The Diamond Age 2.0: De Beers opens Silicon Valley VC arm
Gallium Nitride-on-diamond wafer technology
Can diamonds be a geek’s best friend? De Beers, the global diamond conglomerate, certainly thinks so. Element Six, a De Beers subsidiary focused on manufacturing synthetic diamonds, has opened a new venture capital office in Silicon Valley.
The fund aims to invest in technology companies that use synthetic diamond, a mineral that’s chemically identical to natural diamonds but produced in a lab rather than by the traditional geologic process.
Element Six Ventures Group has actually been active since 2006, but the decision to open up an outpost in the San Francisco Bay Area is an important step for the firm, managing director Susie Wheeler said in an interview last week. “Part of our goal in being here in Silicon Valley is to go out and really proselytize diamonds to the technology companies based here,” she said. Diamond is best known for its hardness, but its other properties, such as high thermal conductivity and high radiation resistance, make it useful in applications from semiconductor manufacturing equipment to clean tech.
Element Six Ventures has already invested “tens of millions” of dollars in its seven-company portfolio. One of Element Six’s notable investments is in Diamond Detectors, a UK-based firm that manufactures the synthetic-diamond-radiation detectors used on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Wheeler did not provide specific details on how much Element Six is looking to spend on investing in Silicon Valley companies; she said the firm’s deep-pocketed parent company De Beers has not set distinct limits in place.
And the new VC firm is only the beginning, Wheeler said. In the months ahead, Element Six is also planning to build a production site in Silicon Valley for the manufacturing of synthetic diamonds. But that doesn’t mean more glitz is on the way to add fuel to all that tech bubble talk going around — Element Six makes no gems, only diamond material for technological and industrial use.

Iced-out diamond planet catches astronomers’ eyes

If you thought Kim Kardashian’s engagement ring was a ridiculous rock, you haven’t seen the ludicrously large diamond planet, J1719-1438. Scientists at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne recently spotted this celestial body that’s so dense, it’s believed to be crystalline carbon — i.e. a ginormous diamond similar in size to Jupiter. Since the 60s, astrophysicists like Marc Kuchner have theorized that carbon-heavy stars can burn out, crystallize and form diamonds under the right pressure. Supporting the idea, a white dwarf star spotted in 1992, BPM 37093, had cooled and crystallized over the course of 12 years — even copping the nickname “Lucy” after the Beatles jam. Although astronomers in Australia, Britain and Hawaii have all identified the newly spotted precious planet J1719-1438, they are still unsure if the crystallized carbon rock will be all sparkly mountains up close — dashing the hopes and dreams of material girls everywhere.

Nintendo says one Wii U controller per console, robs player two of extra screen

Nintendo’s tablet-esque Wii U controller raised a few questions when it was announced at E3. Questions like, “What kind of crazy games are going to use that thing,” and “How much will a second controller cost me?” The latter, at least, has been answered. Nothing. You don’t need one. Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata recently said in an interview that games enlisting more than one Wii U controller aren’t being considered just yet — although they are possible. Our very own Ittosai tells us that Iwata told Diamond Online that the Wii U can technically support multiple screen-controllers, but that additional slabs would be too expensive to sell on their own. Iwata went on to say that the console would ship with only one, and that game developers should design titles under the assumption that each console will use a single Wii U controller. Player two will have to settle for a good ‘ol Wiimote, and even Satoru himself admits that there are plenty of those around.
