So far, the extent of Sony’s 2012 smartphone portfolio for the US extends only to the AT&T-bound Xperia Ion, with no word just yet whether the see-through banded Xperia S will arrive on American shores. What happens if it was called the Xperia Sola? That very name’s showed up at the US Patent and Trademark Office, although that’s largely it. So it could be a phone we’ve already seen, or perhaps one of those many road-mapped pseudonyms. Well, with a certain big mobile event just around the corner, we’re sure to get a few more answers on Sony’s other plans for the New World later this month.

We’ve come across an internal document from Bell Mobility that’s bound to raise the hopes of a few good Canadians. Yes folks, we’re talking Ice Cream Sandwich. The carrier to the north estimates that it’ll have Android 4.0 ready for the Sensation in February, which is to be followed by the Raider’s update in March — this handset may be more familiar to AT&T customers as the Vivid. Pulling up the rear, users of the Galaxy S II are to expect the upgrade in April, and while the Optimus LTE is also mentioned, there’s no specific time frame for that one. Certainly estimated release dates don’t always come to fruition, but at least we know what Bell’s aiming for, anyway.

It’s the plane so nice, they unveiled it twice. Boeing once again presented its long-awaited and much-delayed 787 Dreamliner to client All Nippon Airways, but this time the goods were officially delivered. After taking the wraps off the airliner early this August, the aerospace company managed to get a flight-ready unit over to its Everett, Washington production plant for a celebratory hand-off. Despite a fit of stops and starts for the line’s rollout, Boeing expects to meet ANA’s order of its future 55-strong fleet, producing an additional 20 craft for the Japanese airline by 2013′s end. If you want to be among the select few to call “First!,” you might want to consider booking that Japan-bound vacation now.

Despite its rather curious name, the LG Optimus EX (aka the LG SU-880) just might be your soulmate — provided you live in South Korea. The 9.5mm device appears ready to take SK Telecom by storm with a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU (with no indication of make or model), Android 2.3, 4-inch WVGA TFT-LCD display and five megapixel camera; it’s also said to be coming in black and white varieties. We admit, it’s not the type of spec sheet that induces a large amount of salivation, but we imagine many will be seduced by the new device — if the price is right, that is. No word on pricing or availability yet, but we’ll hopefully know more once we get officially introduced to the new handset.

With a tablet market dominated by the svelte iPad 2, a device with a “chunky design” isn’t bound to Thrive. According to Notebook Italia, Toshiba’s expected to announce a new ultra-thin tablet at IFA this week, swapping full-size USB and HDMI ports for micro-USB, micro HDMI, and microSD slots in order to shave off a few millimeters from last year’s model, leaving the new device with a sleeker, much more appealing design. The rumored slate is expected to ship with a TI OMAP4460 dual-core 1.5GHz processor, an edge-to-edge screen, and a brushed-metal housing. Other specs, including Android version and screen size are a bit thin at this point, but we should have only a few more days to wait before Toshiba’s new tab makes its glorious IFA debut in Berlin.
