Last week it was Sony, and today it was Hitachi announcing [JP] a flood of new flat-screen TVs for the Japanese market. Hitachi does sell TVs outside this country, too, so chances are the four plasmas and seven LCDs find their way into other markets as well. (Some models will be offered in different colors, which is why you see more than 11 TVs in the picture above.)

The company has divided their new line-up of Woo TVs into three series (XP05, HP05 and H05).

XP05

The flagship XP05 series consists of three plasma TVs, namely a 42- ($2,650), a 46- ($3,100) and a 50-inch model (P50-XP05 for $3,650, pictured above). All of these devices are full HD, support DLNA, feature 4 HDMI ports and come with a 320GB internal HDD. The two LCD TVs in this series, a 32- ($1,900) and a 37-inch model ($2,200), just have a resolution of 1,366×768 (IPSα panel). But a 320GB internal HDD and DLNA support are on board as well.

HP05

The HP05 series includes just two TVs, a plasma (the P42-HP05 with 42 inches for $2,200 is pictured above) and an LCD model (32 inches, $1,600). Buyers will get a resolution of 1,024×768 for the plasma and 1,366×768 for the LCD. Both TVs offer DLNA support and a 250GB internal HDD.

H05

The four LCD TVs of the H05 series are entry-level devices with 1,366×768 resolution. Hitachi offers a 19- ($770), a 22- ($880), a 26- ($990) and a 32-inch model (the L32-H05 for $1,100 is pictured). All of these TVs have an IPS panel (just the 32-incher has an IPSα panel), support DLNA (client only) but lack an internal HDD.

The TVs of all three series will hit Japanese stores on April 17.

Flat-screen televisions are a major upgrade from existing cathode-ray tube TVs, making new high-definition sets one of the hottest-selling items in consumer electronics. But that dazzling picture and bigger screen come with a price: higher energy use.

To individual consumers, a bigger flat-screen TV might mean a noticeable bump in monthly electric bills. But at a national level, the onrush of these new energy-hungry TVs is a growing concern.

On Friday, the California Energy Commission finalized a proposal to regulate energy consumption in TVs sold in California sold after 2011.

The move is significant because California’s stringent efficiency standards in appliances have impacted codes across the country in the past. California’s efficiency measures in big appliances, such as refrigerators, have been credited with keeping the per capita electricity consumption in the state steady since the 1970s.

But not everyone is happy with the California measure, which is expected to pass in November. Industry association the Consumer Electronics Association opposes the proposal, arguing that any efficiency improvements should come from consumer demand rather than regulation.

If I buy a new flat-screen TV, will I be slapped with a huge energy bill?

Not necessarily. The primary reason flat-screen TVs consume more power is because they are bigger. The California Energy Commission estimates that per square inch, LCDs consume a bit more than CRTs, but most people are also upgrading in size, which means significantly more electricity use. That’s one reason why TV product ratings from the likes of CNET and Consumer Reports now include yearly energy consumption estimates.

What’s the best way to ensure that you win the Buffalo mayoral primary? Why, by promising an entire voting bloc brand new flat screen TVs! Byron W. Brown just won the Democratic primary (he’s unopposed in November, so this victory means he just won the mayorship), and you can see him here (around the 50 second mark) promising to help seniors out by installing a new TV.

Why is this on CrunchGear? Because 1) it’s a fun, light-hearted story and 2) who doesn’t want a new TV every now and then?

No word on what brand or size Mayor Brown promised, nor if he actually plans to deliver said TV to the senior center. Here’s hoping.

Recently revealed at the Caravan Salon Dusseldorf RV show, the Snakeliner President-Suite is the perfect recreational vehicle for those who like to look absolutely ridiculous when they pull into a campsite. Its 969 square feet of living space (when fully expanded) is carried on an actual tractor trailer, and amenities include everything you could possibly imagine like central heating, a whirlpool, flat screen TVs in every room, a waterbed, remote window shades and of course satellite TV.

But the options are even more ridiculous and include such luxuries as granite floors, a garage, a motorboat in the ‘cellar’ and even a helicopter landing pad. Not surprisingly the base version of the Snakeliner runs just under $930,000, though I’m sure that can easily be pushed past a cool million with a fully loaded configuration.
