Choosing is hard. And in the case of ASUS’ forthcoming netbook line, totally not necessary. Just days after Intel snuck out details surrounding the next generation of its Atom line, out flows shots and information about what’ll undoubtedly be one of the first next-gen netbooks to use ‘em. The Eee PC Flare line is expected to supplant the long-standing Seashell range at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, with a smattering of models to be lining ASUS’ booth. Outside of lively, sleeker exteriors, we’re told to expect models with the new N2600 and N2800 Atom CPU line, a 12-incher powered by AMD’s Fusion APU line and the token chiclet-style keyboard that we’ve all grown used to. It’s also possible that we’ll see revised 10-inchers alongside the big boys, with the 1225B, 1225C, 1025C and 1025CE named in particular. Naturally, we’ll be bringing you more as we get it. Oh, and “netbooks are back, baby!”

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com.

Anyone who caught the series premiere of Grimm, NBC’s new fairy-tale-and-crime-procedural would have seen another sort of unearthly fusion: a Palm Pre device ringing like an iPhone. The phone then switches to the typical webOS interface we’ve long admired, picking up reception on AT&T along the way. We’re torn over whether they’re using a Pre 2 or another Palm family member, though the screen looks too dinky for it to be the mythical Pre 3. But in a world of monster hunters and big bad wolves, we guess anything’s possible.

[Thanks, Ben]

Fusion-io, a newly public company that makes flash memory components for servers, on Monday released the results of its acquisition of IO Turbine, a mere three weeks after it acquired the startup. The combination of the two companies has resulted in a product called ioCache, that will compete in the newly hot space of boosting the performance of virtualized apps.

IO Turbine’s software helps virtualized servers manage their access to Flash memory, and enabled companies to put workloads such as databases that require fast access to memory in the cloud. FlashSoft and others also are hoping to compete in this space as solid state drives and Flash memory become more common inside corporate data centers.

It made sense that Fusion-io, which is providing the hardware to build out distributed Flash memory would be interested in picking up a software layer that could make its hardware more functional. Companies such as Facebook are deploying servers with Fusion-io cards inside them, creating a network of distributed storage that has to be managed. IO Turbine’s software can do that. IO Turbine’s software works with any solid state drives that use Flash (or even hard drives) and Fusion-io will offer it bundled with its components or on a standalone basis.

David Flynn, CEO of Fusion-io, said the two companies had been working together for the last year or so, and once Fusion-io went public it had the resources to buy IO Turbine,” We didn’t try to go public to get bought, but to do the buying,” he said referring to a story I had written in March when Fusion-io filed to go public and I suggested the move was a feint to drive up interest so someone would acquire the company.

Instead it was part of a strategy to get people interested in Fusion-io as more than just a provider for webscale companies trying to improve performance on a small subset of Internet apps that have to access a lot of data really quickly. Flynn wants to convince enterprise buyers that performance Flash belongs in their servers. With IO Turbine’s software running on the Fusion hardware, enterprises can continue consolidating their IT resources by putting more virtual machines on a server without slowing down the VMs’ ability to access stored data.

Once companies realize that the transition to Flash Memory (while more expensive on a per gigabyte basis than hard drives) can save them in terms of server costs because they can run more applications on a server, or even host more applications in the cloud, Flynn believes that Fusion-io can break into the enterprise market. This new product is the first big step.

This time out, we’ll be joined by The Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Julie Samuels to discuss Google’s Motorola buy, Samsung vs. Apple, and whether the patent system is as broken as people seem to think.

Fusion Garage’s Chandra Rathakrishnan will be talking up the Grid 10 and Grid 4, and why his company deserves a second chance.

Also, Tim travels all the way to Italy to uncover the future of Ferrari, and Brian swings by Times Square, to get Engadget’s name up in lights. Dana will join us in studio to take a look at the latest BlackBerrys from RIM and some cool oversea gadgets that you can’t get in the US, and we’ll wrap the whole thing up with an in-studio performance by Parts & Labor’s Dan Friel.

Back when we gave Ford’s SYNC AppLink a test drive in that little green Fiesta, we got word that the Mustang was next in line to receive the service. Well, earlier this year, the auto outfit Linked-up the Mustang and now it’s rolling out the application for 10 new 2012 models, including the F-150, Fusion (Hybrid and otherwise), Super Duty, and Expedition. It also says it’s got a slew of developers lining up to bring hands-free control of their apps to AppLink. For now, though, no matter which SYNC-enabled beast you boast, or which OS you’re rocking (BlackBerry OS, iOS, or Android), you’ll be riding dirty with just two linked apps at most. Full PR after the break.

Okay, picture an ASUS Eee PC 1015. Got it? Good — now picture it with AMD Fusion internals. Boom: the 1015B is born. We spied versions in both white and black trim here at CeBIT, promising 1080p output in your choice of 1.2GHz single-core and 1GHz dual-core APUs, both with ATI Radeon HD 6250 graphics, 1GB of RAM (expandable to 2), and Bluetooth 3.0 along with 802.11b/g/n WiFi. If you’re looking for something a little beefier, ASUS has a Fusion remake of the 1215, too — the 1215B — with many of the same features but the added benefit of a larger 12.1-inch WXGA LCD, an optional 1.6GHz AMD E350 dual-core processor, and up to 4GB of RAM. No word on when these will be in retail channels, but by all appearances, these are production or very-near-production models on display here at the show, so we imagine they’ll be popping up any time now.

Google Tech Talks Feb. 13, 2008 ABSTRACT Presented by Dr. James Grossnickle Nuclear fusion, the process that powers the sun, can also be harnessed for power on Earth. Present research in magnetic confinement fusion is promising and advancing. ITER (international thermonuclear experimental reactor), based on the tokamak configuration, has been sited and will begin construction soon. An alternate approach to a tokamak is being studied at the University of Washington, based on the Field Reversed Configuration (FRC). The FRC has a much simpler, linear geometry, as opposed to the toroidal structure of the tokamak, and extremely high b (the ratio of plasma pressure to magnetic pressure) which gives it tremendous advantages in size and cost, and also allows the potential to burn advanced fuels, and to be used in space applications. Speaker: Dr. James Grossnickle, Research Scientist, Dept. Aeronautics & Astronautics, University of Washington.
