Dubbed “Skinemax” by many, the programmer typically has several hours of titillating titles interspersed between big budget Hollywood films during the late night hours. It’s not unusual for shows like Lingerie or Co-Ed Confidential to appear alongside movies like The A-Team after midnight.

The good news for Cinemax subscribers is that — at least for now — they no longer have to wait until late night or early morning to peruse that type of content: The Max Go iPad app includes a very prominently placed “Max After Dark” tab, which makes about a dozen softcore movie titles and another dozen TV series available for viewing anytime on the go. Those movies include titles like The Hills Have Thighs and Bikini Jones and the Temple of Eros.

Apple and CEO Steve Jobs have historically taken a hard line against pornography being available through native iOS apps. In an email exchange with Gawker’s Ryan Tate last year, Jobs said that the iPad would offer users “freedom from porn.” And in a Q&A session after the launch of iOS 4, Jobs told reporters that porn was one reason Apple wouldn’t allow unsigned or unapproved apps onto iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad.

You know, there’s a porn store for Android. You can download nothing but porn. You can download porn, your kids can download porn. That’s a place we don’t want to go – so we’re not going to go there.

Apple has worked hard to enforce that policy, removing applications from its App Store that it considered “overtly sexual,” including those that did little but offer up photos of partial nudity. It’s also kept big name publishers of girly mags from making nude pictorials available on the App Store. Playboy is one example: After publishing an iPad app that didn’t include any nudity, the magazine publisher bypassed the app store altogether with an HTML5 web app that provided access to its library of nude photos.

Cable networks like HBO have never shied away from racy content, and viewers of shows like Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones have almost come to expect full-frontal female nudity and simulated intercourse as part of the story telling. And those shows have been available on the iPad as part of its HBO Go app for months.

But porn is like art: you know it when you see it. Breaking up the action of True Blood with occasional nudity is different than breaking up the nudity of Lust at First Bite with occasional dialogue. And a quick perusal of the Cinemax iPad app proved, to me at least, that’s exactly the type of thing to expect from most all of the “Max After Dark” content. After all, viewers aren’t watching Bikini Frankenstein because they’re interested in the story.

The Max Go app comes with a warning that it contains adult material when you download it, and there are parental controls to ensure that kids aren’t able to access some of the real racy stuff. Even so, it’s not clear how Max Go got approved as a native app after Apple has worked so diligently to remove apps containing partial nudity and kept uncensored apps like Playboy off the App Store. The question is if it will remain on the App Store, softcore porn and all, or if some modified version of the app will need to be released once Apple catches wind of what’s really available in “Max After Dark.”

It’s not a Windows 7 Party without some tunes, right? Thankfully Microsoft has created a set of commercials with catchy beats, nice visuals, and no stilted, low-paid actors apparently preparing to get it on in the worst Cinemax late night movie ever.

It’s nice to see good commercials for Windows 7 itself – that’s important, especially in general adoption – and thankfully they’re not using the same video team that they use for internal, informal videos.

Comcast will open the service to 5,000 beta testers in the coming weeks. I’m just curious about how many more networks will sign up before it launches to everyone. The service already has the most of any online viewing site available with, all the major networks, HBO, Cinemax, Stars, TBS, TNT, and most of the cable stations.

“TV Everywhere” Model

NEW YORK and PHILADELPHIA, July 14, 2009 — CBS Corporation (NYSE:  CBS.A) and Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq:  CMCSA, CMCSK) announced today that CBS is the first broadcast network to participate in Comcast’s technical trial of On Demand Online.  The new service will significantly expand the number of top-rated TV shows available online and across platforms at no additional charge to Comcast’s cable customers while delivering increased advertising value to content owners.  During the course of the trial, CBS plans to test various types of current and library content.

“CBS and Comcast share the same vision of giving consumers more — more content, in more places,” said Matt Bond, Executive Vice President of Content Acquisition, Comcast Cable.  “On Demand Online is a major step in extending consumers’ television experiences online, and ultimately across platforms by giving any television network, including top brands like CBS, the ability to make their content available on the Web.”

“CBS is very supportive of initiatives that help extend our content to new platforms in such a way that we gain new audiences and additional value for our advertisers,” said Quincy Smith, Chief Executive Officer, CBS Interactive. “Comcast is already a trusted platform to distribute CBS content on air as well as on demand; expanding this relationship online is a logical step.  In addition, CBS’s strategy has always been about open, non-exclusive distribution of our content in a consumer friendly way, which is a core tenant of TV Everywhere and On Demand Online.”

CBS’s participation in Comcast’s technical trial comes on the heels of last month’s joint announcement between Time Warner Inc. and Comcast which introduced a set of principles called “TV Everywhere.”  Developed by the two companies, the principles are designed to serve as a framework to facilitate deployment of online television content in a way that is consumer friendly and pro-competitive.

Comcast will begin its technical trial of On Demand Online with approximately 5,000 customers from across the U.S. in the coming weeks – the first national trial of its kind.  A major focus of the trial is to test Comcast’s new “authentication” technology, which will allow Comcast customers to receive the same content online for free that they subscribe to on TV.  The service will utilize a simple log-on system for streaming content and, in the future, will allow for download content to go.  The On Demand Online service will roll-out in phases, adding new features, functionality and content over time to provide consumers with a new way to watch television.

On Demand Online is part of Comcast’s Project Infinity, the company’s long-term vision to give customers an ever growing amount of video content on multiple platforms, whenever they want.

We still have questions about the authentication system and if the service will have an open API that will allow developers to build it into streaming software PlayOn or Boxee. Those details will probably drop later, but if Comcast can continue to add premium content online from the big names, they might be onto something. Now, how about Showtime for some Californication and Weeds action.
