How unique online platforms grease the wheels of innovation

Posted by on Sunday, 4 December, 2011

WheelAt the Game Developers Conference Online in Austin during the second week in October, a dozen hopeful young entrepreneurs approached our booth selling versions of the same ambitious vision. “We’re building a Massively Multiplayer Online Game. It’s going to be the next World of Warcraft, the next Call of Duty. It’s gonna be huge,” they said. These hopeful game mavens were seeking insight on exactly how you build an MMO infrastructure. Not surprisingly, many of them were woefully unprepared. They didn’t know what a load balancer was. They had no idea about data transport costs between data centers. They hadn’t really thought about the impact of hardware at cloud providers on the user experience of their game customers (hint: old servers usually mean unhappy or lost customers).

A few years ago we would have shaken our heads, wished them good luck, and figured we would probably never see that game released. Today there is a far greater chance that these folks can bring the next MMO to market. What’s changed? The arrival of specialized Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offerings. In a nutshell, a PaaS allows an entrepreneur to focus on building their cloud application, avoiding upfront capital expenses through outsourced management of their IT infrastructure to a third party.

This is a level up from the cloud itself, which provides outsourced compute power in a more raw fashion. PaaS providers offer database as a service (MongoLab, MongoHQ) or runtime environment as a service (Heroku, Nodejitsu, AppFog), for example. A PaaS can also deliver even more advanced capabilities. StackMob, for example, puts in place a suite of PaaS offerings that radically streamline mobile application development, launch and hosting by providing in one integrated package an environment to code up, host, and run in the cloud mobile applications.

What’s more, a PaaS can even be taken to the point where it eliminates almost all technology skill requirements. GameSalad allows designers to quickly design and publish game applications that even include animation purely using visual design tools. Eliminating technological complexity serves to eliminate a critical barrier to innovation and new company foundation. We’ve all met someone who felt they had a great idea for a new application of some sort. “And I’m looking for a developer or a CTO,” is inevitably the next thing out of their mouth after they pitch the idea.

If that same great idea could be built far more easily and quickly with a far smaller tech team and nominal capital expenses, then, logically the cost of bringing that idea to market drops considerably. This is the value of the PaaS. And its not just a value to guys with no tech chops. Someone that is a very solid designer and front-end coder may be highly technical but may not be comfortable at all with designing and managing a NoSQL database.

Even highly skilled developers with both front-end and server-side chops usually turn to network engineers for help with load balancing, DNS and other infrastructure aspects that are critical to ensuring a cloud-based application runs fast and clean on any device anywhere in the world. Dennis TK, founder of Foursquare, is fond of explaining that as soon as he got funded, he hired an ex-Googler to completely recode his app to keep it from breaking. If Dennis had been building Foursquare in the present, he could have probably built a more reliable, faster app by leveraging a far more robust PaaS ecosystem to remove many of the software development and infrastructure management requirements that probably caused Foursquare to be so buggy and break all the time in its initial inception.

How many more kids like Dennis are out there with whizbang innovations that could be the next WoW, the next great service for medical records delivery, or the next amazing tool for crowdsourced scientific problem solving? We don’t know but we are a lot more likely to find out in a new era of PaaS-fueled cloud innovation.

Telsa Roadster to return in 2014, 3-Series fighter in the works

Posted by on Sunday, 30 October, 2011
Didn’t have enough time to count 10 million pennies before the original Tesla Roadster went out of production? Well you’re in luck, because there’ll be a successor. Space cadet and entrepreneur extraordinaire, Elon Musk, confirmed to Autocar that a new Roadster would return in 2014. Unlike its Lotus-based predecessor, the redux will apparently be based on Tesla’s third-generation platform, which the automag muses will likely be built on a”shortened version of … the Model S.” Musk also noted that the platform will be more “mass-market,” giving rise to more pedestrian cars “like BMW’s 3 Series” — his words, not ours. With the Model S sedan on its way, and the Model X after that, the company certainly has its work cut out for it. But, if either are as delightful as prior Teslas, that’ll be reason to cheer.

Congrats on this! I am not sure if you saw the Jacob Tucker slam dunk video but he’d your song as background music for his video. It really enhanced the production. Due to his video he was voted into the NCAA slam dunk competition and won the event just last week.
Keep up favorable work. Anticipating more music of yours.

It’s Silicon Valley or the Israeli Army for This Young Entrepreneur

Posted by on Saturday, 7 May, 2011

From left: innobell CTO Daniel Shir, founder and CEO Shai Magzimof and developer Noam Modai

At precisely 20-years-and-four-months old,
Shai Magzimof is one of the hottest young entrepreneurs to emerge from Tel Aviv’s  Silicon Wadi this year.

He also happens to be on loan from the Israel Defense Force – free to wander the civilian tech world until further notice.

Magzimof is the creator of Innobell, a mobile application that makes phone calls and instant messages more interactive through a platform of dashboard add ons. The app allows users to easily play games with eachother, watch videos, send money through Paypal, cruise Facebook profiles and share all sorts of other media while chatting over the phone or IM.  Currently available in beta on Android, Innobell is slated for release on the iPhone this summer. It’s already gaining traction.

This week, Magzimof was in town to demo his app for American venture capitalists and industry giants during the California Israel Chamber of Commerce’s three day Israel Mobile tour in the Silicon Valley.  Not old enough to order a beer during the industry cocktail parties he attended, he was still among the most popular founders. In fact, while most of his fellow start up participants boarded a plane home on Friday, Magzimof is here for another week. He’s got a full schedule of get togethers with venture capitalists interested in adding to the 0,000 angel investment Innobell raised. He will also be meetings with a certain brand name tech company looking to discuss a possible talent acquisition.

But Magzimof doesn’t have all the time in the world to ponder a deal.

Last summer, the Israeli military granted him year-long deferment from mandatory service to pursue his start up. Now, he says the country is willing to give him another two years to make it big– if he can show results. He either needs to make a deal in the United States, or trade the techie uniform of jeans and ironic-slogan t-shirts for army fatigues and desert wear.

He knows what he’d prefer at the moment.

“The military knows that if I stay here for two more years and work with amazing companies, it’s all the better for them in the end because I’ll be even more experienced,” Magzimof says. “Of course, they want to see that I’m doing something here, and investors want to see that I have a deferment from the army so they know I will be around” he said.

“Basically, someone is going to get a very good deal off me right now because I don’t have time to sit and wait,” he said, laughing. “But it should all work out, I’m confident.”

This isn’t the first time military service has put him in a bit of a jam. At 19, he was a few months into Y Combinator’s winter 2010 incubator program when the phone rang. It was the Iraeli army, and the message was clear. He needed to get back in town for interviews or he could kiss his place in a coveted central intelligence unit goodbye.

What was a nice Jewish boy to do?”This is the unit want to to be in, it’s where all the computer programmers and web developers and hackers get to go, my peole. I want to do it badly,” he said.

So he flew home early and started a months-long testing process. Meanwhile, his former military prep school roommate and Y Combinator partner Daniel Gross went on to form personal data search engine Greplin.

“And you probably know the rest,” he said.

Still, Magzimof got his coveted place in the unit of his choice. And while he had time to kill, he also got back to work founding Innobell. By the time the ink on his intelligence acceptance letter had dried, he’d raised 0,000 in seed funding for his new startup. He know has a team of six developers working for the company.

Military service holds a vaulted position in Israeli’s entrepreneurial culture. Many start up founders attribute their success to those post-adolescent years spent following orders and memorizing technical manuals in specialized army units. Magzimof is as patriotic as the next Israeli and says he really wants to do his military service. He just wants to get his business under control first. But two years from now, who knows? A 22-year-old Magzimof might just be using his own app to help run a tech empire from his army bunk.
