If you want to get consumerization right, get emotional

Posted by on Friday, 9 December, 2011

Bernd Christiansen, CTO Citrix Online Services Division, and Claudia Kotchka, Innovation Advisor, ConsultantIf there’s one thing Claudia Kotcha will tell you about building apps that employees want to use, it’s to think about your employees really want. Kotcha, the former VP of innovation design and strategy at Proctor & Gamble, ought to know — she spent years creating products that millions of actual consumers loved.

One of the traditional problems in IT departments, she explained, is that engineers view themselves as the end-users instead of the real employees who use the products. And like real-world consumers, emotion often trumps cost-effectiveness or what has the most features. Often, they just want stuff that looks nice and that works.

In order to help application developers get it right, she brought in designers to help them see things from a different perspective, what she calls “cognitive diversity.” Her partner on stage, Bernd Christiansen, CTO of Citrix’s Online Services Division, also said that designers are critical. He said companies should make multiple designs to figure out the best products to actually develop.

And if you can’t figure out a way to implement an entire design, just quit, he said. Getting it half right probably won’t cut it, and just ends up being more of the same. It’s worth getting it right. Christiansen explained that he watches employees get work done on their phones walking from the car to the office, only to watch their productivity drop as soon as they get inside.

That’s because companies often force employees to use different technology inside. If IT gives them as close to the consumer experience as possible, they’ll be more productive, he said, because this generation of workers doesn’t care about how technology works. It just wants to put technology to work.

Why Instagram works

Posted by on Sunday, 19 June, 2011

You might have seen me post about San Francisco-based photo sharing service, Instagram way more than any of the newer mobile apps and services. It is because I am quite fond of the service and to it represents a unique way of thinking about mobile apps. It is also one of the applications that is built around the idea of “engagement” and they have the possibility of creating a new attention-centric monetization model.

In a few months, the company has managed to get over 5 million members and that growth hasn’t slowed down at all. Often people ask me why Instagram works. This comment that was left in response to one of photos I shared on Instagram. Instagram member @dl (DL Willson) succinctly explains why Instagram works and why it competitors have their work cut out.

Gotta say I am glad that Instagram has allowed all the moments like this one from all over the world. & with a handful of simple quick filters they understood better than other sites, photographs are almost always personal & emotional & mixing/giving the artist in everyone a chance to re-augment life with the same unseen emotion ..serendipity and meaning that can’t just be done in verbal description. They created something kinetic and wholly new to the Internet. IMHO

That comment also sums up why Instagram has a chance of becoming the mobile social hub.

Here is a video interview with Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom.

Few Important Basics In Photography

Posted by on Friday, 1 April, 2011

There has been a lot of change in the techniques and equipments in the photography field since 1980. Yet whilst the apparatus (the camera) used to capture the image and the final production of the image has changed dramatically. Even though the technology has changed a lot the techniques for filming images are still the same. You have to understand and master the basic tricks for using a camera so that you can point and click at thing view ending up with high quality images.

The most important principle for the photographer is to know your own camera. There are many difference between cameras of the same makes so you should spend some time learning the working of your camera from manuals and user interfaces. The understanding of the principles of the camera will allow you the freedom to apply what you have learned by clicking your practice shots.

1. All photographs will have a theme to shoot some excellent photographs. The image needs to tell a story. The idea or emotion you have in your front should be portrayed without missing the essence to the viewers.
2. There should be a central element that expresses the theme or focus of the story and to this end the image should focus or harness the attention of that element for the viewer.
3. There is not great photographic techniques required for capturing some eye catching photos. Ensuring that there are no distractions taking away from the central theme. distractions are common in the photographs but you can easily avoid them with little bit of care in the beginning later it will became a habit. A good image includes only those elements that are of importance to the theme of the image.

Once the operation of the camera and the three basic principles are fully understood there is really only one course of action left for the basics. Every time a photographer points the camera to take an image ask these three simple questions.

1. How are you going to capture the message and theme you have already planned.
2. Focal length should be planned in advance so that you can place your camera in the right position.
3. Does my proposed image include only those elements that are important to the theme, the story. Have I eliminated all non-essential and distracting information. Have I given myself a good clean clear simplified image that conveys my story.

Photography is one of the most interesting hobby and it is made easy with the evolution of digital photography. People who take it the hard way cannot keep away from the complexities of film cameras and Digital SLR cameras. No matter what camera you use there are still elements that require a degree of understanding to ensure a good end result.

There are more complex aspects associated with photography like depth of field, exposure and shutter speed which requires the need of digital SLR cameras for perfection. There is always the easy way around,. You can use the automatic settings present in the camera for easy photography. However even if that is all you do there is still one last remaining aspect that EVERY photographer should learn and that is Composition.
