Gitzo Athena Remote Camera Head

So maybe you’re not a cameraman on a budget, and DIY hardware like the Nintendo DS based Open Camera Controller we posted earlier doesn’t appeal to you. In that case you might want to check out Gitzo’s new toy. The company is known for their brilliant carbon fiber tripods, monopods and other photography gear that’s well out of my price range, and I’m sure their new Athena remote camera head, which was shown at the CP+ 2010 Exhibition in Yokohama this past weekend, will continue in that tradition of awesomeness and expensiveness.

According to Gizmag, the remote controlled Athena allows photographers to mount their camera in places too dangerous or inconvenient for them to stand. The gimbal is controlled via software running on a PC, which not only lets the photographer adjust the camera’s various functions and settings, but also lets them remotely pan, tilt and roll the head. Of course having a modern DSLR with live-view capabilities is pretty much a requisite if you want to remotely reframe a shot, but odds are if your job requires gear like this, you’ve also got the budget for the latest and greatest in camera equipment. Official pricing and availability hasn’t been announced yet, but I’m sure it will be posted to Gitzo’s website once it’s back on its feet.

Coronation Street on Google Street View

Posted by on Wednesday, 2 December, 2009

Everyone’s looked at their own house and had a nosey up and down their own street and around the local shops. But now you can check out Coronation Street on Google Street View. The 360-degree images of the famous cobbles have taken the Google Street View team months to piece together, but they are now available for you to explore as if you were an actual Corrie character or visitor wanting to find your way to the Kabin or Roy’s Rolls. Coronation Street is the first TV soap to feature on Google Street View. The soap’s producers threw open the gates to the set for the special Google car with camera equipment on its roof earlier this year to mark the re-launch of its websites. A Corrie spokesman said: “Thanks to Street View, fans will be able to have a good nose around the set in a way that would have been unimaginable almost 50 years ago when the show first aired.”

Brando’s Fake Generic Lighter Spy Camera Camcorder

Ok, it’s cool that we’ve managed to shrink digital video and camera equipment to the point where it can be hidden almost anywhere. But just because we can, doesn’t mean we should! Case in point, this somewhat innocuous looking Bic-esque lighter hides a 640×480 25fps video camera and a 1280×1024 digital still camera. While you could probably get away with snapping the occasional covert photo while lighting up a smoke, how are you supposed to nonchalantly capture a video with this thing? Not to mention when someone inevitably asks you to borrow a light and discovers the USB connector hidden under the cap. Oh and the fact it doesn’t actually produce a flame. $49 from Gadget.brando.com.hk.
