Mr. Blurrycam bags a silvery striped smartphone — is this the HTC Pyramid?

Posted by on Sunday, 20 March, 2011

Looks like our favorite anonymous globetrotting photographer’s spotted something sweet — it’s that alleged HTC Pyramid, comfortably chilling with the 4.3-inch HTC Desire HD. Unfortunately, Mr. Blurrycam only had time to snap this single shot before vanishing to parts unknown, so all we can tell is that that it’s sporting a flush, off-center camera with a twin-LED flash, a headset jack up top, and that it’s a fairly large, curvy phone. Don’t be disappointed, though — we imagine we’ll see a good bit more of the handset this week at a little Florida show.

The Motorola Cliq: A social media Android smartphone powered by MOTOBLUR

Posted by on Thursday, 10 September, 2009

The Cliq might be the first Motorola device with Android, but with a 350-person team, it better be good. At least it looks solid on the surface with a custom Android GUI called MOTOBLUR, slide-down keyboard, 5MP camera, 24 FPS video cam, WiFi, 3.5mm headset jack and a screen that better be able to handle a massive amount of info.

Backpack cooler bag features solar charging and built-in speakers

cooladio

What fun is going to the beach if you can’t bring a half-dozen portable electronic devices along with you? And let’s not forget how difficult it is to keep all those juice boxes cool. Yes, I said juice boxes. Drinking beer in the daytime makes me sleepy. Anyhoo, this bag features solar charging, speakers, and it’s insulated to keep your favorite libations cold.

At $85, the Picnic Plus Cooladio Solar Cooler is a bit on the pricey side, but maybe you happen to be pricing coolers, backpacks, solar chargers, and external speaker sets simultaneously. Let’s see what Sports Authority has to say about this product:

The Cooladio solar cooler from Picnic Plus is a thermal foil-insulated cooler and a solar-power docking station in one! You can plug in anything that needs charging or power – such as your cell phone or MP3 player – and keep your food and drinks cold at the same time! The Cooladio delivers on sound performance as well, with 2 speakers that offer crisp highs and thundering lows. There’s even a headset jack so you can enjoy your music in privacy.

Both crisp highs AND thundering lows? Oh my, please be careful. Those speakers do indeed look crisp and thunderous.

Nokia E52 is a Pricier E51 Refresh

Posted by on Monday, 24 August, 2009

Take the E51 (a great candybar phone with a comprehensive feature set) add a better battery, a higher-resolution camera, a standard 3.5mm audio jack, faster over-the-air connectivity, and microUSB support. What do you get? The Nokia E52 of course!

The successor refresh comes at a cost though. While the older E51 hovered around the $200-range, the E52 pushes the price point to around $350 (both prices for unlocked, contract-free phones). The E52 is available in “Metal Grey Aluminum” or “Golden Aluminum”, versus the E51’s metal black.

Nokia E52 Nokia E51
Services Full Ovi services suite
Dimensions 116 x 49 x 9.9mm 115 x 47 x 9mm
Standby time Up to 28 days Up to 13 days
Talk time Up to 8 hours Up to 4.4 hours
Networks HSDPA/HSUPA WCDMA
A-GPS Yes No
USB charging Yes No
Display 320×240 240×320
Camera 3.2 Mpix 2.0 Mpix
Headset jack Standard 3.5 mm Proprietary

Unless E51 users want faster cellular connectivity, it seems doubtful if upgrading E52 is worth the additional $150. The newer phone might attract new buyers, but current E51 users will probably remain content with what they have. In any case, buyers should also consider the Nokia E63. It features practically the same functionality as the E51, while boasting an easier-to-use QWERTY keyboard. The E51 should also see a price drop as Nokia retailers seek to clear old stocks.

Samsung MyShot II Review

Posted by on Friday, 10 July, 2009

Samsung MyShot IIMy Samsung MyShot II review: The Samsung MyShot II is a fairly simple flip-phone for Cricket Wireless. The style of the handset is actually quite attractive and the controls are easy to use. It comes in a maroon & black combo color. The exterior screen isn’t that great, but you do get a decent sized (2.1″) inner display. The call quality is above average for phones that are in its price range.

A couple of the Samsung MyShot II’s most notable features include: a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0, 2.5mm headset jack, speakerphone, MP3 player, GPS & microSD slot. You would think the 1.3 megapixel camera would take better photos, but it really isn’t that great. I think there are definitely more positives than negatives for this phone. Overall, it’s a pretty decent handset, with the exception of the camera & call volume.
