New Xbox 360 bundle incoming? Smaller, 250GB HDD, Project Natal built-in.

Posted by on Wednesday, 14 April, 2010

Full credit to Microsoft: it’s still got people paying top-dollar for its nearly five-year-old Xbox 360. It’s gonna need to sweeten the deal, though, to keep people a-buyin’. Like, say, a new bundle? Maybe a bundle with a thinner 360 and built-in Project Natal? Sounds about right.

This, according to one of the fancy analysts at Wedbush Morgan. The idea is for Microsoft to keep the system at the $299 level, but increase the “value” of it all. A thinner system (à la the PS3 Slim), 250GB hard drive, and Natal thrown in for good measure.

I don’t know, $300 dollars for the Xbox 360, in 2010? It just seems like so much money for that old jalopy…

Free Poker Online Guide to Understanding Styles of Play and How This Will Win More Games

Posted by on Saturday, 13 March, 2010

Playing paid or free poker online is a game of skill, chance with a little luck thrown in for good measure.

As we all know, 52 cards make up a deck and whatever 5 cards are dealt out, one of those will always win. You could be looking at a completely awful hand of a pair of 2s, or even an A high, but whatever they are, one will always win. This is the wonderful world of poker, not knowing which hands are going to win the game.

When dealt cards you must first decide whether they are suitable to your style of play. Then the decision is whether to fold, call or raise the big blind.

Every individual player has their own style of playing. Some players will only play face cards, whereas others will play any card given to them. That is a style of play. I know of many players who will play nearly every hand pre-flop as long as the bet is within their comfort zone.

Once the flop is seen, it becomes more interesting and a bigger decision needing to be made. If you are holding 3 4 off suit and the flop shows AKJ, what is the likelihood that you will continue with the hand? I would imagine you would fold, unless it is a check through until the turn card is shown.

No poker player is the same, and its important to remember that you can never bee 100% sure how each player will play a hand. There could very well be someone holding 3 4 offsuit and try to bluff and bet big once the flop is shown. I, for one, would never attempt that with such low cards, but I have seen it happen, it’s a great mystery of how others play!

For this reason, it is essential that you study each of your opponents where possible before sitting down with them at a table. You should be able to grasp enough information about their game play to figure out their moves when playing them.

Does that always work to your advantage you may ask yourself. Well, the answer would be no. As I stated earlier, any given 5 cards will win a hand and they may very well be holding Q 10 and flopped a straight. But the odds are in your favor to predict certain scenarios after learning others’ style of play.

Always be observant, never just assume someone is bluffing, and most important, remember to play your game. Your style of play is ultimately what you must rely on to win in poker so be sure to practice and refine in free poker online freerolls before moving up to cash games.

Shining Cuckoo Clock

Shining Cuckoo Clock (Image courtesy Chris Dimino)
By Andrew Liszewski

In general I find cuckoo clocks to be kind of creepy and disturbing, with that little obsessive compulsive bird that has to pop out every hour on the hour, but this one takes it to a whole new level. It’s a miniature diorama of the famous “Heeere’s Johnny!” scene from The Shining, but instead of a little bird making an appearance every hour, it’s a little Jack Nicholson who breaks through the door with his famous catch line. And if that’s not creepy enough, there’s also a miniature terrorized Shelly Duvall there for good measure, who follows up with a blood-curdling scream… every hour.

The clock was created by Chris Dimino, who thankfully doesn’t seem to have any intentions of mass producing it.

Alphie’s Back – Now With More Expressions!

Alphie II was another one of those 80’s toys I never owned, but it still brings back fond memories of my childhood. It was a robot-looking learning toy that used index cards and a series of buttons to teach math, colors and other basic skills, with a healthy mix of robotic sound effects thrown in for good measure. Now those of you who owned an Alphie II might have assumed he died a slow death buried in the back of your closet, but it turns out he’s back! And slightly better than ever!

The new Alphie’s biggest upgrade is an LCD display where his light-up eyes used to be, providing him with a wider range of facial expressions instead of just the goofy grin of his predecessors. He’s also learned to talk, though the upgrades seem to stop there since he’s apparently still content to rely on buttons and index cards which teach everything from the alphabet to rhyming to animal names and countless other preschool-friendly lessons. He’ll be available sometime in the Fall for $39.99 and will come with 30 double-sided index cards which include over 350 questions and challenges.
