If it’s a geek badge of honor to find an entirely new use for something, then the grad students at UC Irvine have earned theirs. Over at the university, a group of grad students have hacked an off-the-shelf digital light projector to create a spatial frequency domain imaging system. Once complete, the budding mad scientists were able to image their thesis adviser’s bicycling injuries and have used it to measure the oxygenation of skin flaps during reconstructive breast surgery. Click past the break for a video of the device in action, and remember this: helping your professor with their sports injuries and reconstructed bosoms may not equal Dean’s List, but it sure can’t hurt.

Hi! So let begin today by showing you my first demo reel done back in falls 2006 for my 2d3d animation class. Now that we are in 2009….3 yearssssssss after!!!!! lol I’m getting old… I can now look back at it and have some constructive critics and comments.
First of all,,, the music… The music is somehow critical but not to critical in a way. In this case this is a really slow and soft song by Massive attacks : ”teardrop” . I think this is the kind of song that someone might want to use. Why? because it is slow and soft!! Lol OK let get serious…
When you put music on a demo reel you don’t want it to be aggressive, attractive and to distracting in comparison of your content. If the song is the new hit parade song it may distract the employer. If it is to aggressive they might want to stop even before starting to watch it or finish it. If its that the case and one of your better piece is at the end your screw. At the opposed I’m not too sure with too heavy classic song to,,, you know the one like Beethoven or Wagner Valkyries… Heavy metal…. mmm not really I’m a big fan but that may be too much… techno…. that may do but depend on the song and on the rhythm of your demo… Some demo of animation do well with techno song. I have a friend of mine who done it and it happen to be a nice and paced demo. The rhythm in the music and the demo is really crucial… it kinda give a better impression when the timing between the beat and the switch of image are in sync. You remember in the beginning when I said that it is crucial in a way and not in another?? I recall have been called for a interview in a company for a modelling job. They ask me to sit at the table and then the two employers start my demo reel before my eyes. Needless to say my face was becoming red. I think it was one of my first interview for a 3d job… SO they start my demo reel and then mute the song of before even it start! So good for me who was proud of his choice of song….. They just want to see the model that I’ve done… The conclusion…. I guess it depend on the employers, but try not makes them throw your demo reel in the basket before that they even see if you suck or not…. :OP
So this is it for today’s post…. I planned to talk about all the facets of a good demo reel in the same article but I realized it would be too much long. So Stay tune for tomorrow where I will talk about the length and what should be included in a demo reel! :O)

There have only been a few games that I’ve been more excited about that Command & Conquer 4: Half-Life 2, Day of Defeat: Source, and Command & Conquer Red Alert 2. That’s it. C&C 4 should launch on March 16, 2010, but follow this quick guide ASAP and you’ll be able to see a bit of the game early through the beta program. But you better hurry. There is limit to the amount of keys they are giving out.
It seems like EA has teamed up with Gamespot for this program. Fine with me.
Head over to the Gamespot C&C4 page and either sign in or make a new account
Remember the supposedly dead (well at least unconscious) guy on display through Google Street View? As a comment to that post, reader Peter Condes shares the following (thanks man!):
Steetviewing ’round the streets of Philadelphia, I found this guy:
Yes Peter, most likely tired of being hopeless and with no hope. Any service, online or not, is definitely mainstream when it captures the dirty underbelly of our neat and efficient society. I just wish people start sharing Google Street Views of happy families picnicking at the park or something, and I wouldn’t mind if such a scene was watermarked with Google’s copyright like the picture above.

If you’ve been following the Command & Conquer 4 development, you probably know the final game in this series is going to be a bit different. Base development has taken a backseat to the action and the 5 minute video after the jump clearly shows that. Hopefully not all of the magic that made C&C special has been wiped out though. That would make me sad.

Forget Modern Warfare 2, the real action is coming out on March 16 when C&C 4 is released. Teasers and trailers have been slowly filtering out over the last few months but EA finally let released the launch date. I’m already making my construction paper chain to count down the days. Oh, and there’s good news if you’re going to pre-order the game.
Those that are willing to pay for the game before it’s released will be invited to the multiplayer beta, and given a bonus mission and the game’s official soundtrack. How cool is that? I mean, you’re going to buy the game anyway so you may as well score some extras. All the details are here.
