Beta $25 Raspberry Pi computers fetching exorbitant sums (for charity) on eBay

Posted by on Thursday, 5 January, 2012

Those diminutive Raspberry Pi computers are finally set to launch later this month — if you absolutely can’t wait to get your grubby paws on one, however, good news: you can pick one up early at auction, if you’re willing to pay a little extra. The foundation behind the ultra-budget educational computers is giving buyers a head start, listing beta boards up on eBay. At present, the top spot belongs to beta board number 10, which is currently cruising at around £2,100.00, with about two days left at auction. If you’re lucky, however, the low-end number five, which is currently priced at around £620, shouldn’t increase too much in the next four days or so. And look on the bright side, all the money is going to charity here, so you can’t feel too bad about yourself. Right?

Google Fiber puts boots on the ground, begins detail engineering in Kansas Cities

Posted by on Thursday, 28 July, 2011

We’ve come a long way since Google first started taking about launching a fiber-based ISP — from beta tests, to hopeful communities, to Topeka fools day, to selecting not one, but two Kansas Cities. Now, it’s “boots on the ground,” time according to the Google Fiber blog: detail engineering starts now. In the coming weeks, Kansas City residents (presumably on both sides of the Kansas / Missouri border) can expect to see El Goog’s engineers measuring phone poles, gathering geographical data, and asking hard-hitting questions, like “What is your address?” All this footwork will help Google get a head start on building that sweet, ultra-high-speed gigabit network. Not the most glamorous bit of Google magic we’ve ever seen, but it’s still exciting to hear that preliminary work has begun. Of course, it would be even more exciting if this were coming where we lived.

How Young Children Can Benefit From Computer Games

Posted by on Wednesday, 9 March, 2011

There is a lot of evidence that suggests that computer games are good for young children. This news will likely reassure parents who worry that these video games could be damaging in some way to young minds. However moderation is the key just like with everything else and something you need to bear in mind is that while there are many games that will benefit young children, other games will just not be suitable at all. The following are some of the reasons why some computer games will benefit young children.

- There are many games that are educational in nature. Nobody will deny that children find it easier to learn when things are presented to them in a fun way. Computer games can help children to learn new skills and knowledge and the best thing of all is that they don’t even realise that they are learning. Computer games can make it much easier to teach a broad area of knowledge to children; there are new games introduced all the time widening these areas even more.

- A lot of video games are great for encouraging hand eye coordination and this is important in lots of areas of our life. The best thing about this is that children become more dextrous with their hands as they get older.

- Lack of activity is one of the biggest problems that parents have these days with their children playing computer games. The good news is that there are now many games that encourage movement and can even be used for creating physical fitness.

- Being able to use a computer is vital for almost everyone joining the workforce. Children that have been introduced to computers at a young age are going to have a head start.

So if your child likes playing computer games, the reasons above will put your mind at rest.

CrunchDeals: 50 piece Chicken McNuggets bucket for $10 this weekend

Posted by on Friday, 5 February, 2010

Now THAT is a lot of Chicken McNuggets. Like, so many that the Hamburglar might actually consider a) switching briefly to chicken instead of hamburgers and b) paying the $10 instead of going to all the trouble of trying to conceal a gigantic bucket of chicken under his cape.

And just to give you a head start, you’ll apparently be able to get this deal starting tomorrow even though it’s a loose tie-in with the Super Bowl. So, tomorrow and Sunday, 50 Chicken McNuggets for $10. In a huge bucket. To share with others, hopefully.

The 404 Podcast 504: Where we’d buy that for a dollar

Straight from the CNET vineyards.

Wilson is supposedly out sick this morning and can’t be on the show, but it’s obvious to Jeff and me that he wanted a head start on Wednesday’s Apple Event. Either way, we’re happy to have CNET’s Smartphone Senior Editor Bonnie Cha here to replace him. We casually discuss our weekends in the first half of the show, which include some serious headphone shopping and a viewing of the documentary “Anvil.” Bonnie also tells us about her weekend run-in with the new cast members of MTV’s Jersey Shore.

With the January 27 Apple Event just around the corner, speculation about the Apple tablet is reaching critical mass, but an interesting Call From the Public raises new questions about the possibility of an Apple gaming console.

Judging from the amount of gaming press in attendance, there’s a solid chance that the hardware will be gaming-friendly, but the chance of Apple unveiling a gaming-only console is slim. If anything, we’re predicting a strong push toward gaming development on the new platform.

Thanks to everyone who sent in photos of their strategically placed 404 stickers and tattoos! Keep them coming, or be sure to listen to the promo in the break for how you can get your own merch.
