May 28: UFC Undisputed 2 puts you in a triangle joke

Posted by on Wednesday, 13 January, 2010

We now know when UFC Undisputed 2010 will be on store shelves: May 28. Well, for the UK, that is. I do believe the North American release date is May 25. Beyond that, what’s known about the game? Not a damn thing, baby!

I’ve embedded the trailer, which debuted at the Spike Video Game Awards last month, for your convenience. You’ll notice the lack of Brock Lesnar. My guess is that when THQ was filming Mr. Lesnar was in the hospital recovering from that intestine thing he has.

Still, Frank Mir is there, talking trash as only he can.

It cannot be overstated how important this video game is to UFC as a company. The latest numbers I read indicated that a full 25 percent of the company’s revenue last year came from the video game. Twenty-five percent! That’s huge, especially considering that the company, only a few years prior, was 100 percent dependent upon pay-per-view revenue to stay afloat (not that it’s having a hard time finding people to buy the shows).

So yeah, May 25/28. Be there~!

Shock study: Wii Fit alone won’t get you into shape (nor is it supposed to, by the way)

Shocking study coming out of the University of Minnesota that says Wii Fit won’t get you into shape, despite what you may think. Well, to be specific, the study says the game won’t produce “significant changes in daily physical activity, muscular fitness, flexibility, balance or body composition.”

The study, which took place over six months, looked at eight families in North America and gave them the game for three months, then took away the game for three months.

It found that families used the game an average of 22 minutes per day.

You’ll recall that Americans watched TV for an average of 18 hours per week, or 2.57 hours per day. Yeah.

That’s the thing: Wii Fit isn’t exactly heavy training, so using it for only 22 minutes per day and changing nothing else about your lifestyle wouldn’t produce any sort of noticeable fitness result. The game is supposed to help train you into the habit of taking in less calories than you burn, how to be conscious of that fact that a hamburger has more calories than a banana, etc.

So use Wii Fit to develop healthy habits, which is what Nintendo has always said the game was about, and not to look like Brock Lesnar or George St. Pierre.

Hard work is hard.

Braving the weather to see New Super Mario Bros. Wii at the Nintendo World Store

New Super Mario Bros. Wii hits stores today, and it will probably be on of the biggest games of the year. (Little Tommy and Little Susie shouldn’t be playing Modern Warfare 2!) To celebrate the launch of this latest Mario game, Nintendo invited its fans to the Nintendo World Store in New York yesterday. In addition to being able to buy the game a whole day early, fans could participate in a Mario tournament, get their picture taken in Mario garb, play the older games in the series, and meet Gary and Alison from Nintendo Week.

It was basically madness. I strolled in, along with my younger brother (who desperately wanted to meet the Nintendo Week hosts… it’d be like me wanting to meet Brock Lesnar or Lionel Messi), and found the Nintendo World Store swarming with children. You immediately realized that yeah, for all of the money games like Modern Warfare 2 or Assassin’s Creed II make, Nintendo’s audience is completely different. That’s not exactly breaking news, no.

Unfortunately for the Nintendo faithful, New York was being battered by the remnants of Hurricane Ida, so it was windy, rainy, and gray all day long. That made standing in line to buy the game much more of a hassle, and meant that I was juggling my camera, an extra lens, and an umbrella while trying to avoid running into anybody while taking photos.

The line to buy the game was quite long, stretching about halfway down the block. I waited, like an everyman, and was out there for around 20 minutes. Keep in mind that I find the idea of waiting in line for a video game to be ludicrous, but you sometimes have to make exceptions.

That’s about it. It was a fun little afternoon, only hindered by the fact that it was something like 98-degrees Fahrenheit upstairs (where the tournament took place). I also ran into E-Rock from the Opie and Anthony Show, which was pretty great in its own right.

I’ll have my thoughts on the game itself in the coming days.

Muito obrigado, Dragon Quest: Nintendo DS sales double after game’s release

Just how big is Dragon Quest in Japan? Not only did the game sell some 2.3 million copies already, but it helped double the sales of the Nintendo DS. In MMA terms, Dragon Quest is a huge, Brock Lesnar-like draw.

The week before the game went on sale, Nintendo sold 51,601 DSs. That number jumped to 126,785 after the game’s release.

There’s still no U.S. release date, but given that Square Enix takes its sweet time localizing games, it could be something of a wait.

Or, you could hop on eBay and buy a copy of Dragon Quest VIII for the PS2. If you’re not prepared to grind for more than hour just outside the starting village, then maybe it’s not the game for you.

Final Fantasy is child’s play compared to Dragon Quest.
