Tuesdays usually stink for World of Warcraft. The servers go down early in the morning for maintenance, and then stay down well after the scheduled time more often than you’d care to see. Today doesn’t stink, since Patch 3.3 is indeed dropping. I cannot wait to leave the terribly fancy TC/CG office, get home, fire up the game, then PUG till the sun comes up.

So yeah, the downtime today is because Blizzard is preparing the servers for Patch 3.3, the last content patch for the game’s latest expansion, Wrath of the Lich King. That means we’ll be seeing more and more Cataclysm news and speculation from here on out. (I think I’ll be rolling a Worgen Rogue or Druid, not sure yet.)

The highlights of Patch 3.3 are as follows:

• Icecrown Citadel instance— take that, Lich King!

• Three more five-man instances

• Cross-server Looking For Group (which means when you PUG you’ll be paired off with people from servers other than your own, which should make PUGing approximately 3 million times better, especially for lower level characters)

And other stuff.

SO yeah, it’s a pretty big deal. I’m excited; it’s going to be a late night!

World of Warcraft or WoW as it is more commonly known, is a MMORPG which is an acronym for “Massively Multi player On-line Role-Playing Game”. In an MMORPG, thousands of players from around the World exist in the same on-line game world at the same time. They abandon the real world to undertake heroic quests in a land of fantastic adventures

The game has two warring factions: the Alliance and the Horde. When you have decided which side to play there are nine classes of character to choose from: Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock and Warrior.Each class has its own unique set of talents and abilities. Depending on the build you choose for your character, their talent tree can be DPS, tanking or healing.

There are 10 races to play: Dwarves, Gnomes, Humans, Night Elves, Draenei, Orcs, Tauren, Trolls, Undead and Blood Elves and many professions your character can play: Engineering, Mining, Skinning, Tailoring, First Aid Fishing, Herbalism, Leather working, Jewel crafting, Inscription, Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Cooking and Enchanting. (Note: Within the Rogue class there are two unique secondary professions: Lock Picking and Poisons).

There are thousands of quests to complete with many different kinds of weapons and transportation. In addition, there are four types of Realms which will be the very first decision you will have to make before playing World of Warcraft. Within the game itself there are two “modes” of character:

• Player Characters (which are controlled by real people)

• Non-Player Characters (which are controlled by the games’ software)

So you can find yourself playing a “real” person as well as the games created opponent.

There are a whole host of guides around and all do pretty much what they claim but some do it better by having additional features such as forums and members areas which help you level your character from 1-70 more easily. Many also have detailed gold guides and the latest up to date information on, for example, Wrath of the Lich King which takes you up to level 80! However, with that said, players are more than free to progress at their own pace and pit their skills against multiple on-line opponents. The Horde and Alliance are opposing factions locked in a struggle for control of the land – and neither side is backing down. Alliance and Horde players maybe able to do battle with each other, but they cannot trade or even talk to each other so if you have friends that would like to play, make sure you belong to the same factions!

I bet most of you do not know enough about your own class. Sure, you have a few wins under your belt in PvP, but that’s more because the other players are just as ignorant about the fundamentals as you are. Throw a bunch of beginners in a room and someone will come out on top…doesn’t mean they are the best!

Okay, I think i have made my point. I don’t want to alienate my partners in crime. However,  it does highlight the fact of how much help you need in your chosen class. Whether you’re a PvP fanatic or just a raiding pro, you probably don’t have all the tools you need – it maybe the talent spec or the gear. When I first came across Warcraft Pro I was researching playing as a Paladin. I have played many of the other classes like Hunter and Druid but decided to give Paladin a shot. However, I was really getting bored having to do all the research on the forums etc. As a bit of an old hand I wanted to enjoy the game rather than it being a chore. So, I bought the Paladin guide and started to read about what I should be doing. The basics are pretty  easy but this guide gives specifics on exact gear spec for example.  I didn’t know how to defeat a Druid in PvP (and these strategies downright work, trust me there). Basically, I learned the few things I didn’t know, reinforced what I thought I already knew and am now in the process of rotating between destroying opponents in PvP and backing up tanks in raids. The World of Warcraft faction change went down yesterday. That is, for $30 Blizzard will take your Human Warrior and turn him into an Orc Warrior. It’s handy, yes. But the fun doesn’t stop there! Blizzard is prepping a service that’ll change your intra-faction race. That means you’ll be able to go from a Blood Elf Warlock to an Undead Warlock.

Is this news new? Well, not in the strictest sense of the word. Blizzard had mentioned it during Blizzcon, but sort of in a passing fashion. A recent official message board post re-confirms that, yes, race changing is planned.

It’s primarily an aesthetic change, I think. There’s a few racial traits that may be gained, but hardly anything worth paying for.

In other news, maybe I’ll become a Druid? Not in the game, but in real life. Respect for nature, sitting Indian style a lot, etc.
