Home automation provider Control4 has finally seen fit to open up its systems to Android users, releasing a version of its MyHome software for phones and tablets. Already available on iOS and PCs, it lets homeowners with Control4 setups manage their video, music, lighting and more on their own devices with taps and gestures. The apps themselves are free, but naturally one will need a MyHome license to use them, which runs 9 for multiple devices at one location or 9 for a single device. Of course, if you’ve had one of these installed scraping together the cash probably won’t be too difficult, while you’re checking the couch for loose change we’ll sit back and wonder whatever happened to that Android@Home project we (haven’t) heard so much about.

After offering to swap out a few faulty first gen iPod nanos in Korea back in 2009, it appears Apple has finally seen fit to get them out of owner’s pockets here in the US too. An email just sent to registered owners (included after the break) and notice posted on its replacement program site inform users the affected units were sold between September 2005 and December 2006. If you have one (seriously, yours still works?), stop using it right now and fill out the form at the link below to order a free replacement unit. The main inconvenience — other than finding out you’ve been walking around with the possibility of a “rare case” of overheating taking place in your skinny jeans — is an anticipated six-week lag between Apple receiving the old unit and shipping you out a replacement. The reason given for waiting so long to replace them is that when it comes to this issue “the likelihood increases as the battery ages” — and, it’s finally too late for you to run out and get a Zune. No word yet on which models will be sent out as replacements, but if yours is personalized, then sorry — no inscriptions available.

[Thanks, Paul & Jordan]

It’s the plane so nice, they unveiled it twice. Boeing once again presented its long-awaited and much-delayed 787 Dreamliner to client All Nippon Airways, but this time the goods were officially delivered. After taking the wraps off the airliner early this August, the aerospace company managed to get a flight-ready unit over to its Everett, Washington production plant for a celebratory hand-off. Despite a fit of stops and starts for the line’s rollout, Boeing expects to meet ANA’s order of its future 55-strong fleet, producing an additional 20 craft for the Japanese airline by 2013′s end. If you want to be among the select few to call “First!,” you might want to consider booking that Japan-bound vacation now.

Dunhill’s svelte new solar charger is certainly attractive. It looks better than most of its cousins, and can hold up to 30 hours of juice for your phone or gadget. But it is just me, or does it look vaguely like a switchblade? More »

Softbank customers in Japan can simply get an NFC sticker to add some contact-less payments to their iPhone 4, but most folks don’t have it quite so easy just yet. There are some alternatives while you wait for Apple to hop on the NFC bandwagon, however, like this solution from Unplggd‘s Vivian Kim. It uses one of the smaller NFC-equipped credit cards now available from some banks, which is apparently just small enough to fit under the back cover of an iPhone 4 (a clear one, in this case, to show off your cleverness). And, yes, it apparently still works just fine under there — even if you add a case on top of it.

You’d think after unveiling a duo of Android 3.1 slates along with a bare-bones model Archos would have washed its hands of tablets for at least a couple months, right? Of course not — the French company that just won’t quit has sent yet another tab through the FCC, this one dubbed the A70S2. And that’s about all the outfit let slip on the subject — at least until August 19th when the confidentiality protection covering the tablet’s juiciest details expires. The company wouldn’t throw us a screen size, resolution, or even a confirmation that yes, this thing might well run Android like the bulk of Archos’ other tablets. So if this game of “what the heck is this?” doesn’t bear fruit, let’s take the opportunity to have a (one-sided) heart-to-heart with our favorite French tablet maker. Archos, isn’t it about time you added an easy-to-hold, 7-incher with Android 3.1, 250GB of storage, and HDMI-out to the mix? We think it’d fit in perfectly.
