Lyneborg bot carves models of magnetic fields, dares the future to have a look (video)

Posted by on Tuesday, 22 November, 2011

If you’re going to create a robot that carves something, have it carve models of an invisible field. This is what Frits Lyneborg, creator of the Yellow Drum Machine, has done with a new homemade bot that uses a combination of motors, pulleys, small drills, makerbeams and magnetic sensors. The end result is a robot that, when combined with the interpretative software, can literally read a magnetic field and move the robot’s components to cut an accurate model from a crumbly-yet-strong material known as ‘Oasis Brick.’ You can witness the magic yourself in a video after the break, and if you’ve any advice for making it better, drop Frits a line there in the via link.

Plick hitches an elastic ride on the DIY robotics train (video)

Posted by on Saturday, 16 July, 2011

Man, we hope Gumby’s collecting some royalty checks for this one. One part incredible-stretching toy, and one part DIY robotics kit, the Plick project takes the traditional hobbyist approach to brick-building your own bot and slaps a little rubber all around it. The industrial design prototype from Brazilian engineer Gabriel Paciornik combines programmable robotic parts with an elastic wired connection suitable for strapping your mad scientist creations to everyday objects. So, what can you make? The kit packs a variety of sensor-based circles that react to distance and sound, giving your mod-jobs the power of movement and light. It’s safe to say this not-for-market toy veers far from LEGO Mindstorms NXT territory — and that’s exactly the point. Far out video demo and its 60s beach music soundtrack after the break.

Lego Fan Creates 250,000-Brick ‘Garrison of Moriah’

Posted by on Sunday, 29 May, 2011

Usually, the only constraint on building a Lego creation is your imagination. Unless, that is, you build a giant structure that demands its own “Lego room.” Say hello to the “Garrison of Moriah” and the 540-square-foot room it inhabits. Inspired by the fantastic buildings in Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings, it’s a huge, detailed sculpture built to the scale of the tiny Lego “people” that inhabit it.

Rising Fuel Prices And Why It’s Important To Select The Correct Van Or Truck

Posted by on Monday, 9 May, 2011

Rising fuel costs has made it tougher for people to simply drive what thay want, and go on journeys that in the old days would have been non essential. The rising price of diesel and petrol is talked about all over the world, and doesn’t appear to be getting any better. Unfortunately there is not a great deal that can be done for the average person, and the only option for quite a few is to cut back their consumption.

Nevertheless, if you need to hire a van or truck you may want to look at the size of the vehicle to determine if it is fuel efficient. Some bigger vans basically are no longer fuel efficient, and you may be better renting a smaller van for your purpose. The preference of van hire or truck hire that you decide on should be thought about carefully, and there are a number of different variables that you need to look at. As well as the price to hire the van you also need to think about the type of fuel that it will need to have put in to it.

You will require to seriously consider what you have to move, and try and hire a van rental or truck rental that can do the load in one trip. Truck and vans are very heavy vehicles, and this is often the main factor when it comes to fuel efficiency. Heavier trucks will use more diesel no matter what the length of journey you intend to do. Many people can drive larger trucks on their current license, but are put off by the size. Nevertheless, you may shell out more to hire a larger truck or van, but it will take less time and fuel to get the job done.

The way that the truck or van is driven will also play a large part in the overall amount of fuel that you use for your journey. However many people try to vans, and trucks the way they drive their car, and this simply isn’t possible. Driving a truck or van is like trying to maneuver a brick, and it is far from aerodynamic. Your whole driving attitude needs to change, and the style that you approach the journey needs to be entirely different.

Fuel economy can be significantly improved by learning not to accelerate, and brake un-necessarily throughout the journey. You will also notice that when the truck or van is heavier it will require to be driven differently. Although you cannot reduce the cost of the diesel that you need to fill the truck or van up with, by mindful planning, and organization you will be able to cut down some of the expense.
