Apple’s New iBooks Won’t School College Bookstores Any Time Soon

On its face, matching iPad textbooks with college students seems almost perfect. But Apple’s plans for its new iBookstore, from the way it’s structured book purchases to its development strategy for multimedia e-books, doesn’t seem like it’s well suited for the college textbook market at all ? if it even has that target in mind.

Take a good look at that lime green hornet pictured above, because it may just herald the dawn of a new era in Ugandan transportation. Known as the Kiira EV, this plug-in was designed by students at Makerere University in Uganda, where electric cars, as you might imagine, are something of a rare commodity. In fact, local media outlets are heralding the Kiira as the first EV ever produced within the central African country, and it’s not too shabby, either. On Tuesday, after nearly three years of development, the two-seater successfully completed its first test run, reaching a top speed of 65 kilometers per hour and nimbly making its way up a 55-degree incline. According to Paul Isaac Musasizi, who oversaw the project, the Kiira is capable of maxing out at a speed of 150 kilometers per hour, and can run for up to 80 kilometers on a single charge. Aside from its steering wheel and other accessories, every other component was designed and constructed domestically.

Perhaps more important than the Kiira EV’s specs, however, is what it symbolizes for Uganda. “When we started the project, we wanted to demonstrate that Uganda has as good talent as that in the US or Germany,” Musasizi told Uganda’s Daily Monitor. “Now that this is over, we expect and want it to be taken up.” It remains to be seen whether the Kiira actually enters production anytime soon, but Musasizi says his team is already working on a 28-seat EV for public transportation, underscoring their commitment to bringing green technology to their country. College in the mobile era: Campus tours via smartphone

Prospective college students are already using their mobile devices to upload Facebook photos, update Twitter, and text their friends. Now, colleges are beginning to use smartphones, too — as recruitment tools. YourCampus 360 is one company using iOS and Android devices as platforms for a full-blown college tour and information business that hones in on the trend of readily available location data and the prevalence of smartphones.

YourCampus 360 already does virtual tours via the web and Facebook of colleges and universities. Recently it began offering mobile apps to help colleges find students wherever they happen to be. Can’t afford to go on a college tour trip? This service is intended to be a replacement for the experience. But prospective students can also use the app to make their in-person tour more interactive. The company mixes GPS with custom maps it builds for each school and creates an app that gives guided mobile tours with audio via an Android and iOS app.

When students arrive on campus at one of the 70 participating schools in the U.S. and Canada, instead of receiving a map or having to take a guided tour, they are invited to download the school’s iTour app on their iOS or Android device. If they don’t have one, some of the schools even provide a loaner device.

As students and their families make their way around campus, they can choose from a variety of tours tailored to the course of study they plan to pursue (for example: tour for athletes, or tour of just the engineering buildings). There are also passive notifications of relevant information based on the device’s location on campus. When a student comes within 20 yards of a building, the app’s audio portion will kick in and begin talking about what happens in that building.

Via the app, a student can “look inside” any building, see photos and video of the interior, see events that took place inside, as well as 360-degree panoramic images of building interiors. According to Abi Mandelbaum, YourCampus 360 CEO, “For each location, a critical component is that when a user looks in, they’ll only see media related to a particular location. The goal is to provide information to the student when they’re looking for it rather than bombarding them.”

From a business perspective, one of the main benefits is that the app “creates multiple touch points between the school and the prospective student,” he added. The hope is that schools will use that connection to stay in touch with students after a visit or a display of interest in applying.

Stony Brook University in New York noticed a 200 percent leap in the number of students accessing its admissions page via iOS devices and last year began offering YourCampus 360’s customized tour iOS app to its prospective students.

“Mobile is where it is if you want to reach out to potential students,” said Stefan Hyman, web and electronic information coordinator for the school’s undergraduate admissions office.

Though the technology schools are using to recruit students has changed dramatically in the past few years, Hyman says the information that students want remains constant. Since they’re searching for that in new ways, it makes perfect sense to meet them there.

The other thing that’s changed is the economy, which is part of the reason Stony Brook was interested in this new mobile student outreach method. “So students have this option of taking a tour online or downloading the app if they don’t have the financial means to come for a physical visit,” Hyman said.

Lending evidence that it might be working is the data they have on who is getting this app. Just in the last three months it’s been downloaded 3,300 times, and not just in and around New York state, but in 28 additional countries.

The statistic the school is focusing on most as a sign of success is the engagement factor. “The average user who’s downloaded this app is running it three times,” noted Hyman. “Thats actually key to us, actually getting students involved with it. It’s not something just downloaded once and never come back to.”

College kids hate textbooks. Can e-books really help?

It’s no secret that most college students aren’t crazy about textbooks. But will moving required reading materials to an e-book format really change all that? A new market research study indicates that it just might.

73 percent of college students who responded to a new Kelton Research study sponsored by education software startup Kno said they’d be willing to do something they might not normally do — including giving up dating or sex — if they could never carry another textbook.

That sounds a bit sensational, but it makes a bit more sense when you think about the financial and physical burden that college textbooks represent: College students can expect to spend some 00 on textbooks during their undergraduate careers, and a quarter of students have to carry in excess of 20 pounds worth of books on a typical day, according to the study.

But would shifting to a digital format really make students fall in love with “books”? The research data implies that it certainly could help. 62 percent of respondents said they would study more often if they could access their textbooks from anywhere without having to carry them around, and 54 percent said it would make their studies more efficient. A full 71 percent of college students said they were keen to “go digital” by putting required reading materials on a mobile or desktop application or through the web.

Even so, many educational software companies have not taken off as quickly as many may have hoped. Kno itself was forced to pivot earlier this year after a number of launch-related hiccups. But now that college students are want to go digital more than ever, the tide may finally start to turn away from traditional textbooks for good.
