People who work at home sometimes run into unexpected situations they have difficulties to overcome, although many of the problems could be avoided with some basic measures meant to control investment and business motion. Have you ever thought about what could go wrong with your business? Information on what may happen implies the possibility for prevention. We advise you to use a rank checker at the beginning of your marketing campaign to make it a successful one.

Entrepreneurs who choose to promote all sorts of products should have a valid agreement for the return of the merchandise in case the sales are low and the work at home business remains in the project state. Moreover, before investing in any stock or joining any kind of business, check the fees, the shipment costs, the price of the goods as well as the necessity to create stocks or supplies.

One of the dangers with work at home is that you can become an easier prey for scams, and when the business is conducted online, it is pretty difficult to recover your losses or make the culprit respond in front of the law. Make some background research before getting to work with anybody as a form to prevent scams and save the financial trouble you could easily get into. Check with government agencies and see whether there are any complaints filed against your potential partner. Use a google rank checker to keep the track of the traffic evolution on the web.

If the Internet has the highest risk danger for those who work at home, it is also the best source of information one can have. There are web sites specialized in identifying business scams and warning people about them. Risk analysis and various tests are run to identify the risk behind some too-good-to-be-true opportunities that often swarm on the Internet. Plus, both negative and positive reviews are available so that you can get to read between the lines and find out something about a potential co-worker. In case you need more info, click here!

There are also work at home opportunities that have nothing to do with the Internet. Baby sitting and house cleaning services are two often encountered cases of business owners who choose to use their time making their money independently. The advantage of work at home is that one is free to use time in a flexible way according to personal and family needs. Therefore, work at home employment forms are often advertised in newspapers too in the classifieds category.

It’s the dawn of a new year, so let’s take a look back at one of the hottest-selling phones of the last one. A low-key launch couldn’t dispel a summer of hype for the handset: Apple went for evolution when we were expecting a revolution — even though we’d seen the same with the 3G/3GS. In the cold light of January, we can see the 4S for what it is: a refined experience that lacks a compelling reason to pay an early-upgrade fee. If you were in the planning meeting for the iPhone 6 (it’s a hunch), what would you be pushing for? Built-in NFC? Would you have kept Siri under wraps until it had left beta? Do you resent the existence of any phone that can’t run Android? Constructive and polite suggestions in the comments below, impolite ones should be written down on a piece of paper and sent to the usual address.

But I bought one a couple months ago for a Christmas present for my parents and the device finally showed up a couple days before the big day.

Since I was planning to give it as a present, I didn’t want to configure the device, but I did want to do a lil unboxing for y’all so you can see what it looks like and what you get inside. The packaging does remind me of Apple products (the creators designed the iPod and the iPhone), but the real test will come when we try to install the thermostat. I’m slightly worried about my parents tackling this project, but I’ll let you know how they fare in a couple weeks.

Siri hasn’t been caught cooking dinner yet, but hackers worldwide have boldly taken Apple’s personal assistant to a whole new level by incorporating its functionality with a plethora of different devices. We’ve seen Siri use custom commands, change the temperature in your house, and even allow select car owners to utilize their automobile’s Bluetooth integration. Nifty, no doubt, but this assistant’s evolution towards greater heights isn’t over yet. Vimeo user toddtreece has whipped up a slick demo of the iPhone 4S’ right hand gal (or guy) taking command of his television set. From changing channels to turning off devices, with the help of a proxy and a few parts, you can get your own home setup running on voice activation. Feeling a bit guilty for your sudden interest in slothfulness? Fret not — Siri’s apparently quite good at calling you out. Have a look just after the break.

	[Thanks, Jesse]

Most of the time it’s just around the block or a few minutes on the driving track. But for our latest episode, we took Mitsubishi’s all-electric i MiEV out for a full day of driving, running it through its paces on the highway, in the city, parallel parking, looking for a charge, and packing it with people (and stuff). Here are our impressions:

Amid lackluster BlackBerry PlayBook sales, 1,000 production line workers have been let go at Quanta in Taiwan where the tablets are made. Quanta confirmed the layoff figures to DigiTimes, although the company didn’t comment on specific clients or activities of the former employees. The figure of 1,000 workers is estimated to be half of the total production resources used to manufacture Research In Motion’s tablet computer.

On its most recent quarterly investor call just last week, RIM reported shipping a scant 200,000 PlayBook tablets. In the prior quarter, the first one that included PlayBook shipments, the company shipped 500,000 units. Bear in mind that shipped doesn’t mean sold and the company hasn’t yet said how many tablets have actually been sold. Regardless, there’s a few problems here.

In a fast growing tablet market, PlayBook shipments should be growing, not shrinking. DigiTimes sources indicate that RIM expected to build and ship between 4 and 5 million PlayBooks in 2011, but it’s clear that the actual figure will be a small percentage of that number. And QNX, RIM’s future operating system for phones, is the featured platform for the tablet; if it fails to impress or doesn’t sell devices, the company is at risk for losing momentum before it ever gets QNX on BlackBerry handsets.

When RIM cut 2,000 jobs back in July, I noted that the company was taking too long to transition from its legacy BlackBerry OS to the more modern QNX platform. At the time, I said:

The entire situation reemphasizes that RIM has been too slow to change in a market that’s moving fast. The BlackBerry Storm, an attempt at an all-touchscreen device, was met with fanfare in 2008, but it never materialized as a solid competitor to Apple’s iPhone. Last year’s BlackBerry Torch was more evolution than revolution.

And the company’s plan to run future phones on a QNX-powered platform makes sense, but RIM bought QNX in April of 2010 and there are still no handsets announced for the new operating system. Instead, new Bold handsets are the latest offerings announced; they appear delayed and will run a new version of BlackBerry OS, not QNX. They’re also not expected to be upgradable to QNX either.

QNX runs great on the PlayBook and I actually enjoy using it. What the PlayBook can do, it does very well; the bigger problem is what it can’t do. Although there’s a software update expected next month to address some of these problems, the device still has no standalone, native email application and doesn’t yet run the promised Android apps that will help offset a relative lack of third-party software.

In hindsight, RIM should have focused its QNX efforts on handsets before trying to compete in the tablet market. Early this year, RIM suggested that QNX is best suited for dual-core chips, but given that the QNX-powered Colt handset is expected to use a single-core chip, that justification to push tablets first now seems weak at best.

As it stands today, it appears that the company tried to jump in to tablets first in order to leverage the market’s fast growth. But as Google Android Honeycomb tablets have illustrated, you can’t simply show up for the race and expect to win. It takes a full-featured solution, a broad ecosystem, and smart marketing to gain sales. And as much as the tablet market is growing, it is still dwarfed by smartphone sales.

RIM would have gained more bang for the buck if QNX was first put on its smartphones. Instead, it appears that the first run of the PlayBook is a relatively lost cause for the company and it will have to hope that software updates are enough to have consumers take a second look at RIM’s first tablet.

While some in the media sphere are consumed by the desire to redesign the way news websites like the New York Times look, others are thinking about redesigning how we write about the news online — including Vadim Lavrusik, who handles journalism outreach for Facebook, and wrote a recent post for the Nieman Journalism Lab on the topic of redesigning the news story. But the reality is that these two things are closely connected: most news websites look the way they do because most news organizations still approach journalism in a fairly traditional way, and until that changes and media outlets embrace the idea of “news as a process,” the way that their websites look is unlikely to change.

That’s not to say that news sites like the New York Times haven’t made concessions to the real-time nature of news, or the fact that many stories no longer have a defined beginning or end — something Paul Ford wrote about for New York magazine recently, describing traditional media as the “epiphanator” because of its love of tidy endings. The NYT often posts stories that are time-stamped, so that readers can see when they were created, and on some of its blogs it occasionally posts updates that have time stamps on them as well, so that it’s obvious when new information was added.

The news, frozen in time

Those kinds of concessions are few and far between, however. In many cases, both on the web and in the NYT’s iPad app, the impression given is that the news displayed is frozen in time, a snapshot of reality taken at a particular moment — in some cases the previous day, and in other cases a time that is difficult to pin down. It’s not just the NYT, obviously: Other news outlets suffer from the same problem, in many cases because their publishing systems are set up to pump out newspapers, not websites. But it’s also a symptom of the way that many media outlets think about what they do.

Media analyst and journalism professor Jeff Jarvis has written about the idea that the story format is an antiquated model that no longer serves the purposes that real-time and digital media require, and there is a lot of truth to that. My response to Jeff’s original piece — where I tried to defend the need for curation and analysis as well as real-time streaming of news — seemed to rub Jeff the wrong way, although I don’t think those two things are mutually exclusive. But how do we blend them together? How does the real-time nature of journalism and the explosion of sources change the way that news organizations publish?

In his Nieman Lab piece, Lavrusik talks about some of the elements that media companies need to consider when designing the future of the news story, including the need for context, which is what I was trying to get at in my response to Jarvis’ piece: it’s great that Andy Carvin of National Public Radio is curating thousands of tweets from the Middle East about the Arab Spring, and that one-man newswire is hugely informative — but how do we make sense of that for people who aren’t connected to Twitter all the time?

Curating the curator

Ideally, someone would have an army of reporter/editors “curating the curator,” by pulling together stories (or whatever we want to call them) from Carvin’s stream, or anyone else who is doing something similar. Storify and Storyful provide tools for doing this — something I’ve argued is becoming a crucial part of what journalists do in this real-time, digital age — but so far not many traditional news organizations have made use of these or any other similar tools. The New York Times and other newspapers have done their own live-blogging of news events, but it is still relatively rare.

Brian Stelter of the NYT provided a great example of how real-time journalism occurs when he used Twitter and Tumblr to report on the tornado in Missouri earlier this year. Not only did his use of those tools allow people to see what he was experiencing behind the scenes as he reported, but readers could effectively see the story taking shape in front of them as it occurred, instead of reading about it in pre-packaged story format later. But while the tweets and Tumblr posts and photos contributed to his eventual story, none of that content appeared on the NYT site while it was happening.

Why can’t we see the evolution of the story?

It’s great that the New York Times allowed Stelter to experiment with Tumblr in this way, but why couldn’t the paper make more use of that content somehow on its actual website? I don’t know exactly how it would do that — maybe a Twitter module that updates in real time, or an embedded Tumblr stream of some kind, or a Storify widget that some editor puts together based on Stelter’s output. On a related note, why has no one experimented with former Salon editor Scott Rosenberg’s idea of story versions, so readers can see which parts of a story have changed over time?

As Lavrusik notes in his piece, user contributions are another huge element of the news that few organizations are really taking advantage of. Many newspapers have the occasional feature where readers can contribute photos, and most have comments — but those comments are often hidden or dumped in a heap at the bottom of a post, where they seem like an afterthought. When everyone can be a publisher and anyone with a smartphone can function as a journalist, how do we incorporate that into the way a modern digital-news organization functions?

Maybe somewhere there is a newspaper or web designer who is thinking about a new kind of site that can incorporate these kind of real-time elements. I hope so, because the way that most news sites function has to change if it’s going to adapt to the way that the news works now — instead of trying to patch and tweak a decades-old publishing model. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for more links about the evolution of the news story, Associated Press editor Jonathan Stray had a great roundup in a recent post.

Another tasty electric race bike has been unveiled, this one with a lovely promo video — and an opportunity for you to ride one. It’s the eCRP 1.4, an evolution of the company’s 2010 eCRP 1.2 and poised for entry in the all-electric TTXGP series. This new bike offers two motors pumping out a combined 70hp and 89 lb-ft of torque and making a lovely sound you can hear for yourself in the video below. More interestingly you can rent one and hear it for yourself, hanging on for dear life around some of the best tracks the world has to offer. Cost? That’s between you and eCRP, of course, but we’re guessing it won’t be surprisingly affordable.
