That USB chainsaw is not real

So that fake USB Chainsaw from the other day is indeed fake. Hence the fakeness. It’s instead an eye-opening ad campaign aimed at educating the public about the wastefulness of printers.

Instead of buying a USB chainsaw, you can download a little program that plays the sound of a chainsaw whenever you print something.

That’s supposed to remind you that paper is made from trees — trees that have to be cut down in order to make paper to go in your printer.

I’m all for going paperless, but I’d rather have an actual USB chainsaw than a program that makes a chainsaw noise the five times per year that I print something. I know it’s wasteful, you know it’s wasteful, and the fact that toner cartridges cost more than what I paid for my laser printer is enough to keep it sitting on my desk doing nothing for the next ten years.

Video: i.Saw USB-powered chainsaw (mm-hmm)

Posted by on Tuesday, 7 July, 2009

Behold the world’s first USB-powered chainsaw. Available now for pre-order from USBChainsaw.com, the i.Saw is the size of a standard computer keyboard and features “zero startup time” while “Patent-pending technology allows for an unparalleled distribution of power.”

The above video shows the chainsaw in action, although you may notice that all of the actual cutting is handled by a quick closeup of chainsaw teeth. Fake? Probably. If it’s not fake, though, it’s a brilliant feat of engineering.

Most signs — no way to actually lay money down for a pre-order, overambitious use of jargon, shady promo video — point to fake, unfortunately. Our resident handyman, Matt Burns, will be disappointed.

I never get tired of spam like this: “Purchase Chainsaws”

With the flood of “Hello my dear” and “YOU ARE WINNER” emails in my inbox every morning, I’m actually beginning to tire of the never-ending variety presented by spam. But it’s mail like this that renews my faith in the bots and non-native speakers variating these strange messages.

The best part is trying to figure out how the scam works; it’s not your usual phishing or Spanish Prisoner scheme. Anyone have any ideas or fun variants of this sort of thing?

I’ll let the E3 boys to their business on this but I thought you might like to see the new Left 4 Dead trailer. It involves zombies and killing.
