As revolutionary as the mobile ecosystem is, it’s the interactions of more intelligent connected devices with people outside of the context of phones or computers that will drive more innovation, says Mark Rolston, chief creative officer at Frog Design. Rolston, speaking at the Mobile Future Forward conference Monday in Seattle described a future where devices become more contextually aware thanks to embedded and connected sensors.

Instead of thinking about the buttons on a phone or a laptop, manufacturers and designers need to think about what will happen when computers are embedded in everything and connected all the time. Instead of computing confined in a box on a desk or in the hand, computers will be everywhere pulling data from a variety of places. Understanding how those computers will pull information about their environment, relay that data to users and then interpret what users want them to do creates a web of interaction that will require new ways of thinking and design.

In fact, user interaction might be a very minimal part of the overall design. For example, Rolston described a wearable glucose monitor that has elements embedded in the body, a monitor interpreting the data from the user’s bloodstream and a wearable screen for the patient to interact with. Of those three elements the patient input screen is likely gathering the least important information and must convey complicated information simply.

In a conversation after his panel, Rolston explained the challenges inherent in designing interfaces in such a world will come from devices trying to understand a user’s intent, as we build out new ways to interact with them, such as motion. How will a machine know when someone waving their hands while they talk to a friend becomes someone trying to tell a computer to do something? Of course, when a device can watch us and interpret our movements and commands effectively it essentially gives computers the illusion of humanity. That’s the illusion Rolston apparently is trying to create.

Oh hey, fun party, right? Yeah, me too. Jane? No I’m not friends with Jane. Which one is she, the lazy eye? No, like, not in a mean way. Pass the dip? Who’s Dan? Oh, right, no, I don’t know anyone here, I just heard the Simply Red when I was walking by and thought hey, these people know. how. to. par. tay. Pass the chips? It’s also just cool that like this many weirdly proportioned people can all hang out together and everybody’s cool about it. Pass that other dip? Anyway, name’s Kyle. I’ll spare you the embarrassment of asking for my number; it’s been flashing in blinding LED across my t-shirt this whole time. -BB

In order to survive in todays work a day world one needs to have a a fundamental understanding of computer ergonomics. Of all the factors involved in computer ergonomics a comfortable chair is the center. Comfortable chairs come in all price ranges and just because it is expensive doesn’t necessarily mean that it is the most comfortable for you, though it is a factor.

You could go all out and get a Miller Chair or one made by Steelcase or you could try out some other brands and find one that is comfortable when you sit in it. They may not be as comfortable as the ones featured in the video below but it should be something you would find comfortable and adjustable for a long workday.

The chair may be the center but the desk is just as important for what is a chair that will not fit the desk and does not allow your legs fit comfortably under the keyboard. You need to have a chair and a desk that can be adjusted to work together since everything else will revolve around these. The next step in our setup would most likely be an ergonomic mouse and keyboard and there are innumerable models available and you only need to select one that feels comfortable to you. They should be set up so they allow the arms to hang so the hands ‘float’ over the keyboard with out strain. As you see all of this revolves around the height of the chair in the first step and a desk that can be adjusted to match the chair. The whole point is to then align the rest of the setup on and around this core in a way that there is a minimum of stress on the body’core’ set-up it is just a matter of arranging the computer, monitor and all of your tools so that everything can be reached and used with a minimum of stress and strain on the body. You don’t have to finish the day with aches and pains if your workspace is adjusted to minimize stress and strain on the body. Even small things can cause a sore neck or other body parts that keep your chiropractor in business.

It truly is worth the effort if you spend any amount of time sitting at a computer during your workday. The best way to find out if this is working for you is to see how you feel at the end of the work day and if you follow. It does not require a large expense however unless you go all out. You don’t need a Miller chair and an expensive desk, you just need ones that can be properly adjusted. If you are on a tight budget you can adjust the height of your monitor with a stack of books or a cardboard box. The point is to adjust things to your body not impress people with you expensive setup. It will be easier to set up, however, if you do have the budget and it will have a more pleasing appearance.

A good number of busy people today find it difficult to keep on top of all their domestic chores. This can mean that there are opportunities for other people to offer domestic services of a range of types, one good example is car valeting. A business offering this service could be operated on a Work From Home basis and set up reasonably quickly with low start up costs.

A thorough external and internal clean of a car is a frequent requirement for lots of motorists. Some think it’s nearly on a par with going out and getting a new car! So if you are practically minded and looking for a work from home venture which does not mean sitting at a desk all day (as is the situation with most Online Jobs), then a car valeting venture could be just the thing.

A big decision you would need to make at the start is whether you do in fact work from home. If you do, bear in mind your driveway will be constantly in use and there will be considerable parking around your house. Bear in mind that neighbours can be affected by this, and could complain and stop you from trading. It is also possible that there are covenants within the deeds of your property that would stop you from carrying out a business from home, you should check this before setting up.

As an alternative therefore you may need to consider a visiting service, where you journey to your clients and undertake the valeting service at their home or workplace. You still work from home in the sense of home being your base, but you spend the majorit of your working day out and about. It will be necessary for you to carry with you some cleaning equipment and detergents, but fairly obviously water will be to hand at your clients premises. So providing you can find a good supply of clients, hopefully regular ones, then this could be the foundation for a reasonably well paid work from home business.

It’s incredible how, years after computers have landed every desk and so much of the media we consume has been converted to digital bits, people remain so deeply uneasy about the inauthenticity of things produced with digital tools. Like NYT photographer Damon Winter’s award-winning photograph, shot with iPhone app Hipstamatic. That’s the point I was trying to raise last week. More »
