Dwolla gives immediate access to cash with Instant feature

Posted by on Thursday, 15 December, 2011

Dwolla, an alternative payment system built off cash networks, has quietly been on a roll in its first year, hitting  million in daily transactions in July. Two weeks ago, the Des Moines, IA start-up eliminated fees on transactions for less than , another big step in its bid to replace credit cards.

Now the company is celebrating its first year on the market by introducing a new feature called Instant that addresses one of the lingering pain points in the system: the three to five day delay users face when accessing cash. With Instant, users can deposit money and send cash without the existing wait time built into Dwolla. It will cost users a month to access Instant, a charge that can be opted out of at any time if users aren’t actively using the feature. Users can also have Dwolla pay for an item immediately, up to 0, as long as they pay back the cost within a month. There’s a late fee if people don’t bring their remaining instant balance to by the statement date. But the Instant features gives users flexibility to pay for items immediately, like they do with a credit card and yet not incur big charges.

The idea is that Dwolla is trying to eliminate any barriers to people accessing its network. It’s still going with its main selling point: a 25 cents fee for each transaction over . Users can load up a Dwolla balance or connect their account to a bank account. Dwolla still ensures the same type of security by not transferring personal data with each transaction. Dwolla users can pay friends using the system over social networks or pay for goods online or in store.

The Dwolla system is especially attractive to merchants because it caps the amount of fees they pay for transactions. It’s much cheaper than credit card companies, which can take 2-3 percent and 30 cents for each card transaction. This is especially important for businesses that receive larger payments. The feature works online, and will be coming to iOS and Androiddevices soon.

Dwolla CEO Ben Milne

Dwolla still has a ways to go to gain traction and compete with companies like Square, PayPal and the traditional credit card companies. It has about 70,000 users right now, and several thousand merchants using the system. But it’s catching on with business and consumers who approach this next generation approach to payments.

Dwolla CEO Ben Milne told me that the moves are part of an effort to improve the Dwolla architecture, making it faster, easier to use and safe. He said the big opportunity is in being an alternative to ACH payments, which is a trillion market. So far, 89 percent of the transactions are between businesses and consumers with the average transaction more than 0 to 0.

Milne admits the company has a lot to do to get the word out. But he insists being in the midwest has not hurt Dwolla. In fact, being outside of the finance capital of New York or the tech center of San Francisco has allowed it to understand what the average user wants in a new payment system. Now with Instant, Milne hopes Dwolla is at a turning point as it sharpens its message and value proposition for consumers and merchants.

Pageonce aspires to be a digital wallet with mobile bill pay

Posted by on Monday, 24 October, 2011

Pageonce was one of the first iPhone apps and built a following of more than 5 million users as a mobile financial service letting people track their bills from their smartphones. But the service has been missing one big thing until today: mobile bill pay.

Now, Palo Alto, CA-based Pageonce is adding the feature, helping the app fulfill its aspirations to become more of a digital wallet for users. But that comes at a price: .99 a month for the bill pay service on Pageonce’s iPhone and Android apps.

With Pageonce, users will now be able to view credit card, utility, cell phone, rent and other bills and easily pay them from the app using various funding sources. Users can pay from bank accounts or credit cards, decide how much they want to pay and then get a confirmation for the transaction.

Pageonce is betting that people will be willing to pay for the convenience of settling all their bills from one app. Currently, almost half of consumers pay their bills in person or by mail and a quarter of payments are made at the individual sites of billers, said Steve Schultz, chief operating officer at Pageonce. He said providing a one-stop resource should prove appealing to consumers, especially the ability to pay not just from one bank account, which many banking apps allow, but also from multiple banking accounts and credit cards. Schultz said Pageonce is also unique in that it provides a much fuller look at bills through a mobile app so users can get more information on their charges before deciding to pay.

“We think it’s time to take the app to the next level and really enable people to do their finances, not just view them from a phone,” Schultz said. “Most people think of bill pay as a chore. Here you can pay it on the fly on public transit or on your down time. The goal is to make bill pay less stressful so people can move on with rest of their lives.”

Pageonce has done a lot of work on the back end to enable mobile bill payments and has also worked on security to ensure payments are safe and meets bank requirements. Users can lock their app with a PIN, designate access from only one mobile device and block mobile access from the web if a device is stolen or lost.

I’m not sure how popular the .99 fee will be with users, who are already getting hit up for more fees from banks. But Schultz said Pageonce will tinker with the pricing to see what’s popular. He said 1,000 users participated in a beta and 96 percent of users surveyed said they wanted mobile bill pay. And, 34 percent said they were willing to pay to monthly for the service.

If Pageonce can get mobile bill pay right, it will be another sign of momentum for the service, which competes against Mint and newer competitor Manilla. The company has raised million including million in May led by Morgenthaler Ventures. And it will show that more mobile centric services can thrive by providing valuable tools to mobile users.

iPhone 4 gets upgraded for NFC payments the hard way

Posted by on Friday, 29 July, 2011

Softbank customers in Japan can simply get an NFC sticker to add some contact-less payments to their iPhone 4, but most folks don’t have it quite so easy just yet. There are some alternatives while you wait for Apple to hop on the NFC bandwagon, however, like this solution from Unplggd‘s Vivian Kim. It uses one of the smaller NFC-equipped credit cards now available from some banks, which is apparently just small enough to fit under the back cover of an iPhone 4 (a clear one, in this case, to show off your cleverness). And, yes, it apparently still works just fine under there — even if you add a case on top of it.

Mobile payments worth $670 billion by 2015

Posted by on Tuesday, 5 July, 2011

Mobile payments have taken off in the last few years, and are now poised to grow from 0 billion this year to 0 billion worldwide in 2015, according to Juniper Research. Fueled in part by the nascent near field communication (NFC) market, which is expected to be worth billion by 2014, the overall mobile payments market is also expected to rise quickly thanks to mobile ticketing, money transfers and purchases of physical goods.

Mobile payments are more reliant right now on digital goods purchases, which is expected to double by 2015 and will account for 40 percent of the market. But the faster growth will occur with NFC, which can be used in retail and merchant locations to buy physical items. Juniper said 20 countries are expected to launch NFC services in the next 18 months.

Developing countries may also help drive mobile payment growth. Markets that don’t rely as much on traditional credit cards and banks are ripe for new payment options. Remittances and money transfers can also be big in emerging nations. Juniper believes mobile payments in developing countries will double by 2013. However, the more mature markets of east Asia and China, western Europe and North America will represent 75 percent of mobile payment transaction value by 2015.

Forrester reported a few weeks ago that mobile payments will hit billion in the U.S. by 2016. While it’s a decent annual growth rate of 39 percent between 2011 and 2016, it’s a more measured forecast compared to what Juniper’s predicting. Forrester believes that mobile commerce will still get going but at a slower pace as companies struggle to understand their mobile investments and how to integrate mobile into their sales operations.

I think the two research firms highlight the two sides of mobile payments. There’s paying for (often digital) goods online using a mobile phone, and then there’s the opportunity to use a phone as a real world wallet replacement. Though online commerce is where things have been most active in the mobile world, the real opportunity is to get into offline payments in the physical world. That is still an emerging market, but if companies like Square, PayPal, Google, and a host of others are successful in convincing people to embrace mobile payments in stores, we could see them really take off.

Is it worth 0 billion? It’s looking more and more plausible. We reported last year that mobile payments was expected to bring in 3 billion by 2014. That’s a tall order, but as PayPal pointed out recently, it’s now expecting to process billion in mobile payments this year, up from its billion forecast in April. Square in May pushed past million processed per day and it’s growing fast. The U.S. still lags behind in mobile payments compared to Asia. NFC still needs to mature here, and consumers and merchants need to be convinced the tech is worth the risk and investment. But things are starting to heat up, and these pie-in-the-sky forecasts are looking more attainable every day.
