Hit Strictly Sexual becomes a series, but stays on Hulu

Posted by on Sunday, 21 August, 2011

If you’re the makers of one of the most popular films of all time on Hulu, what’s your next move? For writer Stevie Long and director/producer Joel Viertel, the answer was simple: Keep a good thing going.

The independent film Strictly Sexual arrived on Hulu in 2009, at a time when there were far more TV series than movies available on the service. However, Sexual premiered strongly, ranking as one of the top five most-viewed movies on the site — and more importantly, it stayed that way. According to Viertel and Long in a phone interview, Sexual has been in Hulu’s top 10 pretty much every day since 2009, and has also enjoyed enormous success on Netflix and other digital platforms — a remarkable achievement for a film whose most-recognizable star is Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s Amber Benson.

Viertel admitted that Sexual‘s provocative title might have helped people discover the film initially, but that “if you don’t have a good product it doesn’t really matter — at the end of the day, if it’s not a good movie people aren’t going to watch it or recommend it to their friends.

“And the title is ironic,” Long said, “because the movie’s really about people falling in love and having relationships.”

The film’s success has lead to the creation of an original series that premiered on Hulu this week. Shot in 18 days on a Canon 5D (an improvement on the camera used for the original film), each 30 minute episode continues the story of Joe (Johann Urb), Stanny (Long) and others looking for love in Los Angeles.

Hulu has a six-week exclusive on the series, after which episodes will be available on Netflix, Amazon Prime and other platforms. “It’s going to be everywhere,” Long said.

That will also include the rest of the planet: Content Media Corporation, which acquired worldwide distribution rights to the series, will be pitching the show at content market MIPCON for broadcast and digital platforms.

Viertel and Long are both actively working on other projects — Viertel was a co-producer on The Adjustment Bureau, and Long is developing a script with Christopher McQuarrie — but look forward to them potentially creating a second season of Strictly Sexual for the web, depending on the first season’s success. The plan is that the first season will pay for the next.

“Web TV is rooted in character, and indie films are rooted in character — people identify with that and want to see it. [The web] is a viable way for indie filmmakers to make a living putting their content out there — the new home for the next big indie hit is Netflix or Hulu,” Long said.

Of course, what’s key is the budget. “If the movie had cost 10 mill, it would be a very different scenario,” Viertel said. “There’s a cutoff for how much something can cost before it stops making sense.”

The Canon 5D mk II 2.0.4 firmware fixes the mess left by 2.0.3

Posted by on Friday, 19 March, 2010

The 5D mk II 2.0.3 firmware was supposed to be the end-all solution for the Canon super camera. But it wasn’t. It caused more issues not worth the enhanced movie mode it added. Canon of course of pulled the firmware from its site cause many 5D mk II owners to cry a little. Because, as everyone knows, Canon owners are notoriously emotional unlike the cool and collected Nikon crowd. But chin up 5D mk II owners, the proper firmware is now available.

Canon

In the Version 2.0.4 firmware, the following phenomena that occurred with the Version 2.0.3 firmware (which was to enhance the movie functions) have been corrected.

There was a phenomenon in which the manual recording settings made in C1/C2/C3 were changed and sound could not be recorded if manual sound recording was used in the C1/C2/C3 settings and the camera was subsequently turned off (or if Auto Power Off was activated). This does not occur in modes other than C1/C2/C3.
The Version 2.0.4 firmware includes the movie function enhancements listed in items 1 through 5 below, and also incorporates the correction listed in item 6.

Adds or changes the following movie frame rates.

NTSC:
1920×1080 : 30 fps (changed – actual 29.97 fps)
1920×1080 : 24 fps (added – actual 23.976 fps)
640×480 : 30 fps (changed – actual 29.97 fps)
PAL:
1920×1080 : 25 fps (added – actual 25.0 fps)
1920×1080 : 24 fps (added – actual 23.976 fps)
640×480 : 25 fps (added – actual 25.0 fps)

Adds a function for manually adjusting the sound recording level (64 levels).
Adds a histogram display (brightness or RGB) for shooting movies in manual exposure.
Adds shutter-priority AE mode (Tv) and aperture-priority AE (Av) mode to the exposure modes for shooting movies.
Changes the audio sampling frequency from 44.1 KHz to 48 KHz.
Fixes a phenomenon where communication between the camera and the attached lens is sometimes interrupted after manual sensor cleaning. (This phenomenon only affects units with Firmware Version 1.2.4.)
Caution:

Firmware Version 2.0.4 is for cameras with firmware up to version 2.0.3. If the camera’s firmware is already version 2.0.4, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
Movies captured using EOS 5D Mark II cameras with Firmware Version 1.1.0 to 1.2.4 can be played back on cameras updated with Firmware Version 2.0.4. However, if you try to play back movies captured with a camera with the new firmare on a camera with a previous firmare version, a message, Cannot play back image, appears on the camera’s LCD monitor.
It is recommended that you use the latest Canon applications*1 to edit movies captured with EOS 5D Mark II cameras that have the latest firmare because some previous versions do not support movie-editing functions and the frame rates that are added or changed by the latest firmware. You can download the latest Canon applications from our Web site.
*1 ZoomBrowser EX Version 6.5.0 or later (compatible operating systems : Windows XP/Vista/7)
ImageBrowser Version 6.5.0 or later (compatible operating systems : Mac OS X v10.4/10.5/10.6)
In addition to the enhancements to the movie function, the accompanying instruction manual has also been revised. Users are asked to download both the latest firmware and the latest instruction manual. Uh-ohs! Canon’s 5D update pulled from e-shelves

Posted by on Thursday, 18 March, 2010

Well, looks like that Canon 5D mk II update that was released a couple days ago has itself a couple faults. Seems that if you set sound recording to manual while using a C* dial setting, then turn the camera off, it’ll render your camera unable to record audio at all. There are two solutions: don’t install the update until they fix it, or set sound recording to auto.

We hope you have found this information informative.

Canon 5D mk II gets 24p video, improved audio in imminent update

Posted by on Monday, 1 March, 2010

Good news for those of you shooting video on your 5D mk IIs — this month will bring the highly-anticipated 2.0.3 update, which improves a number of aspects of this already-excellent camera. A 24p mode has been added, thank god, which I know a ton of people were looking forward to — and 30p has been changed to 29.97 in order to be NTSC-compatible. Audio sampling has been bumped from 44.1KHz to 48KHz, which is nice, I guess. You can also manually control audio levels now.

Lastly, they’ve added a histogram to movie mode, which will be an immense help for shooters. This update comes as rumors of 5D mk IIIs are swirling, as well as stories of EF-mount camcorders. Who knows? At any rate, the 5D just became a lot more viable as a filmmaking tool, though I maintain that the image quality issues pose a real issue to any video pro.
