Survey says: Hollywood could make more money without windows

Posted by on Friday, 3 February, 2012

Surveys conducted and sponsored by research firm BTIG suggest that movie viewers might actually spend more money on films, if they were available online or on cable video-on-demand services at the same time as they are available in theaters. The post from BTIG’s Richard Greenfield (free registration required to view) details three different surveys conducted over the last few weeks, which asked respondents to forecast their theatrical and home entertainment spending if windows were to collapse.

All of the surveys leveraged Survey Monkey to poll respondents, but the most complete of the three polled the Survey Monkey Audience (SMA) network, racking up 1,124 responses. About 70 percent of respondents from the SMA survey said their spending on entertainment wouldn’t change if priced in the – range. But while the majority of users predict no change, the number who say they would spend more outnumber those who predict they would spend less by three to one.

According to Greenfield, that group appeared to be price-sensitive and more likely representative of today’s average consumer that respondents from the other surveys. Those who expected to spend more would be doing so because they saw cost savings from concessions and parking outweighing the difference in price and convenience of watching at home. In addition, some respondents suggested that they were unhappy with the current moviegoing experience.

In aggregate, the survey shows that Hollywood studios would likely make more revenue with the collapse of movie windows. More importantly, those sales would come with better margins since they wouldn’t be sharing with exhibitors. The fear seems to be that putting pressure on the theatrical window could cause some exhibitors to go out of business, which would in turn destroy that distribution channel.

Ask Engadget: Best HD LED Pico Projector for a small room?

Posted by on Sunday, 29 January, 2012
We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget inquiry is from Ellio, who fancies switching up his home entertainment kit with a HD LED projector. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.
“I’m looking to buy a small HD LED projector to use at home for movies and games etc. I’d prefer it to be small to avoid having another large black box cluttering up the place and LED because of the decent lifetime compared to traditional projectors. I’d be happy with a 720p resolution device, but a lot of pico projectors are under 30 lumens, is this level sufficient for a decent size-display in a dim room? Thanks a bunch!”

So, what’s it gonna be dear friends? If you don’t know the drill: it’s a jump to your left, a step to your right, put your hands on your hips and leave a comment below.

Warner Bros. closes HBO window ahead of UltraViolet launch

Posted by on Monday, 10 October, 2011

Warner Bros. has confirmed it will no longer be beholden to rights that would see its movies disappear from streaming sites while those titles are available on HBO and its HBO Go web and mobile applications. The closing of this so-called “HBO window” could go a long way toward making digital ownership of UltraViolet titles more appealing to consumers.

UltraViolet hopes to make digital ownership of movies more attractive, by allowing consumers to buy a title once and access it anywhere or on any device. One of the big questions revolving around the impending launch of UltraViolet streaming video services was whether or not studios would have to deal with the rights window, during which HBO has exclusive access to those titles online. Until recently, that meant movies purchased online couldn’t be accessed while HBO had pay TV rights to that content.

On a press briefing Monday afternoon ahead of the launch of the first UltraViolet-enabled title, Horrible Bosses, Warner Home Entertainment execs said that its movies won’t be subject to the HBO window. As a result, anyone who purchases a Warner Bros. DVD or Blu-ray disc won’t have to worry about losing access to the movie online or being blacked out once HBO gets ahold of it.

That doesn’t mean that HBO’s other studio partners — 20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures — aren’t still subject to the same restrictions. Warner Bros. execs wouldn’t comment on where its competitors stood with regards to whether or not HBO had streaming exclusive rights to their movies when they enter the pay TV window. Of course, Warner Bros. and HBO are both part of media conglomerate Time Warner, so their interests are more likely aligned than HBO would be with other studios.

The news that HBO has restructured its deal to allow Warner customers to stream its movies whenever comes at the same time that it is making a big digital push of its own. The premium cable network is making all its movies and original TV series available online, on mobile devices and on connected TV platforms through its HBO Go initiative. Part of Time Warner’s broader TV Everywhere push, HBO Go gives users the ability to access on-demand content as long as they prove that they’re cable subscribers.

Do Not Rush For Cheap Audio Shelf System, Think About Quality And Durability As Well

Posted by on Saturday, 13 November, 2010

In the growing market of today’s wide array of shelf stereo systems, it can be hard to come up with a proper decision of which shelf system is really the best considering warranty coverage, efficiency and durability, as well as the actual overall quality of the system itself.

To carry out this effectively so everybody is satisfied and the buyer doesn’t feel any sense of regret, it is imperative that in today’s market a consumer be fully satisfied with their product to continue a prolonged relationship of longevity and confidence with the supplier so that the buyer is able to keep a sense of selection for certain features that certain manufacturers convey over and over again in identical products.

What this means is that in order to be happy with your audio shelf system, you must first be happy with the manufacturers characteristic quality. So what exactly is characteristic quality? Simply said, they are attributes that make known the producers overall quality. For instance, Sony has always been a well-liked brand amongst more high budget customers, and while brands like RCA have maintained their quality in their line of products, in many opinions they are still not worth so much.

Why is this? Because RCA tends to have lower prices on audio shelf systems and other items with excellent quality, while Sony has a better image, and offers a longer company warranty, which ensures longevity of the product, but it comes with a price. This is when characteristic quality plays an important role in the common consumers mind.

If you were looking to buy a shelf system, lets say you see a 300 watt, RCA shelf stereo system for $150, and though it may be a great deal, there might be a 300 watt Sony system for $200, and because it is more costly than the RCA stereo, you want to buy the RCA shelf system. This is due to the characteristic quality of MSRP (Manufacturers suggested retail price). This means that your overall preference had nothing to do with the overall product, but simply the fact that it had better pricing.

Later you realize that RCA doesn’t offer a warranty as long as Sony, the product life has a short expectancy and if it breaks, the place of purchase may not cover it. Reasons like this are significant in terms of choosing a music system, because in the market its not amount of money that counts, but quality of the audio shelf system that means everything.
