Boys will always be boys. They have this fixation on cars, speed, the audacity of racing, and wreckage. My hat goes off to the ladies who have also followed this very masculine defined sport. What is with cars and racing cars? What’s this Racing Nascar all about? It basically stands for National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. It is a family-owned and operated business venture that watches over numerous auto racing events across the United States. NASCAR series include the Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Craftsman Truck.
The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing or NASCAR is a family-owned business venture introduced by Bill France Sr. in 1948. It administers auto racing events across the nation and even Canada. The Sprint Cup, Nationwide and the Craftsman Truck series all dominate NASCAR’s races. Its predecessors were basically the three divisions it had when it all started: Modified, Roadsters and Strictly Stock. NASCAR has reached countries like Japan, Mexico and Australia with their exhibition races. They have 1,500 races in more than 100 grand tracks in 39 states on-shore.
Simply put, stock racing is having a car speed around an oval and points are allocated in every lap they finish. But it’s not just about racing cars; it’s about the car itself. Stock cars, in the beginning, were automobiles that have not been modified from its original factory settings. It eventually changed to mean building an automobile uniquely different from the ordinary commercially produced vehicles. Their sole purpose was to race.
NASCAR stock car may seemingly resemble an America-made sedan but in fact, they are custom built following strict regulations governing car designs. They are based on four-door American made cars. The currently eligible race cars include the Ford Fusion, Dodge Charger, Chevrolet Monte Carlo and the Toyota Camry. There have been specific modifications to its chassis, suspension, and engine. Example, NASCAR requires carbureted engines while the common passenger car uses fuel injection.
They totally look different from the sleek and pointy open wheel cars of Formula One, CART and IRL series. NASCARS have fenders which sort of protects the vehicle from hooking up with the other vehicle’s wheel should they come in contact. That would be instant wreckage! It is actually a crowd-pleaser but definitely a pocket-drainer for sponsors.
My friends told me that being in the race ground itself is a thrilling experience because it calls for all your five-senses to work. I was skeptical about it until I actually went. The colors of these cars are so vivid with sponsors blaring their own hues. Then the sound of the engines revving up and as they speed through the oval, fans would be screaming like there was no tomorrow. The air will be dusty bringing with it the smell of burnt rubber and fuel. You take a whiff of it as you drink from your cold beverage. The sun on your face wouldn’t bother you as much as the reverberation of the ground beneath your seat. Some folks just got hooked to it. I still ain’t.
This part-glamour sport generates activities that bring it jobs to thousands and encourages spending from fans. Racing Nascar also gathers the best minds in the auto industry and makes use of the advancement of technology. That’s NASCAR from my point of view and that’s good enough for me.
