Knowles Electronics Mems Joystick for Samsung Galaxy Tab, Nintendo 3DS hands-on (video)

Posted by on Friday, 7 October, 2011

With gaming on tablets, the visual experience is often top-notch, but the controls are unfamiliar at best — even inadequate at times. But adding a traditional joystick is impractical, especially when aesthetics is a key selling point for manufacturers. Chicago-based Knowles Electronics has a fairly practical solution, however, and hopes that some manufacturers will adopt its Mems Joystick. At just 1.6mm tall, the joystick is slim enough for a device to maintain a svelte profile, and the 400 microamps it consumes during normal operation is relatively negligible, according to company reps. Tablets are just the start — Knowles built a series of prototypes to demonstrate a variety of potential applications.

We took the joystick for a spin on a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, Motorola Atrix, Nintendo 3DS and a pair of laptops. All of the joystick prototypes connected using Bluetooth or USB, and were designed specifically for this CEATEC demonstration — sadly they won’t be available for purchase, though manufacturers could implement the controller into similar products. It took only a few seconds to get accustomed to the pair of joysticks mounted to the back of the Tab. Controlling gameplay felt natural, and we definitely preferred playing with a clear view of the display. We also navigated through Google Maps, and scrolled a web page — both experiences felt superior to moving around the touchscreen. The 3DS joystick functioned similarly to the native controller included with that device, though Knowles reps noted that it’s significantly smaller, and uses less power — and without compromise, it seems.

Jump past the break for a walkthrough of the devices we saw today, but try not to fall in love — you won’t be able to use the Joystick anytime soon, if manufacturers decide to implement them at all.

Researcher hacks wireless insulin pump to push lethal doses, gives diabetics nightmares

Wireless insulin attack

Thought the demonstration of a Subaru Outback (the official car of suburban weekend warriors) being unlocked and started via text message was terrifying? Wait till you see what researcher and diabetic Jay Radcliffe cooked up for the Black Hat Technical Security Conference. Radcliffe figured out how to hack an insulin pump connected to a wireless glucose monitor and deliver lethal doses of the sugar-regulating hormone. While perhaps less dramatic than shocking a person to death with their own pacemaker, quietly causing an insulin overdose is no less effective at bringing a life to a premature end. The most worrisome part, with a powerful enough antenna a hacker to launch such an attack from up to half a mile away — sleep tight everybody!

Tokyo researchers hijack your hand, help you play the koto (video)

Posted by on Sunday, 26 June, 2011

Researchers over in the land of the robot-obsessed have found a new, non-invasive way to control your hand while your brain recoils in horror. Reassuringly named the PossessedHand, this belt of electro-stimulation wraps its pad of twenty-eight electrodes around your forearm triggering a range of sixteen bewitched joint actions. Project leader Emi Tamaki claims it feels more like a light massage than say, a full-on Freejack. However, one test subject confessed, “[It was] like my body was hacked” — so that’s comforting. This joint production between the University of Tokyo’s Rekimoto Lab and Sony Computer Science Laboratories was first tested as a musical training aide, but could someday help stroke victims regain mobility. For now, the stimulation isn’t strong enough to turn you into an automated Steve Vai (or secret assassin), but it definitely lends new meaning to ‘hands-off.’ Check the video after the break for a demonstration and some unsettling narration.

T-Mobile Ready to Rival Verizon’s LTE Network

Posted by on Tuesday, 24 May, 2011

The fourth largest carrier in the U.S. is set to offer the fastest mobile broadband speeds yet: T-Mobile today announced that 55 markets now have access to the operator’s 42 Mbps network. The first device equipped to use the fast mobile broadband, a USB data stick called the Rocket 3.0, launches tomorrow for after mail-in rebate and with a 2-year data plan commitment. T-Mobile will also sell the Rocket 3.0 off-contract for 9. Post-paid data plans will start at per month and T-Mobile voice customers receive a 20 percent discount on monthly mobile data pricing.

How will T-Mobile’s improved HSPA+ network rival Verizon’s LTE offering, which launched in December of last year? While I haven’t tested T-Mobile’s 42 Mbps network, I did attend a demonstration of it at January’s Consumer Electronics Show. We’ll have to see a real-world scenario of course, but the demonstration showed consistent download speeds topping 28 Mbps. I have used Verizon’s LTE network on several occasions over the past six months – most recently with an LTE-capable MiFi — and haven’t seen such speeds offered by Verizon.

While the potential performance bodes well for T-Mobile, which says 150 million people will have access to improved network speeds by mid-year, there are two questions that come to mind. First is the matter of AT&T’s plan to purchase T-Mobile because today’s news complicates matters even more. AT&T hopes to use T-Mobile’s 1700 MHz spectrum to roll out an LTE network. That makes sense on paper, but the reality is: what if that initial LTE network is actually slower than the updated 42 Mbps network T-Mobile is currently offering? LTE speeds can theoretically be faster than this, but among the major carriers, AT&T is the slowest in making its network faster.

The bigger question revolves around the pricing plans that T-Mobile currently offers customer; yesterday, the carrier revamped voice, text and data plans, for example. All of the data aspects are unlimited with an asterisk, meaning that customers are buying a set amount of data that will be provided at high speeds, but beyond that amount, speeds will be slowed. That seems counter-intuitive for a network product that is differentiating itself on speed alone. And the problem may become even more evident with the new 42 Mbps network. The faster a mobile broadband connection is, the more a consumer is likely to use it, so the amount of high-speed data offered in a plan gets used up that much faster.

Put another way, if the fast network becomes a slow network on the last week of every month, no asterisk in the world is going to make for happy customers on what might currently be the fastest mobile broadband network in the U.S.

Users find this Optoma ES526 quite simple to startup and also above all are really amazed by the quality from the screen appearance.

The image clarity, the colour vitality along with contrast tend to be amazing not to mention that will definitely not change even when you maximize the exact distance towards the actual presenter screen.

An user screen might be reached in this Optoma ES526 itself or even by the actual contained handheld remote control. Anyway it all is user-friendly and also straightforward, exactly like all the keystone modification.

Also right after the projector lamp is deterred the electricity is not entirely shut off as the internal cooling fan cools down the Optoma ES526, the actual projector lamp in particular. Remember to hold off until all the lights on the top part shut off.

Yet another advantage is definitely that that Optoma ES526 comes having two leads, British and Euro attaches. This is not simply immensely useful but also likewise crucial for any portable projector built to match company travel necessities.

Regarding a contra – truth be told there is usually a minimum of just one in every unit, a included speaker inside the projector may be not very effective as well as really quiet in addition to pretty tinny with regard to quality. It again would probably do all the job if anything else fails yet it is not proposed to make use of that integrated speaker when this might be prevented. Music is simply definitely not just what mobile projectors are about. But, combine that Optoma ES526 together with a reasonable speaker and then become set to victory.
