We saw the original AeroSystem One saunter into our lives a couple of month’s back, and now Jarre Technologies has collaborated with crystal house Lalique to give it a makeover. The partnership sees the original iPod dock covered in smooth glass and cut metal, which certainly sets it apart from pretty much any other dock we’ve ever seen. The dock connector sits at the top, and being inset, isn’t suitable for iPads, but if you’re getting one of these, we imagine you don’t want to ruin the aesthetic by perching a slate on top anyway. There is, however, a USB connection meaning this isn’t an iDevice only affair. If you’ve got the estimated £10,000 (or about ,840) lying around, it’ll have to keep burning that hole in your pocket until some time in March. We managed to get a quick hands — and ears — on with the only two units in the UK, but couldn’t explore much beyond how it looked in-store, bar an awkward moment when we placed an iPhone on it, only to discover it set to full volume. Check the gallery below for a closer look, or hit the PR after the break for more info.

Hifiman are well respected in the audiophile space for their headphones, amplifiers and portable music players. Their latest headphone is the HE-400, an entry-level iteration of their cans driven by planar magnetic guts. Sitting on the show floor of CES, I finally got a chance to hear these in action, and I like them. More »

With these gamer cans ready to bask in their full Xbox-certified glory in stores this week, we took the chance to hit up Tritton’s stand here at CES to try on its Primer. Despite the call-center employee appearance [above], the earphones are relatively comfortable, although the head band seemed a bit tight. While the Primer offers a 33 foot reception radius, we found its limits of receiving audio were closer to 40 feet. The mic arm is flexible, with the adjustable headband affording a certain degree of customization. Despite the 0 price tag, Tritton fans looking for something more subtle than recent efforts will be happy — just don’t walk around a conference hall kitted out in it.

If those clock radios up there look familiar, it’s because their maker, Tivoli Audio, has been spitting out pretty much the same thing for the past 11 years. Their innards, at least, have changed with the times, and here at IFA the company is showing two models — the portable PAL+ and the more stationary Model 10+ — both of which hinge on support for digital radio. They’re each compatible with DAB, DAB+ and DMB, in addition to good ‘ol FM, have dual alarms and support five station presets for each band. The main difference is that the PAL+ is weather-resistant and battery-powered, rated to last three and a half hours unplugged. At 1.85 pounds it’s still heavy enough that we’d never throw it in a carry-on, but in a world where it cost less or money were no object we might take it to the beach. You could, if you were so inclined, use the included remote to navigate the UI, though there’s also a scroll wheel up top — a neat idea, we thought, until you realize pushing that button in the center to cycle through each and every menu gets annoying fast. As for the audio quality, the speakers are powerful enough that their sound could rise above the din of the show floor, but we could still hear some tinniness coming through. The pair are available now, fetching 9 (£299) and 9 (£399), respectively, which means HD radio or no, these are, still, glorified alarm clocks.

Hello, and welcome to yet another installment of Engadget Laboratories. This time around we’re taking a pseudo scientific look at sub-0 earbuds. We’ve all been caught out, headphoneless, and desperate to put some tunes in our ears. So, the question is, what exactly do you get for your money when you stumble into a Best Buy and pick up whatever happens to be hanging on the shelves? Clearly you’re trading convenience for selection when you shuffle into a big box shop for your audio needs, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should just grab the cheapest thing hanging by the register, or the most expensive for that matter. We randomly selected four sets of phones, at four different price points, and put it to a group of average Joes and Janes to see if they could actually tell the difference between a 0 pair of buds and a pair (while blindfolded and trapped inside a booth).

Traditional speaker docks are so 2010. This year, AirPlay is in, and Philips was on hand to demo five new wireless speaker models at the CEA LineShows in NYC, set to roll out beginning later this month through the holiday season. Its flagship Fidelio SoundSphere DS9800W will ship in June with a price tag of about 0, but didn’t appear willing to pair with the iPhone Philips had on hand at the show. We did go ears-on with the more affordable DS8800W, however, which filled the small demo room with deep, rich Fire and Rain, sans-wires — and can do the same in your own home when it ships for 0 beginning next month. That model isn’t nearly as sleek as the non-functional SoundSphere model, or its smaller DS6800W counterpart, which will hit stores in time for the holidays with a 0 MSRP. Philips also showed us its 360-degree DS3881W and compact AD7000W — both of which also include AirPlay support, and will ship for 0 and 0, respectively, by the holiday season. Jump past the break for a look at all five models.

Sound is an extremely important side to enjoying home theatre and so it is clear that to get maximum audio pleasure you’d need something special like a home cinema surround sound system. The fact is that whenever we step within a film hall we would like to we are hearing sound that appears to be coming from all sides and we are drowned in this amazing sound. Basically, a home theatre surround audio system makes an attempt to copy these picture theater audio effects in a smaller way.

In the beginning, most audio systems comprised of just a pair of speakers that were placed in front and which only made mono sounds. Nonetheless now-a-days stepping within a film hall is a totally new experience and a lot of the credit for the glorious audio experience must be given to surround audio systems. These same effects may also be enjoyed at home provided you go out and get a home theatre surround-sound system.

No doubt, the higher end home cinema surround sound systems will set you back a lot of money; however you shouldn’t mind the pricetag as the experience will be really worth the cash you put down to buy the best home theatre surround audio system.

As the term “surround sound” implies the sound that you hear will be coming to you from all directions and this indicates that your ears will be deluged with sounds that come from each possible angle. Actually a good home theatre surround sound system will produce clear sound and the listener will be able to identify the direction from which the sound is coming.

Modern surround sound technology has made it eminently possible to form multiple sound channels thus enabling splitting up of sound which can often be directed to different set of speakers. In essence, buying a home cinema surround sound system ensures that you get to hear crystal clear sound rather than a mix (muddled) of sounds. Of course, you will only get maximum effects if you know how and where to place different speakers. Placing all the speakers close together is not recommended.

Today, home theatre systems have developed significantly and are a long way from when VHS was being used. Therefore it’s an excellent idea to think about getting a DVD home theatre system as you’ll be able to get some more storage facility and better audio and video output.

The bottom line is that combining a good home cinema surround sound system with excellent video projectors will provide you with an experience comparable to sitting in a real movie theater – but in the comfort of your home.

We figured Apple’s firm response to Lodsys earlier this week regarding its claims against iOS devs would prompt the patent holder to move on to its next target, and sure enough, it looks as if said target has been selected. Unfortunately, a group of Android app devs have now found themselves in the Texas-based company’s crosshairs, which is citing the same patent infringement that Apple recently addressed, relating specifically to in-app upgrade purchases. As was the case with the last round of letters, Lodsys is demanding licensing fees from small, individual developers, who don’t have the resources to fight back. Lodsys appears to be maintaining its trend of ignoring media requests, so we’re keeping an eye on the patent troll’s blog to see if anyone comes up to the surface to defend this latest round of allegations. In the meantime, plugging your ears while humming and ignoring the mailman might not be such a bad idea… you know, if you do this kind of thing for a living.
