Windows 8 on a laptop in-depth preview (video)

Posted by on Friday, 16 September, 2011

Less than 24 hours after it went live on Microsoft’s site, Steve Ballmer reported a whopping 500,000 downloads of Windows 8 Developer Preview. That’s half a million copies, if not eager Windows fans. Well, you can count us among them. Although we were treated to some private hands-on time with a tablet optimized for the OS, we hadn’t, until now, had a chance to use it on a laptop — i.e., the computing environment where we spend most of our time, and the one where we’re most used to seeing Windows, in particular.

For the past three days, we’ve been doing just that: getting acquainted with Windows 8 using the good ‘ol mouse-and-keyboard combo. And while that might read like a redundant statement (what recent version of Windows hasn’t accommodated a cursor?), Win 8 is a peculiar breed — It’s the first version of the operating system where finger input wasn’t an afterthought, but a first-class citizen. It’s clear that this time around, Windows is optimized for touch, but we had to wonder if that Windows Phone-inspired UI would present a steep learning curve, if it would get in the way while we tried to go about business as usual. So how’s that working out for us? Suffice to say, we’re not in Kansas anymore, so find your most comfortable chair and meet us after the break — we’ve got oh-so many details to delve into.

How to protect the computer from attacks of hackers

There are many various malefactors in the Internet. Some of them try to “dissolve” you, promising a freebie, offering the doubtful goods and services, forcing you to click references of the doubtful maintenance. We can meet similar ways quite often in a real life too. That is why ways of struggle against them are the same as in a real life – not to be got involved in the doubtful enterprises and to avoid them.

The matter with so-called hackers is more difficult. Generally, I want to write about someone who does not exactly fir to this definition, but for simplicity of perception I will use this word to talk about those who, using various computer technologies, harm your computer or steals from it the important information.

Usually when a person has learned to program something, especially at young age, he/she longs for feats. Such hackers are called “hackers-jokers”. They write some harmful program on purpose to ego-trip and take a fun. Depending on forwardness of the virus of the writer this program can be simple a joke, for example, the cursor of your mouse can disappear from the screen or something more serious can happen.

Once I have met such kind of virus. After reboot of the computer the words “Let’s play poker” have appeared on the screen. I have played it and have lost, and other words have jumped out – “You have lost. Let you Windows pay for your loss”. I have apprehended it as a joke, but the virus hasn’t been joking also I has paid wholly for this loss.

It happens that hackers transfer you an invisible program which simply destroys yours Windows, or makes so that work with system is impossible. I have thought that hackers of such programs are also jokers. However, black humor is also humor.

There is a second category of such people – so-called “hackers-Mafiosis”. If you consider that there is nothing to steal from your computer, and you will not become a victim of hackers of the Mafiosi you are mistaken. Your computer can be used for a spam sending or realization of hacker attacks as gun meat.

How to protect yourself from hackers:

- Do not trust any spam. The majority of worms extend through e-mail, to be exact, through a spam. I recommend you to delete all spam messages, without reading its detail. And to download the files attached by spamers – this is a top of nonsense.

- Download anything only from known checked sites.

- Update the software. Quite often hackers use holes in any browsers or offices. Not without holes our favorite Windows is. There are users who do not very much care of downloading of innovations and hackers successfully use them for their attacks.

- Also your computer can be attacked without use of the above described programs but directly through the Internet. The hacker will get on your computer and will make necessary actions. Do not visit doubtful sites. Very often sites with the doubtful maintenance such as free porno sites and sites with a freebie conceal in a code of the pages a worm which with pleasure will flow to your computer. Recently various searchers, for example google, warn about such danger for your computer.

Be cautious with everything that gets on your computer.

Some Laptop Accoutrements For Every Kind of Computer Users

Posted by on Sunday, 4 July, 2010

The search for more doesn’t end with just buying a laptop. Your laptop may have most of your requirements covered, but it certainly needs more gadgets most of the time. What you need are accessories that would help you increase your productivity as you continue using your laptop. These accessories help you explore the features of your laptop and know what it is really capable of.

However, there are so many gadgets out there and sometimes it’s hard to point out which ones are exactly what we need. You can find a huge number of choices like pink laptop bags, personalized computer accessories, or even Hello Kitty laptops for sale. If you feel a little overwhelmed with the process, then perhaps you will benefit from these tips on buying the right accessories.

First, look for a gadget that would help you have easy navigation. What kind of gadget would it be? The kind that will help you to easily browse through the main features of your laptop. You have your laptop’s keyboard and touchpad to help you with that, but sometimes having a mouse will give you better control over the cursor or the pointer. This mouse will give you better access to icons and files that you need to click on. Its right hand and left hand click also make it easy for you to execute commands rather than using your touch pad for that. So as you can see, having a mouse will definitely make it easier for you to use your new laptop.

One laptop accessory that you will be needing as you continue to use your laptop is a gadget where you can put your files on. Extra disk space is needed so that you will have more place to save all of your files. These laptop accessories are available in two forms. You have the thumb drive and you also have the external hard drive. If you have a limited number of files to store and most of them are temporary, then a thumb drive is just right for you. There are lots of designs, sizes and amount of disk space to choose from. However, if you think you will need a bigger disk space than what most thumb drives have, then you will need an external hard drive for saving all of your files. The good thing about this is that it has up to 4 terabytes of available space in it. A wide selection of brands and designs are available in the market right now. It is lightweight and is very portable so you can carry it around with you at all times.

Another very important laptop accessory is a carrying case or a bag. A laptop case or bag will definitely help you carry your laptop just about anywhere as well as a case where you can keep your cables plus other gadgets and accessories. Can you imagine yourself carrying your laptop and its cables and wires under the crook of your arm? The chances of dropping it to the ground or gather dust is very likely. To have maximum protection and to preserve your laptop, you will definitely need a laptop case or bag to do so. The good thing about this is that there are many brands that manufacture different kinds of laptop bags. Some are backpacks, others are shoulder bags and for those fashionable folks, there are pretty handbags that almost look like purses. Just make sure to check out the quality of the laptop bag you need to buy. Immediately look for those with thicker insulation to effectively protect your laptop.
