Adidas Finale Madrid: This is the fancy ball that will be used at the Champions League final (updated)

Posted by on Wednesday, 10 March, 2010

The convergence of sportand technology! I don’t know, I think it’s cool. So, here’s another. This is the Finale Madrid, and it will be used at the UEFA Champions League final in Madrid this May. In a perfect world, the game will be played between Real Madrid and Barcelona—I will lose my mind if that happens.

Like other soccer balls (the Adidas Jabulani and the Nike T90 Ascente), there’s a lot going on in here. You see the stars? Somehow, Adidas has managed to make that completely inseparable from the ball itself—it’s not just painted on there. That helps ensure the ball’s flight is as unobstructed as possible. The ball keeps the PSC Texture as seen in previous balls. It’s the golf ball effect: golf balls have dimples in order to steady the flight, and so does the Finale Madrid.

Again, the UEFA Champions League final will be played in Madrid (Real Madrid’s home stadium, the Santiago Bernabéu, to be exact) on May 22. I will be completely unreachable during the game.

UPDATE Oh my God, Real Madrid has been knocked out of the Champions League by Olympique Lyon of France. Can anyone give me a ustream link to La Rambla in Barcelona? I can only imagine they’re partying like it’s 1999 in Catalunya right now.

Mythbusters test golf ball effect on real car

Posted by on Friday, 23 October, 2009

It’s almost like someone got their Top Gear in my Mythbusters lately. First the duct tape holding up a car, and now the ‘golf ball’ effect on mileage. So what exactly does happen when you cover a car with clay, and then dimple it like a golf ball?

You can watch the video and find out, or just scroll past the picture of the lovely Kari Byron. The car part is about 40 minutes in.

Yes. Apparently, covering your car in clay and dimpling it like a golf ball will result in a significant increase in gas mileage. Who would of thunk it? The real trick it to make sure the dimples are scaled up to the proper size. I could get into the science, but it’s easier to let Jamie and Adam tell you all about it.

Video putt putt game is really expensive

Posted by on Tuesday, 6 October, 2009

puttputtPutt putt fanatics, start saving up for your own in-home virtual miniature golf arcade game – at $6,900 plus $550 for shipping, you could probably build an actual course in your backyard for far cheaper.

For the financially unencumbered, though, this may be a worthwhile purchase as you follow your dream of becoming Intergalactic Mini Golf Champion of the Universe.

There are two built-in courses and the actual putting system works by rolling a real-life golf ball toward the base of the 32-inch LCD video screen, at which point “the ball is detected by the game’s computer [and] the virtual world takes over, calculating both the direction and speed of the ball.”

Up to four players can play, and courses include a “casino-themed Las Vegas course or the tiki torch-themed Paradise Island.”

Golfers Mug combines coffee and putting

mug

Ah the Golfers Mug: such a simple idea. Drink your coffee and then lay the mug on the floor flat-side down for a little putting practice before you tackle the day ahead.

I might suggest putting with a new golf ball to avoid potential pesticide ingestion. That, or cleaning the mug and/or your balls on a somewhat regular basis.

The Golfers Mug costs £8 ($13). Looks like it’s only available in the UK at the moment.

Play More Notepad Makes Me Want To Take More Notes

Designed by the Netherlands based studio Trapped in Suburbia the ‘Play More’ notepad ended up being a finalist at the European Design Awards according to Top Cultured. And rightfully so! The clever notepad features standard lined paper on one side, but on the other is a series of patterned prints that makes the page end up looking like everything from a soccer ball to a baseball to even a golf ball when crumpled up.

Sadly it’s not available for sale, but I hope Trapped in Suburbia realizes they could probably make a small mint if they managed to produce these and sell them to stores like Urban Outfitters.
