In our days, a durable mobile phone is a great achievement. Even if almost all mobile phones are made from different resistant materials, these handsets can’t resist to brutal shocks or in an increased humidity. For those people who work or live in a hostile environment, Motorola has launched the AT&T the Motorola Tundra cell phone.

The Motorola Tundra cell phone is a military-spec phone which is designed to withstand a lot of crazy situations and harsh conditions. Before it was launched, it was tested in many extreme conditions such as high and low temperature, intense shocks, dripping rain, vibrations, humidity and dust, and we can say that it does a great job. In terms of design, the Motorola Tundra cell phone is certainly not a stylish handset. It comes with a resistant plastic “clamshell” case covered with a special rubber which makes this phone feel like it’s made of carbon fiber and Kevlar. With 98 x 53.8 x 24 mm in dimensions and 107 grams in weight, it is not one of the thinnest and lightest Motorola cell phones. An uncommon aspect for a modern mobile phone is that the Motorola Tundra cell phone comes with an external antenna. On the sides of this phone you will find a camera shutter, a miniUSB port, a volume rocker and a Push-to-Talk button (which is large and can be a bit embarrassing if you don’t use the Push-to-Talk function).

When you open the cell phone, you will find a 2.2 inch TFT display which has a native resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. This display supports 256K colors and will offer you clear images with true colors and a good contrast. We almost forgot to mention that this mobile phone has a secondary 1.05 inch external display which has a native resolution of 96 x 80 pixels. On this display you will see a clock and date and the signal and battery levels. The numerical pad is typical AT&T style. The keys are large, easy to press and each one has a slightly raised design. Being very responsive and offering a positive feedback, you will be able to write on them even in an emergency situation. Why is this numerical pad in the typical AT&T style? Well, besides the numerical keys and the menu navigation buttons (including two soft keys, a D-pad and the usual Call and End keys), there are two other dedicated keys: Cellular Video shortcuts and one for AT&T Media Net. The Motorola Tundra cell phone doesn’t lack a camera. It comes with an integrated 2 Megapixel camera capable of taking photos at a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels. This camera is placed on the external face, above the display.

For connectivity, the Motorola Tundra cell phone comes with GPS, Push-to-Talk, 3G support, GPRS and EDGE. For connecting with a PC or other devices it has a USB port and Bluetooth. Even if this mobile phone has not been designed for music listeners or photography fans, it comes with 100 MB of internal memory which can be extended up to 4 GB with a microSD card. The battery is another very important aspect for this cell phone. The standard Li-Ion 1130 mAh battery is capable of keeping this handset on for almost 5 hours and 20 minutes of conversations and up to 480 hours in standby mode. Overall, we are satisfied with the Motorola Tundra cell phone. It has proven to be very resistant and even if it has a low price ($179.99), it is capable to offer you enough technology to be proud of it.

No longer is how deep you can dive while wearing it the benchmark for a well-made watch. Seiko’s raised the bar with their Spring Drive Spacewalk Watch which was specifically designed to withstand the extreme temperatures, pressures and radiation involved with taking an EVA or ‘extra-vehicular activity’ spacewalk. It was first worn by private space adventurer Richard Garriott back in October of 2008 who spent 12 days at the ISS, and was subsequently worn a few months later by a Russian cosmonaut on an actual 5 hour and 38 minute spacewalk, on the outside of his suit, performing flawlessly the entire time.

So to celebrate its success, Seiko is making a limited edition version of the watch available to the public. Made of lightweight titanium the watch doesn’t actually have a lot of features to justify its $28,000 price tag, besides a chronograph, date function and oh, the ability to survive the harsh conditions of space! The run is being limited to just 100 pieces, which is probably a safe bet given the price tag, but I’m sure they’ll still sell out.

You can never know the situations you’ll have the chance or, on the other hand, the misfortune, to experience in a lifetime, so it’s necessary for you to always be as cautious as possible. You can never know when you’ll be in the position to need a wearable keyboard, but if it will ever happen to you such thing, you shouldn’t worry, because the guys over iKey have already taken care of this aspect.

They came up with the AK-39 keyboard, which can be worn by those who need it, on the arm. This is what they call a human interface device (also known as HID). A great thing about it is the fact that it comes in a rugged outfit, which means it meets the MIL-461 standards. In consequence, you can always use the keyboard in harsh conditions and you can be sure of the fact it won’t mind.

The device comes with a pointing device that is based on the technology known as Force Sensing Resistor (FSR), having a left and right-button functionality, and with a green LED backlighting that can be adjusted. The latter is equipped with night vision compatibility.

The keyboard measures no more than 6.91 x 3.06 x 0.81 inches and comes with 39-key pad. It is resistant to all sorts of factors, such as water, debris and dust, and it’s able to function between -40 and +70 degrees Celsius.

“The AK-39 is the most functional and versatile wearable keyboard available with robust EMI performance” said Pete Fuselier, the Engineering Manager at iKey. “And because it is designed and built to the high standards of iKey products, it is ruggedized to withstand harsh environmental conditions, such as rain, dirt and extreme temperatures”.
