Samsung Galaxy Note to ring Canada’s Bell? The Android Market says so

Posted by on Monday, 9 January, 2012

Sammy’s not a phone, not yet a tablet Galaxy Note has been stirring up its own excitement pre-CES, with certain accessory partners inadvertently slipping news of an AT&T bow. While we’ve just gotten confirmation that its US debut will indeed pan out, it appears our neighbors to the north might also be getting their maple-soaked mitts on this stylus-equipped monster. As you can see in the Android Market screenshot above, an unlocked version of the handset is denoted (hardy har!) as the Bell Samsung GT-N7000. Does this herald an impending device announcement for the network? Hard to tell, as it could all very well just be a simple system error. But with the recent expansion of that Canadian carrier’s 4G footprint, the Note would undoubtedly make for a very attractive LTE lure.

[Thanks, Ramen]

Fujifilm X-Pro1 lenses get Amazon product pages, prices

Posted by on Sunday, 8 January, 2012

Well, that didn’t take long. Just yesterday, Wells Fargo Advisors reportedly outed the Fujifilm X-Pro1, a possible successor to the X100 — today, Amazon’s thrown up a trio of product pages for the shooter’s leaked lenses. The product descriptions match the previous rumors to a tee, pricing the 18mm (27mm equivalent) f/2.0 and 35mm (53mm equivalent) f/1.4 lens at 0, and the larger 60mm (90mm equivalent) f/2 lens priced at 0. Confirmation? Not exactly, but we’ll find out soon enough — Fuijifilm takes these stage on January 9th.

Ice Cream Sandwich coming to Meizu M9, MX, Jack Wong confirms

Posted by on Thursday, 3 November, 2011

Ice Cream Sandwich continues to march its way across the market. Next stop? The Meizu M9 and MX. Confirmation came earlier this week by way of Meizu CEO Jack Wong, who nonchalantly mentioned the forthcoming update on his company’s forum. Affirming that the MX’s December “release date remains unchanged,” Wong went on to say that both the MX and M9 “will upgrade to [Android] 4.0 as soon as possible.” No further specifics were offered, though the exec did explain the MX’s delayed release, attributing it to his company’s ongoing efforts to incorporate a sharper, back-illuminated camera within the handset. Rest assured, we’ll keep you up to date with the very latest.

Pageonce aspires to be a digital wallet with mobile bill pay

Posted by on Monday, 24 October, 2011

Pageonce was one of the first iPhone apps and built a following of more than 5 million users as a mobile financial service letting people track their bills from their smartphones. But the service has been missing one big thing until today: mobile bill pay.

Now, Palo Alto, CA-based Pageonce is adding the feature, helping the app fulfill its aspirations to become more of a digital wallet for users. But that comes at a price: .99 a month for the bill pay service on Pageonce’s iPhone and Android apps.

With Pageonce, users will now be able to view credit card, utility, cell phone, rent and other bills and easily pay them from the app using various funding sources. Users can pay from bank accounts or credit cards, decide how much they want to pay and then get a confirmation for the transaction.

Pageonce is betting that people will be willing to pay for the convenience of settling all their bills from one app. Currently, almost half of consumers pay their bills in person or by mail and a quarter of payments are made at the individual sites of billers, said Steve Schultz, chief operating officer at Pageonce. He said providing a one-stop resource should prove appealing to consumers, especially the ability to pay not just from one bank account, which many banking apps allow, but also from multiple banking accounts and credit cards. Schultz said Pageonce is also unique in that it provides a much fuller look at bills through a mobile app so users can get more information on their charges before deciding to pay.

“We think it’s time to take the app to the next level and really enable people to do their finances, not just view them from a phone,” Schultz said. “Most people think of bill pay as a chore. Here you can pay it on the fly on public transit or on your down time. The goal is to make bill pay less stressful so people can move on with rest of their lives.”

Pageonce has done a lot of work on the back end to enable mobile bill payments and has also worked on security to ensure payments are safe and meets bank requirements. Users can lock their app with a PIN, designate access from only one mobile device and block mobile access from the web if a device is stolen or lost.

I’m not sure how popular the .99 fee will be with users, who are already getting hit up for more fees from banks. But Schultz said Pageonce will tinker with the pricing to see what’s popular. He said 1,000 users participated in a beta and 96 percent of users surveyed said they wanted mobile bill pay. And, 34 percent said they were willing to pay to monthly for the service.

If Pageonce can get mobile bill pay right, it will be another sign of momentum for the service, which competes against Mint and newer competitor Manilla. The company has raised million including million in May led by Morgenthaler Ventures. And it will show that more mobile centric services can thrive by providing valuable tools to mobile users.

Sprint will offer unlimited data plan for the iPhone 4S

Posted by on Wednesday, 5 October, 2011
A Sprint spokesperson gave us a ring to let us know that the newly announced iPhone 4S will be eligible for the carrier’s unlimited data plan. According to Sprint, pricing will start at .99 for unlimited data and 450 talk minutes, with the Simply Everything unlimited calling and data running you .99. At the very least, the company’s confirmation that the plan is sticking around will help the third US carrier to nab the iPhone stand out among its predecessors. We’ll add some PR as soon as it hits.

Archos sends the A70S2 tablet through the FCC, tells us nothing in the process

Posted by on Monday, 11 July, 2011

You’d think after unveiling a duo of Android 3.1 slates along with a bare-bones model Archos would have washed its hands of tablets for at least a couple months, right? Of course not — the French company that just won’t quit has sent yet another tab through the FCC, this one dubbed the A70S2. And that’s about all the outfit let slip on the subject — at least until August 19th when the confidentiality protection covering the tablet’s juiciest details expires. The company wouldn’t throw us a screen size, resolution, or even a confirmation that yes, this thing might well run Android like the bulk of Archos’ other tablets. So if this game of “what the heck is this?” doesn’t bear fruit, let’s take the opportunity to have a (one-sided) heart-to-heart with our favorite French tablet maker. Archos, isn’t it about time you added an easy-to-hold, 7-incher with Android 3.1, 250GB of storage, and HDMI-out to the mix? We think it’d fit in perfectly.
