Marines buy portable armor that comes in a flat pack

This is strangely cool. A defense contractor developed a type of steel reinforced armor that could replace the basic sandbag encampment. The armor assembles extremely quickly and is resistant to bullets, grenades, and IED blasts. It also takes about 10 minutes to put together without tools. It really is amazing the new technology that is coming out for the military.

The McCurdy’s Armor (named after a soldier who died in 2006) comes complete with gun ports, steel plated armor, and different levels of construction for different tasks. The Marine Corps has already bought 14 of the reusable units, however there’s no word if they are actually in use in any conflict areas. Seems like a great concept to me.

Kevlar Wallpaper Protects Against Bombs, Wild Parties

There are two places where bomb-proof wallpaper would come in really, really handy: war zones, and college. I guess college is less deadly most of the time, but you also don’t have the US Government offering to step in and pay for replacement drywall after your roommate decides that it would be fun to try and kick his way through to the adjoining room by swinging from your bunk bed. X-Flex wallpaper is made from a “Kevlar-like material” (Kevlar itself being a trademark of DuPont, in case you were wondering) sandwiched between an elastic polymer wrap. It’s lightweight, portable, and a cinch to install relative to the protection it offers: you just peel off the back, stick it to the wall, and bolt it to the ceiling and floor and you’re done. You can even wallpaper or paint over it if you don’t like the color. Popular Science put X-Flex to the test with a wrecking ball as you’ll see in the video below, but to forestall any objections, you can also see X-Flex withstanding an actual bomb blast on their website.

For those of you who are especially paranoid, it’s certainly worth mentioning that X-Flex is not actually intended to protect against ballistics, like bullets or shrapnel, just blasts and blunt impacts like bombs and drunken roommates. A commercial version of the military grade wallpaper is due out next year.

If I had one of these things, I’d never get any work done. Unless I was a rally driver, in which case I’ll I’d be doing was work, work, work. Unfortunately (in this case at least) I’m just a blogger, so I don’t won’t be getting paid for zooming around the mountains in a cross between a tricked-out Subaru and a snowtank. Yes, I know there’s no such thing as a snowtank, but you know what I’m talking about.

This beast isn’t exactly unprecedented (they need vehicles like this to get around at resorts, for filming, etc) but it is reportedly the fastest one out there. And once you get over the weird look it has (triangle-wheels) it’s actually pretty attractive.

Incidentally, there need to be more snow-racing games. Driving down a freaking mountain, there’s something you don’t get to do in real life. No more “Need For Speed” on regular streets. I want to drive down the Matterhorn, people!
