Bulldozer world record re-broken by Andre Yang with a 8.58GHz victory lap

Posted by on Friday, 4 November, 2011
There you have it, folks. Floating over this text is the CPU-Z record that proves it: four days after Andre Yang broke the chip speed overclocking record with AMD’s Bulldozer, he’s done it again. The chip maker was eerily prescient when it said it expected others to beat the record and that unnatural confidence in the silicon has paid off. Last time, Yang managed to push only 30MHz over the previous record, this time he’s found a further 123.3MHz — making the total chip speed 8.58GHz. The secret to his success was in increasing his chip voltage (2.076v compared to 1.992 last time) and over-liberal use of liquid nitrogen. Maybe he could convince Sunnyvale to loan him a massive vat of liquid helium to get ever closer to the goal of 9GHz — just make sure you don’t pick up the check for the shipping and handling, okay?

Confidence In Dance

Posted by on Friday, 27 May, 2011

You must look confident when you dance, but that doesn’t mean you really are!! Even if you’re quaking in your dancing shoes, LOOK confident and your audience will be impressed.

The thing is, the audience wasn’t at the rehearsals. They don’t know what the routine was supposed to be, so they won’t spot a mistake unless you make it obvious by frowning – or stopping!

If you can maintain a look of confidence, smiling brightly no matter what craziness is happening lower down, the audience will probably never notice you goofed.

Almost everyone is nervous before a show, it can’t be avoided. Learn to display confidence every time you dance, even in dance classes, and it will become a natural part of your dancing. A word of warning – if you dance with poise and confidence in class, some students will call you a show-off. Those students want you to giggle when you make a mistake and fluff your final poses.

You have to decide what’s more important – fitting in with the others, or becoming a real dancer who gives great performances? If you dance like that in class, you won’t easily shift a gear once you’re on stage. Serious dancers will always try to dance in class as they would on stage (unless they’re conserving their energy for a later performance).

My teacher was adamant that we must pretend we were performing at all times. I found that to be excellent advice – although it has got me into trouble! When I started performing flamenco, audience members often assumed I was the troupe leader instead of my teacher. I knew that wasn’t true – my teacher was a far better dancer. The difference was, I was taught to dance confidently, whereas she was rather shy and tended to dance with her eyes downcast. So when we danced together, I grabbed the audience’s attention. They never noticed that my feet were not as precise or my hand movements less graceful – all they could see were my smile, my posture, and my ‘attack’ and enthusiasm.

Of course, it’s also important to rehearse, so you don’t have to worry about your steps. But that’s not the biggest contributor to your ‘confidence score’!

Could “Cloud” Become a Dirty Word for Consumers?

Posted by on Sunday, 1 May, 2011

Let me first get this out of the way: I know the term “cloud” is overused, and systems like Amazon Web Services are vastly different than so-called “consumer-cloud” services like Gmail and Amazon’s Cloud Drive.

But with all the bad news about recent outages from Amazon, the high-profile consumer data breaches like that from the Sony’s Playstation Network and continuing disruptions to services like  Tumblr, it’s time to ask: Could consumers start to lose confidence in the cloud?

While there’s no real hard data today about whether consumers are losing confidence in the cloud — other than possibly looking at trending of search terms about major outages — I have to wonder if the continuing string of outages, breaches and overall high-profile downtime is starting to tarnish the larger cloud brand. After all, chances are, at some point most consumers have been affected, either by downtime to a favorite service or something more serious like a data loss or (God forbid) their personal data compromised; at some point, those users might start to distrust this fuzzy concept they think of as cloud.

Part of the problem here is one of education. It’s difficult in the consumer world, where many have a nodding acquaintance with technology but no real hard understanding, to explain why the evolution of web architecture is better off with such things as Amazon Web Services. Most don’t have time to really grasp these finer points, nor would the technology world expect them to.

And that’s why the cloud could ultimately experience a branding issue.

Right now, the cloud brand is still probably strong and still, despite the spate of bad news, holds a certain cachet. At the same time, however, the noise around high-profile cloud outages, breaches and failure has been getting steadily louder, reason enough for the industry to collectively take notice and, perhaps, collectively take action before the word “cloud” becomes a dirty one.

So what should it do? First off, I think many of the services that experience problems — the recent Gmail and Netflix outages come to mind — would benefit from faster and more transparent communication of the problem. Often, hours or days go by without any real communication of what is going on, leaving many wondering what exactly the extent of the problem will be. If there’s anything to be learned from politics, it’s to get ahead of the problem by communicating early and often.

But perhaps more important, the industry could collectively communicate how they’ll protect consumers from these types of problems in the future, either through concrete steps they lay out, or issuing a series of best practices that consumer cloud services could follow.

What would this collective look like? Hard to say. Possibly working within existing groups such as the Open Cloud Consortium, who offers reference architectures, but could also incorporate best practices for web-services companies around outward-facing communication. The same companies could also create a consumer-facing group that could explain the benefits of cloud computing vis-a-vis other technologies as well as provide consumer “best practices” (such as back-up).

Clearly, it’s not an easy issue to tackle, but it is one that needs attention. With new services being launched almost daily, it’s time for the industry to act before “cloud” becomes a dirty word in the mind of the consumer.

Strum Patterns For Guitar – Down Up Right Or Left?

Posted by on Thursday, 24 March, 2011

It is usually a great thing to see or watch one of your favorite players playing an awesome lick or an awesome solo. Not only it fits perfectly within the melody or chord progression, but they make it look very easy and straightforward! All the energy goes into terrific moves and abnormal facial expressions. Many reasons lead to this. First, they composed the solo. Sounds clear but when you write something yourself it is usually easier to play, compared to figuring out somebody else’s stuff.

Secondly, they have figured out appropriate co-ordination between the left and right hand. This enables them to shift their focus on to other areas of their playing, like tone, fluency and you’ve guessed it… amazing rock moves!

This can be done by a great deal of practice, but also by the indisputable fact that at some point the player will certainly have understood and figured out the best way to position and move his hands to make everything easy to play. And you know what? Most of the time when a person makes it appear simple, it commonly is simpler for them to perform. Likewise it’s particularly discouraging while you’re wishing to play that exact same lick and you just can’t work it out.

It’s only normal to think that when soloing, a lot of the work is carried out with the left hand. That is why, one point that many people struggle with at first is the movement of the right hand. The truth is though, when you fully learn the movement of the right hand you will no longer feel the need to take a look over to your right, to ensure everything’s okay. You will have confidence in your right hand, that way you will be fully able to concentrate on your left hand and make anything you play look and sound comfortable.

So while not being obvious, knowing strum patterns for guitar and thereby learning the best way to control, position and move your right hand might just be what you require to be a rock star….aside from rock moves that is!

How Horse Racing Bets Work

Posted by on Saturday, 12 March, 2011

A lot of folks would love to bet on horse racing, but haven’t a clue about how to get started. As a matter of fact, all of the horse race betting tips you’ll need to get started are right here in this article. Just remember that the tips you’re reading are aimed at horse racing in North America and not really for the rest of the world. Still, some of the basic tenets of smart betting apply to all types of gambling, not just horse racing. Okay then, let’s get to the races!

Types Of Bets

The first and perhaps most important thing to know how to do is how to make a wager. On top of that, it’s important to know the various types of bets that can be made. And, of course, in order for you to collect any winnings, you’ll have to bet on a horse that actually wins a race. You can even bet for a horse to place in a race should you not be entirely confident in its ability to win the race. Betting on a horse to place is an attractive idea because it’s a smaller bet but remember that it will also result in a lower payout should that horse ultimately place. This is because horses obviously have a better chance of placing than of winning. Another type of bet is called a show bet. This type of bet allows you to win whether the horse places or wins. Of course, because the odds are even higher that your horse will either win or place first, second or third, not only is the cost of the bet lower, so too is the payout. There is nothing wrong with placing either of these types of bets and it all depends on your confidence in the horse. Sometimes, it’s just fun to gamble as an activity and not as a means of making money or assuming risk. There are also more advanced bets like exactas or daily doubles, but these are extremely tough to win and are not for novice horse racing gamblers.

Don’t Bet More Than You Can Lose

Never betting more than you’re willing to lose on a single bet; that’s perhaps one of the most important tenets of horse racing wagers and of gambling in general. The danger of any type of gambling like horse race betting is that a horse or a particular bet can have such a high potential for payout that it might feel worth the risk to wager it all. That’s precisely why smart gamblers only leave home with the money that they can lose without adversely affecting their overall quality of life.
