Ice Cream Sandwich leak outs Music 4.0.1 for download, previews Google+ 2.0

Posted by on Friday, 7 October, 2011

A funny thing happened to the folks at Android Police, the same group responsible for leaking some of the first screenshots of Ice Cream Sandwich. They’ve since come across a few apps from Google’s upcoming release — purportedly straight from a Nexus Prime. The first is Google Music 4.0.1 — a marked upgrade from the current 3.0.1 found in the Market today — which sports refined tabs, a contextual dialog and new player controls. For reference, the latest version is shown on the right, which is most likely installed onto a Gingerbread device. Best yet, the APK is currently up for download (which you’re able to grab for yourself from the source). There’s also a sneak peek of the upcoming Google+ 2.0, which suggests Messenger (formerly Huddle) and Conversations will be renamed to… get this… Chords. Feel free to take a peek after the break, or check out the full gallery at the second source link below.

Xperia X10 goes on sale for just a dollar on contract, Gingerbread-flavored future makes it appealing

Posted by on Sunday, 3 April, 2011

Okay, so a couple of weeks back, we wouldn’t have cared if Best Buy was willing to give us money to carry the Xperia X10, we still would have steered clear of its flawed UI and outdated software. But Sony Ericsson did a funny thing last Friday by promising to slap Gingerbread on this 4-inch sucker, which makes its current contract price an eminently more intriguing proposition. We scouted out Best Buy’s web outlet and couldn’t find the X10 listed at all, so this could very well be a final stock clearance of the handset available on a store-by-store basis. If you’re tempted to jump on what’s looking like the cheapest Gingerbread device for a while, you should be aware that the Android 2.3 update won’t be dropping until the end of Q2 at the earliest, so there will be a modicum of patience required.

[Thanks, Adam]

Archos 8 Home Tablet Visits The FCC

Archos 8 Home Tablet Visits The FCC

When the iPad was unveiled, many folks laughed at its thick bezel, now looking at the FCC documents for what should be the Archos 8 home tablet, we’re reminded how thick bezels can actually be. In the document that Archos submitted, the device is labeled as the Model 7800 Android MID. From the documentation, you’ll notice that it sports the same Rockchip RK2808 SoC (System-on-Chip) found in the Archos 7 home tablet, and a 800 x 480 pixel resistive touchscreen from Hannstar. The funny thing is that Hannstar lists the display as a 7-inch one while, while the Archos 8 is supposed to have an 8-inch display. Perhaps the bezel plays a part in the reported display size, eh?

CrunchGear meetup this Thursday in Lexington, Kentucky

Posted by on Tuesday, 27 April, 2010

So a funny thing happened to me the other day. I ran a little contest to give away the Time is Money calculator and clock. A guy named Tim won the TIM clock, which was pretty funny. I asked Tim for his mailing address, and he lives in lovely Lexington, KY. Funnily enough, I’m heading there this weekend to visit a friend! So I offered to personally deliver the TIM clock to Tim. And then I thought, hey, let’s make it a meetup!

Thursday, March 29 I’ll be getting into town around 8, I hope, and I’ll need time to freshen up after the long drive. So let’s all plan to meet at Pazzo’s around 9 PM. They’re only open until 11, so you don’t have to worry about me keeping you out too late.

Leave a comment if you plan on coming, so we can have a rough idea of head-count.

The Adidas Jo’bulani will be used in the FIFA World Cup final

Posted by on Tuesday, 20 April, 2010

You’re already familiar with the Adidas Jabulani, the ball that will be used during the FIFA World Cup this year. It’s the roundest ball ever created—impressive—and hopefully Messi will score many goals with it. Well, now say hello to the Jo’bulani, the ball that will be used during the final game of the tournament. It seems to be a palette swap of the Jabulani, with gold paint in place of the Jabulani’s green-black.

The ball was unveiled earlier today in Germany in a ceremony attended by the Adidas CEO, German soccer legend Franz Beckenbauer, and current South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Perreira.

The fact that I have a Franz Beckenbauer story to link to is insane.

The name? It, too, is essentially a mod, but of the original name, Jabulani. It’s a reference to Johanesburg, where the final match of the tournament will take place.

Bwin still has Spain as the favorites, followed by Brazil and Argentina.

Team USA is in 11th place, between Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana.

The funny thing is I can name more players on the Côte d’Ivoire team than on the USA team.

Even as tiny blocks, you’ll recognize Super Mario Bros. in this Arduino project

Posted by on Wednesday, 10 March, 2010

Funny thing, isn’t it? That you can watch some little blocks moving on an 8×8 LED matrix and recognize the first level of Super Mario Bros. buried in the squares?

Developed by a Carnegie Mellon student named Chloe for an Arduino class, the project is “a simple version of Super Mario Bros using an 8×8 LED matrix (one color), an Arduino Nano, two buttons for the input (forward and jump), and a piezo sensor hooked to a separate Arduino for the theme song.” Nice work, young lady. I give it an A++, the highest mark known to mankind.
