don’t know if my 24 years have prepared me for the raw excitement of Typing Things in a beta of Word.

But, if you’re the type of person that appeals to, keep your eyes peeled, for the beta (beta 2, specifically,) is “in the wild,” as they say.

There’s no release date for Office 2011 for Mac, but its Windows equivalent, Office 2010, is available now to MSDN and TechNet subcribers, to be released to the public at large in the coming weeks.
