For all those who are now beyond their teenage years, video games are something that we have lived and grown up with. Most of the legendary Video Games were released in front of our eyes and every single one of them shared an experience that is indefinable. First it used to be Atari and arcades with games such as Pole position, Outrun and Test drive but during the 90s, the graphics and game play gradually increasingly enhanced. Years passed and eventually we grew up to buy a real car from some New Jersey Chevrolet Dealer. Yet, that car from NJ Chevy dealer wasn’t any match with the experience we had with our joysticks.

There are uncountable numbers of auto-driving games up till now, but there are only some which left a mark on our memories and actually revolutionized the whole usual driving game experience. It is not deniable that the 80s and early 90s games are still the real pioneers that ignited it all but this article discusses games that were released after the mid 90s and added gear to the whole auto experience. Let us take a look at four famous games that didn’t just depend on ordinary racing strategy, but made gaming even more fun.

Need For Speed

Simply said, this is the game that started it all. In the mid 90s, when every gamer was happy with arcade games, NFS showed us that it’s not all about driving on the track and being the winner. gamers had the option to select from real tracks and cars and also to unlock more tracks and cars as the game was played. It appeared like for the first time the game developers had seriously teamed up with automobile giants for such a venture.

Grand Theft Auto

A game which was not purely a driving game because the gamer was able to get out of the vehicle and play wth other things in the area. That is what made it a legend. The first game, although not very commendable regarding graphics and the cinematics, totally set new boundaries for a driving game. The the scenario was more exciting than ever and the gamer was able to halt the vehicle even during a mission, get out of the vehicle, steal some other vehicle and carry on with the mission. This gave players the flexibility needed to make games more exciting.

Gran Turismo

When this part cam out in 1997, there was hardly any driving/racing competitor which was good enough to meet its high graphics. Moreoevr, it had wonderful collection of cars and numerous customization options which could change the performance of the vehicle. The handling was also very realistic in comparision to other games of that time

Driver

There is truly no car driving/racing list complete without this legendary mention. Released in 1999, this game told us what the next generation automobile games were going to be like. There was a strong story line, characters and explorable towns in the game. Overall, it was a role playing driving game which made the players a part of the game and story.

Just a friendly reminder that Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City, the stand-alone pack of Grand Theft Auto IV DLC is now available for PCand PS3. As DLC goes, it’s not bad.

One word of caution for my PC gaming friends: it uses Games for Windows Live, which pretty much everyone on Planet Earth hates.

Just to clear up any confusion: the DLC (which includes both The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony) is available to download from the respective services (PSN, GfWL) if you already own GTA IV. If you don’t have the originial GTA IV, you can walk into your local store and buy the stand-alone disc, entitled Episodes From Liberty City.

Let’s see here… The Lost and Damned first came out on the Xbox 360 in February, 2009, so it’s been a little while.

There was another "are violent video games evil?" debate yesterday, this time on BBC Radio in the UK. (We sure do cover a lot of UK-centric news here, don't we?) A group called Mothers Against Violence, whose goal is the complete eradication of violence (OK...), debated games journalists, the radio show hosts, and the video game industry in general.
There was another “are violent video games evil?” debate yesterday, this time on BBC Radio in the UK. (We sure do cover a lot of UK-centric news here, don’t we?) A group called Mothers Against Violence, whose goal is the complete eradication of violence (OK…), debated games journalists, the radio show hosts, and the video game industry in general. The debate wasn’t as silly as you may automatically think, with the anti-violence group coming down on parents rather than violent video games in general. You know, “Be parents for once!”

The debate centered around Grand Theft Auto, as it so often does. (Incidentally, the debate was on BBC Radio Leeds, and Rockstar Leeds created the portable versions of GTA, including Chinatown Wars.) Ignorant questions like “Why is it OK to pick up and beat prostitutes but not normal civilians?” Of course you can, in fact, pick up anybody you want, and beat them up if you want to, but then you’re dealing with a wanted level.

Anyhow, the only real thing of substance that was said was that the Mothers Against Violence group didn’t claim that violent video games were destroying civilization itself, but implored parents to parent. If your kid is an immature brat, perhaps it’s not a good idea to buy him GTA or Whatever The Game for his birthday? Rockstar said as much, noting that its games are clearly and solely intended for adults, and that it submits all of its games to the proper ratings board for certification.

Video games didn’t invent violence, something that has been around, you know, forever.

Isn’t that right, Mr. Caveman?

Which is exactly why so many companies are exploring the world of sex based video games. For those old schoolers, you may remember games like Sierra’s Leisure Suit Larry Series, which was a computer adventure game about a guy trying to get lucky in any way possible. Of course we are talking about pixelated cartoonish sexual imagery but hey, back in the day this stuff was awesome! Certain game development companies continue to make straight out porn focused games, but there are also some ‘mainstream’ games including sex as part of a storyline like Heavy Rain, Mass Effect 2 (again), and the always controversial Grand Theft Auto series. With the advent of the video game rating system, it seems like mainstream games that really push the envelope are becoming less and less prevalent. Partly because any game slapped with an “AO” rating practically means suicide for the developer because no brick and mortar store will stock the game. With this move towards keeping our games clean, it seems almost counter intuitive to bring back sex video games a la Lesiure Suit Larry and Benny Hill. It’s a surprise to see new sex-based games hitting the market like Bonetown, Project X, and Digital Playground’s new 3D world, that bring players into a world where they can pretty much do whatever they want without judgement. All of these games feature well known porn stars (helllllooo, Ron Jeremy is in Bonetown), which is cool for fans because they can interact with them virtually like never before.

Unlike Bonetown and Project X, Digital Playground’s Utherverse focuses more on leisure and social networking rather than gaming. Users aren’t expected to complete missions or earn points, rather, they’re expected to roam around the world, have fun, and do all the things they can’t really do in real life (because unless you’re Tommy Lee, it’s doubtful you’re hooking up with porn stars). The Utherverse creates a place for fans to interact and play, making this new genre of sex games a rule free social networking experience. “We don’t refer to the virtual world as a game, but rather as the 3D Web, or the Virtual World Web. It’s really is less of a game and more of the Internet in 3D. It’s a place where users come to have social networking in real time, to watch movies together, to shop for real-world goods and services, as well as virtual goods and services – but there is no objective,” said Brian Shuster of Utherverse. Basically the goal is to have sex, hook up, and do all the naughty things you can’t do in real life without getting yourself in trouble.

While Bonetown and Project X both feature well-known porn stars, Digital Playground’s Utherverse is the first game to feature all Digital Playground branded pictures, videos, and characters, possibly marking a new frontier for porn. Aside from screenings of their DP porns, the game features the contract star, Raven Alexis, a self-professed geek and WoW gamer. For Raven, this new avenue is an obvious choice, “It’s been so cool and exciting so far, getting to know the ins and outs of the game took a little while, and I’ve already met some amazing people. I don’t think that Digital Playground could be teamed up with a better company to begin putting virtual characters of their contract girls into a game.”

The technology behind this emerging trend is what’s really interesting. Utherverse, the company that created Digital Playground’s 3D world explained that the creation of virtual worlds can take upwards of four years and cost up to 10 million dollars. Utherverse took the technology that goes into making these games and created a tool set and prop editor that allows companies to completely customized and create their own world without much coding or time. The way it works is that a company will choose from basic landscape and surroundings and then can further customize with a prop editor, cutting down on time and making the world of 3D games available to many companies. “The prop-editor also allows the user to pull images from the web, web pages, flash object, flash streams or any of the scripts that need to go onto objects. Scripts can include a wide range of tools, including the ability to inter-link objects, so that when a user clicks, they are transported from one are of the virtual world to another, or from one world to another.” For Digital Playground, this meant that they would import lots of fun things like videos, pictures, and toys.

Raven was also able to create her own character in the game, “I did make my own character, which took about a week in total – and she has all kinds of customized outfits that she can wear. For a gamer, it was completely fun for me, and I’m totally addicted to this game! I’ve already been told by many people in game that my character looks just like me!”

The world of online sex games marks a new chapter for the adult industry. Where previously adult stars were only able to interact with their friends through video and a hand full of in-person appearances, companies are now exploring different ways like online games. Are the family collations like MAVAV, Mothers Against Videogame Addiction and Violence that complain about games like Grand Theft Auto going to come after these truly hardcore sex focused video games? Only time will tell.

Yup, perpetuating the idea that Doom = violent video games

What do I know about Australia? Not much—I know Jim Jeffries is from there. In recent years, Australia to me has always been associated with weird censorship and video games being banned left and right. Those days may soon be behind us, as Australia seems to be inching closer toward an R18+ rating for video games. That would mean that, instead of outright banning violent games, they could only be sold to adults. Pretty shocking that it has taken until 2010 for that to be the case, but what are you gonna do?

So the deal is that, thanks to the resignation of a well-known stick-in-the-mud attorney general down there, Australia could be on its way to finally introducing the much-needed R18+ video game rating. It’d be analogous to the ESRB’s M rating in that games carrying said rating can only be sold to people 17 and older. (Kids younger than 17 know to get their older brother, or the friend’s older brother, or their parents for that matter to buy said games for them.)

Society has deemed that you need to be 17 years old to play Grand Theft Auto and God of War just like you have to be 18 to buy cigarettes and 21 to buy alcohol. Granted, at 18 you can sign up for the military, but you’re not allowed to walk into a 7 Eleven and buy a can of beer. But that’s a hack argument for some local talk radio show.

Anyhow, in Australia the age is 18. Well, would be 18, provided all the Ts are crossed and Is are dotted.

Someday soon our Australian brothers will be able to walk into Big Store and walk out with an uncensored copy of Left 4 Dead II. That’s the dream, at least.

The original rundown for today's episode of The 404 Podcast started with a bunch of stories about tech-related violence, but we decided to scrap all that for a more positive show. And we're also putting Wilson on a temporary story time-out for the next few days so this doesn't happen again.

Jeff is particularly excited about this first story, because it involves two of his close loves: video games and Playboy bunnies. This fall, Take Two Interactive is partnering with Playboy on Mafia II, a mature video game that lets you play as a gangster in the 1940s and '50s. The game is replete with vintage Playboy magazines and, of course, the centerfolds. Before you start writing your local government reps, keep in mind that the images are tastefully integrated into the game's nostalgia, which also includes vintage cars and firearms to invoke the 1940s zeitgeist. Additionally, the scenes in question are fairly tame compared with another Take Two game series, "Grand Theft Auto." Remember the Hot Coffee mod in GTA: San Andreas?

The 404 prides itself on keeping up to date on pop culture trends, but the newest fad among teenage girls is churning our stomachs. Across the country, the newest thing is to get intoxicated by an alternative form of ingestion. We'll spare you the details in this blog, because my physical demonstration in the video makes it so much easier to digest. This is why we're absolutely terrified of having kids.

Now that spring has finally decided to visit New York, it's time for backyard BBQs, rooftop parties, and bikes rides! New York certainly isn't the easiest city to navigate on a bicycle, but Google Maps is now offering a cycling navigation feature to guide you along your way.

The directions route you through to your destination by cross-referencing the least busiest streets with the ones that have clearly defined bike lanes, getting you there faster and, most importantly, in one piece. Once you get to your destination, however, be sure to do everything you can to minimize the chance of theft.

In perhaps its first practical application, local New York bike messenger Austin Horse successfully recovered his stolen bike using Twitter. After someone snatched his bike, Horse immediately notified his followers to keep a lookout (not too difficult a task, as the frame is bright orange) and posted the same to a local message board. In less than 24 hours, someone recovered his vehicle in the Lower East Side and it's now back with its rightful owner--great news!

Keep sending us voice mails to 1-866-404-CNET because you know we love to hear how you're doing, and don't forget to send in your 404 sticker pictures to the404(at)cnet[dot]com. High quality shots have a good chance of making it to a blog post, like the one you see up there from our buddy Derrick Chen. Natali Del Conte on the show tomorrow, so be sure to catch us live at 11 a.m. EST/8 a.m. PST on CNET TV.

The explosion of casual gaming over the last few years, primed by companies like PopCap and touched off by Nintendo's incredibly accessible Wii, has put gaming firmly in the mainstream. Halo, Grand Theft Auto, and other AAA games, while not by any stretch of the imagination "casual," end up selling in the tens of millions of units, resulting in billions of dollars in revenue. Nintendo employees were said to generate more money per employee than Goldman Sachs, and the growth of the industry was barely hampered by recession. Despite all this, there is still a double misapprehension about the gaming world: "non-gamers" think games are for gamers, and "gamers" think games are... well, for them.

The reality is that games have reached the point where games are simply a product, easily divisible into categories the way TV shows and movies, and indeed things like cameras and microwaves are. Games used to be made for gamers, and money was a pleasant by-product. Now the game is a pleasant by-product of the money-making process. And the DSi XL is a perfect exemplar of this new situation.

Games used to be made for gamers, and money was a pleasant by-product. Now the game is a pleasant by-product of the money-making process. And the DSi XL is a perfect exemplar of this new situation.

Later this month, Nintendo will be shipping the device, essentially a super-sized DSi; it will be the fourth iteration of the insanely popular handheld gaming console. The question brought up by Nintendo fans when it was announced was obvious: who asked for this? The DSi was just recently released, with a slightly larger and brighter screen than its predecessor, the DS Lite, and along with its new online store and dual cameras, it seemed to be an improvement people could get behind. But 4.2-inch screens? A chubby stylus that doesn’t conceal itself in the device? An e-book reader? The collective fanboy mind boggled. And for good reason.

There are stories, probably not true, of Native Americans seeing ships on the horizon but not seeing them, because the idea of ships like that existing didn’t fit in to their worldview. Well. I think we can safely say that the braves around Plymouth Rock saw the enormous galleons, but like today’s fanboys, their minds refused to recognize the import of what was happening. In the case of the braves, it meant annihilation; for the fanboys, it means marginalization — which, to the fanboy, is worse than annihilation.

See, gaming has always been somewhat of a closed community. Kids born after 1975, growing up playing Atari and NES, and went on to adulthood with gaming as much a part of their life as movies or TV — but often more so, because everyone watches TV, but gaming was like a club. Nobody cared if you watched CBS or NBC, but whether you were a SNES or Genesis kid was of huge importance. And people who didn’t play games — well!

The insider culture persists to this day, but the actual distinction is disintegrating around them (that is to say, us). Even when casual games and “hardcore” games alike were selling millions of units, gamers could convince themselves that games were still being made for them, but more people were just “getting into it.” But aside from a few notable exceptions like Valve, some indie kids, and niche developers, that’s simply not the case any more. Games are being created to attract as great an audience as possible without completely compromising the content. Like it or not, Modern Warfare 2 is the Titanic of the gaming world.

But I digress. What does the DSi XL have to do with any of this? Think of it this way (in another digression). Once upon a time, Mohamed went to the mountain. That was when gamers at heart, raised on old-school gaming prohibitive to the masses in both price and playability, were the audience. But recently, an invisible line was crossed. And now Nintendo is bringing the mountain to Mohamed. Because Mohamed has poor eyesight and needed a bigger mountain brought to him. See?

Look, the point is this: the DSi XL is a symbol of the final step in the little progression I’ve illustrated here:

Once the non-gamer community is not only compatible with the gaming industry, but actively designed for, then you can be absolutely sure that gaming is no longer a gamer’s game. Even things like the Wii Fit weren’t specifically designed for a subset of people who were unreachable by Nintendo. The DSi XL is exactly that: a product made just for people who not only don’t, but could not play Nintendo games.

What does it mean? Well, one thing it doesn’t mean is there will no longer be good games or anything like that. Movies were never a closed community — they were created as mass entertainment and are to this day, yet no one would say that moviemaking (or moviegoing) is dead, drowned in the mainstream. Furthermore, the medium is equally open to arthouse flicks and weird shorts as it is to blockbusters and B-movies. Movie fans would agree on is that the medium was not made for one or the other — and, significantly, you don’t have to love one to love the other. That hasn’t been the case for games until recently, but soon it’ll have to be. What the DSi XL signifies is that gaming has gotten bigger than gamers. The writing’s been on the wall for some time but now it’s on the billboards as well.

For a time, there will remain the “true gamer” argument: the only true gamers are the ones who can beat Contra on three lives, or can wall-jump to the roof of the castle in Super Mario 64. But sooner or later, it will have to be accepted by the gaming community that true gamers are just a market segment, and an increasingly small one at that. It’s sad, isn’t it — but it’s bittersweet, like an empty nest. We’ve watched our baby grow up from a Pong paddle and monochrome vector screen to the photorealistic, politically inflammable, yet accessible-by-grandma chimaera of present day.

The sooner we “true gamers” accept that the world of gaming now encompasses our non-gamer friends, our family, and a billion other people who never knew the joy of Gradius, the sooner we can move on — and start playing again.

The explosion of casual gaming over the last few years, primed by companies like PopCap and touched off by Nintendo’s incredibly accessible Wii, has put gaming firmly in the mainstream. Halo, Grand Theft Auto, and other AAA games, while not by any stretch of the imagination “casual,” end up selling in the tens of millions of units, resulting in billions of dollars in revenue. Despite all this, there is still a double misapprehension about the gaming world: “non-gamers” think games are for gamers, and “gamers” think games are… well, for them.
