The opening of the Panama Canal was a disaster for Midwestern farmers. So, in 1930 the US government set about deepening the Mississippi River to improve its cargo traffic capabilities. 79 years later, one dredger is still on the job. More »

At last the long awaited day of my life had appeared! For the past two and a half years I was saving my wage to buy a four wheel vehicle for myself, one that could carry six of us, that involves me and my five friends, for our weekend trips.

I shortlisted a couple of vehicles from the long list of 6 seater vehicles. My parents asked me to search for 6 seater cars, but majority of the so called 6 seater cars out there could hardly accommodate the huge bulk of my three friends in the rear seat. Therefore I ended up with 2 off-roaders that can easily accommodate six people, and also our weekend accessories like tents, mountain bike etc.

The number one on the list was Mahindra Thar, a classic 4-wheeler, with soft top that can be removed when needed. The next one was an SUV known as Sumo from the stables of Tata. I know both of them belong to different classes, but their price tag compelled me to shortlist them. The former came at a price tag of $12000 and the second at $13000, a huge difference of $1000.

Thar appeared more aggressive and was an extremely capable off-roader. On the other hand Sumo looked more like a family man’s vehicle and was not that good as Thar in off-roading. My heart was moved towards Thar, because I always had this passion for classic vehicles in me. I was confused between the two, my family was more leaning towards the Sumo and my love for jeep was burning inside me.

Then all of a sudden my Grandpa’s face came into my mind, he was a brilliant traveller and did travel from Leh to Kanyakumari, the whole length of India from North to South in his Royal Enfield. He always said “pursue what your heart desires, and you will never regret”, and that shed light into my perplexed darkness.

I chose to go for the Mahindra Thar, and turned out customising it for another thousand dollars and now she looks more stunning than a Mercedes! The following week we moved straight to Mysore via Munnar and Ooty, and conquered all the peaks in South India. Now the six of us are planning for an Himalayan trip, following the trails left behind by my beloved Grandpa.

Basic 101: Your vehicle is your life

Naturally you can likewise go offroading with a beat-up ancient truck your grandpa made do to transport fertilizer, but you certainly will not go far. And, you would possibly return walking. So if you want some pleasurable offroading trip, get your vehicle in excellent condition especially its engine, frame and springs. Getting% LINK1% is also a positive plus, and using lift kits is positive plus-plus, as they are specifically manufactured for offroad driving. Making your vehicle dependable is the first requirement of offroading, because your life is dependent on it while on the trip.

Basic 102: Get dirty easy

Seek an area offroad that consists of a dirt road, a small hill or two, mud or waterhole, ruts, gravel and passable rocks, where you can discern how your vehicle handles. Move to 4-low and drive slowly over the obstacles, keeping your speed under five mph. Choose your route mentally and put the wheels where you want them for best traction. This is called picking the line and it just means you must choose the most passable path around or over the obstacles. Be aware of the manner the vehicle responds while you are crossing the hazards, so you can expect them later.

Basic 103: It could be’ muddlin’

Mud is slick, wet and constantly moves even without your say-so, so as much as you can go about the mudhole. If you cannot, choose a line through the lowest, firmest part you can see and try driving through in 4-low with 3rd or 4th gear in use. The plan is to go fast enough that there is inertia and you do not bog down , but slow enough to be in control. Move fast and you could intake water, too slow and you might sink and get bogged down. But if you did get bogged down, back up the way you came in, wiggling the steering wheel and with enough power to get the mud off the tire tread. Otherwise dig the vehicle out of the mud.

Basic 104: Offroading on the rocks

Deemed the most demanding form, scrambling over the rock piles really tests your vehicle and your capabilities. But there are methods. First, bring down your tire pressure to about half that of normal road driving for better traction. Examine the bottom for any part that may get damaged if {dragged|hauled| over the rocks as well as prompt you of the ground {clearance|height]. Scout your way to pick your line and then change to 4-low or first gear. Drive over your route slowly, ears pricked up all the while for the sound of slipping tires or the stone dinging your under carriage. If it becomes too arduous, back up and seek another way.

Basic 105: Storming the Sand

The sand is looser during the day and thus more tricky to drive on. Braking and swerving take longer distances so try to compensate. Momentum can help you traverse difficult passages]; thus, go in 4-Hi and gear in Drive, running at 10-15 mph, tires deflated to half its normal pressure for footing and to ‘float’ them. Park it on firmer parts of the sand and face downhill for [easier departure. When you are spinning tires but not progressing, stop and reverse up.

Quitting smoking is the hardest commitment you will ever make in your entire life. I know this because I’ve quit a lot of bad habits, including addiction to alcohol, and quitting smoking was by far the most difficult.

Did I say commitment? You may be thinking, “Whoa now, quitting smoking sounds too hard if I have to make a commitment”.

I quit smoking four times before I “really” quit smoking. This is what usually happens with smokers. They want to quit but they really don’t want to quit. So when they quit they start smoking again. They never set it in their mind to “really” quit.

So what are the differences between the person who does quit for good and the person who quits only to go back to it again? Absolutely nothing, except the person who “really” quit set it in their mind to quit – they truly knew they would quit even before they quit. Ask anyone who has ever quit, they’ll tell you the same thing. Blu Electronic Cigarette

Each person who has ever quit smoking permanently had this strong conviction to never go back to the smelly, stinking, rotten, cancer ridden cigarettes again!

You can do that too. You can actually tell your self for two months straight how much you hate cigarettes and how bad they are for your health and that you are going to quit, at such and such time, and you will quit. The reason is because your mind told you so.

On the day when I finally “really” quit, I posted messages and affirmations on index cards throughout my home. I posted one on my mirror in the bathroom, it said, “I will quit smoking today and live longer because of it.” The one on my refrigerator read, “My boys want me to quit smoking because they love me, I can quit for my sons because I love them”

I used to smoke outside on my patio. That was the hardest place to be without having a cigarette. My posted message there read, “My aunt died of lung cancer because she smoked, and my Grandpa died of Emphysema because he smoked, I don’t want to die because I smoke.” Blu Electronic Cigarette

“After years of trying, I finally Quit Smoking with Blu Electronic Cigarette!

Now I live healthier and smoke ? Electronic Cigarette“

Product Description

Genre: Family
Rating: G
Release Date: 2-DEC-2008
Media Type: DVDAmazon.com
A digital 3D presentation that wows viewers with striking 3D effects, Fly Me to the Moon is a retelling of the 1969 Apollo 11 landing on the moon from the perspective of three young flies that allegedly hitched a ride on the historic flight. Nat, IQ, and Scooter live by the credo “If it’s not an adventure, it’s not worth doing,” so when the three flies get a chance to sneak aboard the space shuttle for a ride to the moon, all systems are definitely go. While Grandpa McFly and Nat’s young maggot siblings applaud the boys’ adventuresome spirits, their mothers stereotypically swoon and fret over their safety. The flies encounter several unanticipated twists including the trip’s week-long duration, a short in the ship’s circuitry, a Russian fly plot to sabotage their mission, and their mid-flight imprisonment in a test tube.
In my grandpa’s attic you will find, among other things, 40 years worth of National Geographic Magazine. Let me tell you, that takes up a lot of room. If you’re looking for something very specific in one of the issues, you can bet that it’s going to take a little while to find (mostly because they’re all stored in boxes). Of course if you want the information from every single issue right at your fingertips, there is a much better way to do it.

National Geographic has decided to release the content from every single issue (starting way back in 1888) in a convenient digital format. Every map, photo and article is contained on a special 160GB hard drive. Surprisingly, it only takes up 60GB, so they’ve setup the drive to have an extra 100GB partition to store your own personal files. There’s also a bonus DVD which contains tips on taking better photographs and a behind-the-scenes look at how National Geographic is put together. At $200, this is no doubt worth every penny.

Aside from the $200 price tag, it’s actually not a bad idea. It’s a digital photo frame with an integrated 4×6 photo scanner.

You can also dump pictures onto the frame the old fashioned (new fashioned?) way via memory card or USB connection. The frame itself features an 8-inch LCD, 1GB internal memory, calendar, clock, MPEG playback, and remote control.

The big draw, of course, is the scanner, which Hammacher Schlemmer says works “as easily as feeding bills into a vending machine.” Vending machines also being scary to old people.

Basic 101: Your vehicle is your being

Naturally you can likewise go offroading with a run down ancient truck your grandpa used to transport fertilizer, but you surely will not go far. And, you would probably return on foot. So if you want some enjoyable offroading trip, get your vehicle in tip-top condition particularly its engine, chassis and suspension. Getting% LINK1% is also a positive plus, and using lift kits is positive plus-plus, as they are specifically manufactured for offroad adventuring. Making your vehicle dependable is the first requirement of offroading, since your life is dependent on it while on the trip.

Basic 102: Get dirty gradually

Find a location offroad that contains a dirt road, a small hill or two, mud or waterhole, ruts, loose ground and passable rocks, where you can feel how your vehicle handles. Move to 4-low and drive slowly over the hazards, keeping your speed below five mph. Choose your route mentally and place the wheels on the line you want them for best traction. This is termed picking the line and it merely means you should choose the easiest path around or over the obstacles. Be aware of the manner the vehicle responds while you are crossing the hazards, so you can anticipate them later.

Basic 103: It can be’muddening’

Mud is slippery, wet and constantly moves even without your say-so, so as much as possible go about the mudhole. If you cannot, pick a line via the shallowest, firmest part you can determine and try going through in 4-low with 3rd or 4th gear in use. The plan is to go fast enough that there is inertia and you do not bog down , but slow enough to remain in control. Too fast and you could intake water, drive slow and you can sink and get stuck. But if you do get stuck, reverse the way you came in, waggling the steering wheel and with sufficient wheel spin to get the mud off the tire tread. Otherwise dig the truck out of the mud.

Basic 104: Offroading on the rocks

Deemed the most challenging activity, scrambling over the rocks really tries your vehicle and your capabilities. But there are ways. First, lower your tire pressure to approximately half that of normal road driving for better traction. Examine the underside for any part that may get damaged if dragged as well as remind you of the ground height]. Explore your change to 4-low or first gear. Drive over your route slowly, ears pricked up all the while for the sound of slipping tires or the stone dinging your under carriage. If it becomes too arduous, back up and seek another way.

Basic 105: Bugging the Sand

The sand is more shifty during the day and thus more tricky to drive on. Braking and turning take longer distances so try to offset this. Inertia can help you get through problematic passages]; transmission in Drive, running at 10-15 mph, tires deflated to half its normal pressure for traction and to ‘float’ them. Park it on firmer parts of the sand and face downhill for [easier|trouble-free} departure. When you are turning tires but not moving, stop and back up.

While I’ve got news for you, Diego. My childhood rocking horse consisted of little more than some cheap springs, a whole lot of ass splinters, and general disappointment.

Aw, I’m just jealous. That’s why I’ve been so moody lately. It’s not Diego’s fault, he clearly has an awesome grandpa. And to be fair, my grandpa did buy me Castle Grayskull no questions asked when I was five. Can your Vespa rocking horse travel to Eternia, Diego? Oh, it just stays in one place? I see. Hmm, that’s unfortunate.
